To want to get a job as a cleaner, despite being shite at cleaning my own house and being overqualified.

What do people generally expect their cleaners to do and would it be reasonable to expect to do it in 2hrs a day? DD is starting playschool in october and what will i do apart from waste the morning because that is not enough time to get a "proper" job. I am going to return to full time work when DD starts school, possibly teaching but we need some money and i fancy it, i'm not sure why. lol - my mum was a cleaner, perhaps its in my blood.

So, 2 hours a day?? And how much should i charge, i am in Kent. My cousins wife does it for £5.50 an hour and im not prepared to work for that. I was thinking along the lines of £7-8 is that reasonable?

My friend cleans & charges £12 per hour. She is in Leicestershire.I'm surprised that it is more expensive here than London.

Friend is VERY good & has a continual waiting list.

I would say [preen] that I am very good at cleaning, and although it's not genetics, having a mother who is a good cleaner does help. I've run a cleaning business before, so worked with my mum on this, and have got lots of tips from her about cleaning that really make a difference in the effort required and result achieved.

I am also crap at cleaning my own house (MN, small children, anything else I could do except clean....), but think I'd be a great cleaner. May well do this when DS2 gets free pre-school time. Whilst I'm paying for him to go, I'm going to use the time to relax. Illogical I know, but...

£12 an hour for cleaning!!!!

Blimey

bunchoflowers · 18/07/2008 00:09

I think it's a great idea - no stress, immediate job satisfaction, you can put the radio on and get a reasonable workout at the same time. Cleaning is great therapy too. I think I've just convinced myself that being a cleaner is probably one of the best jobs around!

I sometimes think the professional, so-called 'intellectually challenging' jobs are a pain in the ass and just create unwanted stress.

lucyellensmum · 18/07/2008 08:20

i tend to agree bunch of flowers, i've had stressful jobs and its pants. I'm quite excited about it - very weird. I think it is because i am sort of going to be my own boss.

Oh one thing Lem, don't ever announce to the people you are working for that you hate cleaning and your own house is a tip ( although I'm sure its not). This is the first thing that my first ever cleaner said to me, and do you know what she was right, she sure did hate cleaning

It sounds like a really positive step for you, I hope it works out well.

lucyellensmum · 19/07/2008 10:08

rookie, i don't hate cleaning, but i do hate cleaning my own house. I know how that looks . In fact i quite like CLEANING, its the deciding what to do with the mountains of tatt and work shite that accumulates in my house that i hate.

You are right, it IS a positive step - i will have 2.5 hours which i could spend, at home, i wonder what i will be doing, or sitting in a cafe SPENDING money. So i thought, why not have a go.
