We have all just spent another day shouting at each other. Kids don't want to play with anything. I can't seem to do anything that suits both of them. Weathers pants so cant go outside. Builders making mess in my living room. DH grumpy because starting night shift. DD 5 either suckng thumb, sulking, stropping or falling out with brother. DS 2 doesnt listen to anything i say just does as he wishes. Aaaaaaggggggggghhhhhhh! Please tell me its not just me who finds this hard.

"Library would be nice - if ds3 (3 yrs old) would sit down and read instead of doing an impression of road-runner."
My 3 ds's are like that especially the 2 year old although a one armed chimpanzee would be nearer the mark for him as he would be swinging from the lightin if unattended for more than 30 seconds.

When my two were tiny they really did need fresh air and exercise ... a bit like dogs really! At one point we absolutely had to be out of the house (whatever the weather) by 9.00 am, to ensure a happy day. Once they'd had their 30-45 min fix of fresh air and bouncing, they were fine to engage in whatever educational and stimulating activities I had planned for them at home, and we had happy days. But if we didn't go out, we all just went stir crazy and were ready to murder one another by 10.00 am

We just bit the bullet and got waterproofs, wellies, and umbrellas and got on with it.

Now they're 9 and 11, and sometimes we have to drag them out of bed/the house, but they still don't object to being out in the rain

Loriycs · 03/08/2008 17:24

Mines sons like that, he goes stir crazt and starts boucing off the furniture or drawing on his face, so its out in the garden whatever the weather to ' run it off' as you say like dogs!!! I dont think boys are meant to be indoor creatures anyway, against nature.

ilovecake · 03/08/2008 22:21

Tried positive thinking today and went much better. Made a cake involving DS - normally just do this with DD. Then set up Duplo then took picnic to different park and stayed out for a couple of hours. Just decided to not get so stressed about what i can't do and focus on what i can.

what do you mean 'already'?? its been going on FOREVER !

I have a feeling it's much easier when kids are school age. We arranged a day a week at the park where any parent could meet up by putting a note in all the kids trays at school. That gives the weeks a bit of structure.

Went to the pictures today and took my own pick and mix, so it cost £4.75 each and the price of bus fare.

We've got playdates arranged throughout the next couple of weeks. The library is free and there's a couple of museums and galleries to visit in town, which I'm eternally grateful for.

Next week we're going camping for 4 days, just me and the girl. I decided a tent would be a cheap way for us to go to the seaside together. It'll probably rain though, so I'll end up in musuems elsewhere. Like someone said above though, she's not made of sugar, so we'll wrap up warm and brazen it out if worst comes to worst!

I've also got trips to my mum's lined up (she lives 70 miles away so we only get to see her during school hols); parks to visit; a London Trip; a trip to friends in Leicester; playdates galore. It's time I'm short of rather than activities! Oh...and money isn't growing on trees either, so economising has to be part of the fun too.

It's harder when they're small, as I vaguely recall but dd is 7 now and it's a doddle. I love it. Sorry.

ilovecake · 04/08/2008 23:03

I can see that once they get older it does get easier. When I get to spend time with just DD who is 5 we have a lovely time because she is that bit more independent and sensible now. Not that i dont love time with DS who is 2 - but the combination is tough at times. Have certainly taken on board all your suggestions and focusing on fun rather than the mess and stress.
