To let my 5 year old climb on his play house in his pants, washing it with a baby wipe?

It's about 4.5 foot tall.

Ex P says it is dangerous and he will break his neck, and what's the point in him even coming to visit when he obviously gets no say?

I say I can't watch him 24/7 (exp maintains, for the record, that I can and should) and he will climb there the second my back is turned, and it's not up to ex p to challenge the rules in my house.

What do you say?

ds1 has been climbing on his playhouse roof for years (he's 9 now) hasn't fallen off yet.

flack · 30/07/2008 19:33

Washing the wendy house or the pants or his legs.. and anyway, what's that got to do with safety? Surely you're worried about him falling off & breaking neck??

Anyway, depends on child, imo. Most would be safe enough at that height at that age.

ThatBigGermanPrison · 30/07/2008 19:36

Well, his legs weren't mentioned in the op, and his pants would be 'washing them with a babywipe, so it's his playhouse he has to be washing with a babywipe

But I'm not concerned he will hurt himself.

ThatBigGermanPrison · 30/07/2008 22:59

My dd (also aged 5) is always climbing on top of her playhouse (and the fence/wall/posts etc) and i do shout her down because i'm frightened that she will hurt herself. It is around 6/7ft high though ...

Its hard to say whether or not YABU though without knowing your child.

frankiesbestfriend · 30/07/2008 23:06

YANBU

Sounds like good, healthy childish fun to me.

Can't bear hearing parents always telling their dcs to 'stop it' 'get down' or 'get off' every 2 minutes.

Mildly dangerous play like this is healthy imo, dd was a 'climber', and today she raced up the climbing wall at an event we visited. Made me proud, and glad I let her climb on trees and walls as a younger child.

nelliesmum · 30/07/2008 23:06

I'd like to add that it is fairly obvious why he IS an exp...he sounds charming!!!

Is playhouse on grass? If it is over a pit of snakes or maybe concrete could be issue, but honestly???

frankiesbestfriend · 30/07/2008 23:08

bluenosesaint, x posts, I do think 6 or 7 foot is more dangerous.

cheesesarnie · 30/07/2008 23:08

yanbu.i regulary sit on playhouse in pants cleaning it with baby wipes.nowt wrong with that

nelliesmum · 30/07/2008 23:10

Can you come and do mine?

cheesesarnie · 30/07/2008 23:12

no im wiping down the trees tomorrow.

ThatBigGermanPrison · 30/07/2008 23:13

He has pissed me off increasingly over the course of the evening, snapping snarling and lolling about my house while I try to get on. he can't cope with ds1 at the moment - honestly, I'm struggling with him myself, but I have roasted ds1 lately for the way he speaks to me - and it's just like exp speaks to people when he's pissed off.

Seriously considering lowering the level of contact, maybe to four times a week.

nelliesmum · 30/07/2008 23:16

Do you have to see so much of him, can't he just pick ds up at the door?

ThatBigGermanPrison · 30/07/2008 23:20

But that would involve taking them out, he doesn't do that. he doesn't take them to his place - there's nowhere for them to be, it's a cupboard in a shared flat that has no living room. The most he does without me forcing him is take them to the park once a week. He turns up every day though, and in itself it's good for the children/

frankiesbestfriend · 30/07/2008 23:30

If he wants to be in sole charge of your children he should take them out.
Could he go to a relative's house for dinner, like his mother's?

Is he stricter than you in other ways?
If it's this one thing it's not a huge issue, but if it is symptomatic of a bigger problem with differing parenting styles you probably should try to discuss it with him.

nelliesmum · 30/07/2008 23:31

Aagh, sounds like a nightmare...do you go out when he is there?

reallyfatcow · 31/07/2008 01:57

well our playhouse is on stilts and i can't stop youngest from tightrope walking around balcony nude, (despite many efforts to get her to put pants on lol).
as long as he's safe who realy cares??? are children not allowed to be children these days??? remember when you were young????

cheesesarnie · 31/07/2008 11:03

we had one of those on stilts-very high for tightrope walking!we chopped off legs a while ago so that it was safer for the 2 year old.
