to NOT be arsed that dd2 was jumping in puddles and was drenched. Apparently "she will catch her death"

do we live in the Arctic and I have missed a meeting?

took girls to park at weekend, our 'summer' outfits included wellies and macs

dd1 and dd2 found big muddy puddle and attacked it. Both drenched, dd2 wet up to her arse, wellies had to be removed and water poured out

they loved it

I was informed at the cafe that "oooh she will catch her death"

so AIBU for letting them jump in a puddle or is this now frowned on as well?

Dp took our two to the park yesterday. Wellies and raincoats. They were apparently having a fab time getting wet and muddy. Jumping with both feet into deep puddles. Dp saw another boy on the slide being told by his dad to be careful on the wooden steps up, not to scuff his shoes. THen when he came down the dad was all upset that the back of the boys trousers was a bit damp and said 'we'll have to go home now you are all dirty'

I look on it as dirty = happy.

I am trying my hardest not to be the way my parents are/were with me - succeeding so far. But when we visit them the stress does rub off a bit I agree!

Oliveoil · 21/07/2008 12:00

my only regret was not taking extra clothes

next time I will

what makes me laugh is "oh don't go on the slide/swing/anything, it is wet"

WELL DON'T FRIGGING COME TO THE PARK WHEN IT IS RAINING THEN YOU NOBBOID

honestly

The only problem I see with 'puddle jumping' is the other children who come along and want to join in the fun. They are inevitably wearing white sandles. That's when I get the evil eye from other parents

Flibbertyjibbet · 21/07/2008 12:03

Malorytowers - that sounds like a friend of mine. But she has identical twins and was obsessed with them matching. So all the circumstances you list above would have been a change of clothes for BOTH children, otherwise they would not have been matching.

!!

Slight thread-hijack, but when I was a kid we travelled in the car with four of us in the front, no seat belts etc, and my parents were fine with this. However, my parents said us kids were not allowed to open a bottle of lemonade ("it'll take your eye out") or go near a swan ("it'll break your arm") !!

Weird what some people get upset about !!

Gobbledigook · 21/07/2008 12:09

I let mine jump in them. There's always a puddle at nursery and while everyone is else is dragging their kids away from it I just shrug and let mine get on with it. If you can't splash in puddles at 3 years old, when can you? It's NOT going to kill them!

Gobbledigook · 21/07/2008 12:12

'However, my parents said us kids were not allowed to open a bottle of lemonade ("it'll take your eye out") or go near a swan ("it'll break your arm") !!'

OMG, I am HOWLING!

misdee · 21/07/2008 12:18

my phrase is ;kids and clothes are both washable'

last winter a torrential downpour started just as we left school to head home. the usual 10min walki took 20mins, as dd's spalshed in every puddle. i texted ahead and asked dh to start running a bath, as i knew they would be cold by the time we go in, by the time we walked through the door every inch of them was soaking, they had great fun and loved the warm bath afterwards.

i muchprefer summer rain. mine often are in the garden in their undies in the rain.

I was terrified of ice-skating because my mother convinced me that there was no way on earth I would leave the ice-rink with all my fingers

this is the woman who left a bottle of turpentine without the safety catch engaged on the floor for my dd1 to crawl towards

wooga · 21/07/2008 12:29

Can't beat a bit of puddle jumping!

My dd was splashing around outside the supermarket, beaming away and shreaking with delight, several people commented on how nice it was to see a little one enjoying herself so much!

AnAngelWithin · 21/07/2008 12:33

puddle jumpings ace! great fun for everyone! we love it in this house!! even me and dh do it!!

LittleMyDancingForJoy · 21/07/2008 12:38

Our local park has a fab huge sandpit with a climbing frame in it. Last time we were there, on a warm sunny day, so all the sand was dry, there was a mum imploring her child in tones of horror:

'Oooooo, , you're going to get all sandy!'

Er, yes, it's a sandpit.....

Cappucino I was NEVER allowed to go ice skating for that very reason lol. I would love to try it now simply to see their faces... I'm 32 but I bet they'd still say it!

juneybean · 21/07/2008 14:25

Today seems quite warm in comparison to some we've had recently.

I had some complete stranger tell me my charge "must be freezing" when 2 year old charge refused to put coat on.

I ain't going to hang around and argue with a 2 year old to put her coat on!

2Eliza2 · 21/07/2008 14:34

You sound like a good, fun, mother, Oliveoil! I bet you all had a ball.

My children have frequently been cold and wet. They seldom have time off school with bugs. Toughens them up (in the nicest sense) to do these things, I think.

Oliveoil · 21/07/2008 15:01

they had a ball, I was secretly thinking "oh ffs, more washing"

lol at ice rinks, I used to fall over and screw my hands into fists to 'protect' my fingers
