To hate weatherpeople saying "Spits And Spots" of rain??

I hate it so much that I've almost written to the bbc about it. Honestly, it is irrational but it sounds so irritating. It's like when people put on baby voices and say things like 'ickle wickle'

Does anyone else HATE this too? Am I alone?

ME TOO!!! Together with "mist and murk", grrrrrrr

wigparty · 24/07/2008 10:37

Is it local weather? Is she a young girl who sounds constantly drunk?

branflake81 · 24/07/2008 10:42

I have to turn the volumne down when I watch the weather because they drag it out so badly and blather on so much I can't stand it. I just watch the picture.

ipanemagirl · 24/07/2008 10:43

Wigparty, I have heard this from the full RANGE of weatherpersons, male female, young and old but particularly guilty are the Scots. It actually sounds like it may be a proper expression somewhere but it makes me want to self-immolate in protest! It makes me think of Balamory which i can't see without emotional pain.....!

You are right to do that Branflake. I usually hear it on the radio which is why it's hard to escape.

The other awful thing about weatherpeople is their generic warmth/good humour/note of an underlying giggle/tone of a friendly aunt or uncle/lame jokes.......

Just read it and **off you weathergimp! I'm NOT interested in how funny it all is to YOU!!!!!!

[apology emoticon, I'm 32 weeks pg and overhot]

I wish I didn't even KNOW about 'Mist and Murk' I feel even worse now!

OP posts:
wigparty · 24/07/2008 11:14

He he, now you know it's out there it will crop up all over the place mist and murk mist and murk mist and murk

My other pet hate is when weather people try and tie the start of the weather into what the newsreader last said, resulting in a totaly contrived piece of rubbish!

ipanemagirl · 24/07/2008 11:36

And the FAUX good humour of it, the just perceptible giggly tone!

The horror of it! The falseness! the mateyness! aRGHHHH

OP posts:
Seeline · 24/07/2008 12:01

I hate 'bits of weather' - what's that all about? Bring back the proper weather charts with isobars and weather fronts and we won't need the weather person at all!

ipanemagirl · 24/07/2008 12:03

'bits of weather' we're all going to hell in a handcart.

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 24/07/2008 12:04

hear hear Seeline !

wigparty · 24/07/2008 12:06

I want those big fat suns and clouds back that were stuck on with velcro, those were the days

Katisha · 24/07/2008 12:11

YANBU it is awful. As is cloud bubbling up.

There was a funny exchange on R4 when someone queried the use of the phrase "later there will be more organised rain" in a forecast.

Someone emailed to say maybe the opposite to "organised rain" was an Absolute Shower.

wigparty · 24/07/2008 12:14

ipanemagirl, you must be dangerously close to the edge by now Breathe and relax

Aniyan · 24/07/2008 12:15

I read the title to this thread and thought to myself 'I'm going to mention how much I HATE it when they talk about 'cloud bubbling up'' - but I see I've been beaten to it - glad to know I'm not alone

I find it almost impossible to listen to/watch a weather forecast without realising at the end that I tuned out at some point and have missed most of what they said - not altogether a bad thing, really.

ipanemagirl · 24/07/2008 12:41

aniyan I know exactly what you mean, you zone out and miss the critical bit because you've been hypnotised into a coma by the false good cheer and the warm and friendly voice!

Yes wigparty I must get into the Lotus and chant to myself
"I must resist self-immolation, I must resist self-immolation"

SoupDragon · 24/07/2008 12:42

I think the fact that you almost wrote to the BBC shows how unreasonable you're being

PinkPussyCat · 24/07/2008 12:46

Or when there's "Plenty of weather around!"

WTF?

(Aside - That Rob McElwee always comes across a bit bonkers - or is it just me?)

ipanemagirl · 24/07/2008 12:46

I think I am being unreasonable but I still wish that people responsible could be tranported to a rock in the middle of the ocean and left there for not having my fine instincts on what is and what is not a repulsive turn of phrase.....

OP posts:
ipanemagirl · 24/07/2008 12:48

Plus they are all a bit scary, maybe they are cult

members...
