to think that people who beep at learner drivers are blardy rude

ok ok I know we are a complete pain in the bum, but Im only had my 2nd lesson today and imo Im doing well, I was a wee bit slow turning in to park which was between 2 other parked cars, and inconsiderate driver started beeping. I had indicated, its not like I was doing anything dangerous.

Everyone who is a driver had to be a sometime, all drivers have been there and its not like beeping is going to make me go any faster, infact it had the opposite effect of making me lose my concentration.

I did have people walk stupidly slow across a road when I was having my lesson the other day.

Luckily for them I know how to slow down LOL.

Backgammon · 27/07/2008 12:58

I got this a few times when I was learning, generally for not going fast enough. I just used to think "what exactly are you trying to tell me with your beeping? That I can't drive? I think I know that already".

Knob-ends the lot of them, plus beeping just to indicate frustration rather than as a warning is in breech of the highway code so they set a really bad example to learner drivers anyway.

LazyLinePainterJane · 27/07/2008 13:01

I got stuck behind a scared learner the other day and it was great! She took about 5 minutes to turn into a side road when the road was clear and I loved every minute as there was a nobboid van driver behind me who had been on my arse all the way up the road. When I got behind the learner doing 5 miles an hour I cheered as I knew it would piss him off!

onepieceoflollipop · 27/07/2008 13:04

LLPJ that would amuse me as well. Anything to (safely) wind up some twit like that.

blueshoes · 27/07/2008 13:10

giraffe, I do think your instructor's deep end approach is irresponsible.

I know what I was like the first few lessons. As a much seasoned driver myself now, there is no way I would want to be on a busy road at that level of (non) skill and judgment, unless there was an easy way the instructor could take over the controls, which he/she cannot beyond pulling the handbrake.

It is rude to beep at learners, whatever their level of skill. What particularly irks me is when drivers beep at learner drivers on test (in the country I took my test, there was a sign to say 'on test'). Now THAT is mean.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 27/07/2008 13:16

Beeping learners v. bad form. It's best to keep a good distance anyway, in case their clutch control is still crap and they roll back on you!

And always go slower when beeped, it's very satisfying (especially where I live as it's too narrow and twisty to overtake without killing yourself on an oncoming tractor).

stella, you must be quite spatially gifted then. Were you learning to drive a manual car?

Agree the accelerator is easy and so is the brake. But it was all about the clutch the first few lessons. Plus learning the dimensions of the car re: the side of the pavement and road markings, knowing what you are seeing when you look in the rear mirror, side mirrors ...

It only took a few lessons in a big empty carpark, where I also did figure of eights to judge how a car turns when I move the steering wheel. Then it was ALL on the road driving.

BouncingTurtle · 27/07/2008 13:57

Giraffes - I think you must have my old driving instructor - he took me out on to the Sheffield Parkway (50mph dual carriageway) on my 2nd lesson! I was not happy...

giraffescantdancethetango · 27/07/2008 14:42

agree its the clutch - i didnt even KNOW the clutch basically did it all lol, i thought it was the accelerator that was the one that made it go, i thought the clutch was just what you pressed while you changed gear.

althought his approach terrified me and i can see flaws in it, then i have to saw its made me have to learn. if i get a bit freaked out he wont let me have a freak out about it, hes just like right come on now were going this way.

Once I was stuck at some lights for ages behind a learner who kept stalling. The lights must have changed three times before the car moved off. Tried to stay cool and not get annoyed and certainly didn't beep. anyway, when we moved off I passed the car in the other lane, looked and it turned out to be my dear 17 year old cousin in the driving seat! Bless, has made me be a bit more patient with learners now.

How on earth do people find these threads in the first place?

mummabubs · 18/02/2017 17:47

I live in a residential area where they decided to build a test centre 2 roads away... so I get a LOT of learner interaction!

I passed my test 10 years ago, so not an eternity but not too fresh either! I won't lie, sometimes it is really frustrating when during rush hour and I'm trying to commute out of the city to work that there's an abundance of learners who are clearly not confident enough yet to do the 30mph speed limit or to handle roundabouts... however I never feel cross with the learner. To me it's the responsibility of the instructor to know how confident their pupils are and to use common sense to adapt the route/ time and only tackle busier roads at busy times as their confidence and ability grows. This is the approach my instructor took with me and it really helped as I didn't experience much of the road rage! That's why I don't get it when people beep at the learner, it's not their fault!

mummabubs · 18/02/2017 17:48

Lol and only just seen how old the post is... man I got sucked in there eh! 😂

Old thread but it's still the same situation out there.

I once pissed off a LOT of cars when going past a horse once during a lesson. Lots of aggressive overtaking afterwards. I didn't care, it was a fucking horse no need to go fast past it!

9950angela why have you only posted twice in 2 years - both times to bump very old threads?
