to email Argos as ask why they are so overtly gender stereotyping?

Apparently they have "everything you need for your little princess" and "everything you need for your little monster". What I most want to know if why girls apparently need sets to make bath bombs, perfume and lip gloss and only boys should have access to telescopes, bug catchers and chemistry sets?!

StealthPolarBear · 27/07/2008 20:18

he points at it and shouts in a threatening manner DON'T YOU HURT MY MUMMY I'M WATCHING AND IF YOU DO I'LL ... oooh you're looking this way now, i have something i need to do in the other room...

upsydizzy · 31/07/2008 18:00

My niece is as much of a tomboy as you can get. Her christmas present lst year was a toy workbench. As oppossed to my nephew (not from the same side of the family) who has been begging his mum for a high school musical doll. It's just daft that everything has to be colour and gender coded these days.

PrimulaVeris · 31/07/2008 18:12

Ah yes, I have often bought things for Dd from Argos which have the sticker "Boy's Toys" on them. Makes me fume.

Eilatan · 01/08/2008 00:35

I have been alarmed at the slogans for little boys: 'little rebel', 'little monster', 'dude','here comes trouble', 'I recycle my tantrums' etc. compared with 'daddy's little princess' etc etc.. (and I swear there's twice as much girl clothing than boys) However, my 13 month old boy watches Top Gear and Wheeler Dealer etc. and the ONLY thing he's scared of is the hoover. In the GPs waiting room the other day he made a beeline for a red fire engine whereas the little girl there went for the toy washing mc...then she neatly tidied up all the toys bless her, then my little dude/ monster/ trouble untidied them for her...I felt felt for her but she might as well learn now what life's gonna be like....

Playingthe9monthwait · 01/08/2008 11:49

Good luck. The gender sterotyping is everywhere in the toy industry. Argos have whole departments called "boys toys" and "girls toys" with different buyers for each. I work in the industry and I am constantly amazed how stuck in the past the whole thing is! Oh and the descriptions int he catalogue have probably be written by the manufactures not Argos themselves, I wrote our pages in the catalogue

TheCrackFox · 01/08/2008 11:54

Even ELC is bad for it. My DH is a chef so my 2 boys love all the cooking and toy food stuff. What does ELC do? Yes, make all that stuff pink!! Why? Why? Why?

combustiblelemon · 01/08/2008 12:22

TheCrackFox, there is stuff like this around. They also do play kitchens that aren't all pink.
There are also wooden versions like this.

MamaGLovesMe · 01/08/2008 12:22

I'd object to the monster bit.

mamadiva · 01/08/2008 12:35

Well DP was fuming the other day because I said I was getting DS a little pram and a kitchen for his christmas! He's 2YO FFS he likes things like that at nursery! DP doesnt seem to realise that he pushes a pram and he does use the kitchen so since when was it a girls thing big twattin partner

andyrobo237 · 01/08/2008 12:54

I wont buy any top that has a slogan on it for that reasaon - my DS may be a monster / rebal. etc but I dont need to advertise it!

My DD is girly sometimes and other times a tomboy - so must have done somethingn right - DS palys with dolls and prams and kitchens but prefers my real hoover to a toy one - he copies me when I do cleaning!

Why oh why dont they do these play toys in neutral colours - green or red or yellow rather than pink and blue - my DS plays with a teaset which is not pink but he would still play with it if it was - we are not living in the dark ages!

ImnotOK · 01/08/2008 12:58

My DD is a tomboy she has all the dr who stuff (which is labelled under boys toys )

For xmas she wants a pirate outfit and a pirate ship.

My other dd on the other hand loves disney princess and can often be found wandering round in a cinderella dress singing off tune whilst been chased by my other dd in a cyberman mask lol.

chelsygirl · 01/08/2008 13:08

its the horrible slogans on t-shirts for boys I hate, who'd buy them?

laweaselmys · 01/08/2008 16:27

I want to know why there are four pages of high school musical crap in the argos catalogue. I suppose it's red and not pink but it's still all hideous and disturbing.

notcitrus · 01/08/2008 17:29

Good luck! I swear the stereotyping is 10x worse than it was when I grew up - which is odd given we have actually moved quite a way towards equality in everything else.

Back when I was at primary school boys had to drink their milk outside in all weathers, girls inside, trousers forbidden for girls, and girls weren't allowed to enter the football area.

Now at least that will have all changed - even if the girls have to wear pink trousers and trainers to play the football...
