We are going through our DVD so that we can take some to blockbuster to trade in. Well I turfed a few out that I was willing to part with and he comes in with a handful of my Favourite movies saying he wants to trade them in. he says we havent watched them so should trade them in.. I say what If I want to watch it again have I got to buy a new DVD.. he says it would be cheaper than the space of keeping it..

I have had a huff and told him he can't get rid of Blade III (teensy crush on Ryan Reynolds)

then he grumbles at me putting North By North West on the pile.. classic I know but not my fav hitchcock by any stretch..

and i'm grumpy that he is trading in the musical buffy episode that I got him for his birthday a few years ago...

There are box sets you do HAVE to have, and i'm really enjoying introducing the children to older films. ET was a recent hit, just about to show all of the Indiana Jones's. Star Wars has been shown a few times. I've got the Kubrick one for me but that's not exactly child friendly. Don't tend to get TV box sets because the shows are always on, but have a weakness for Everybody Loves Raymond

Went to the Bates Motel set at Universal a couple of years back which really freaked me out.

The Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland, where you get chased by the giant ball, is one of my favourite of all time!

We were left a little money a couple of years back so bought a good surround sound system (Pioneer) and it is THX certified. So whenever you play any of the Lucasfilm DVDs, they are all THX mastered so the sound is as perfect as is possible. Apparently. Have to say it's the loudest thing I've ever heard, but it feels amazing. If you love films, then the sound is as important as the image. Mind you, the 5 minute set up took us 3 days! Horror films are so frightening that I haven't watched one all the way through yet

Mag7- if I may call you that? I plan to get Indy box set for DS for x-mas... and we may get a new tv as the house present this year instead of presents for each other...

quite amused earlier by that fact DH said he wouldn't mind watching From Dusk Till Dawn sometime.. then remebered we only had it on tape and got rid of that years ago when the vcr bust and decided no more videos.

never really done the universal/disney world thing... I'm American but we were quite poor at times while I was growing up so never went on vacation/holiday anywhere... and never went on any of the school trips to disneyland either..and all the rich kids whent there on the school trip every year.

have a weakness for Raymond too.. its funny becuse thats about the only decent show on at my parents house.. they have like 2 local channels, and wont fork out for satalite and there is no cable in rural Idaho... Raymond is on ever weeknight 6-7 and we watch it almost every night...

'Serenity was one of the most painfully bad films of all time' - oi, I take that very personally

'serenity is awesome' - yes, yes I am it is

scottishmum007 · 16/07/2008 19:27

I forced DH to watch Love Story. He would love to trade that into Blockbusters!

It's going to be tough coming to agreements then for you trading DVDs, we all like differnt stuff.

Meridien, Mag7 suits just fine. I visit the US relatively often, but prefer some of the more local rather than touristy places. Just have a Disney/Vegas thing. Was in St Louis for a while last year and have to say it was one of the best breaks ever. Spent a lot of time hunting out books, a stupid amount of time up in the arch even though I'm terrified of stairs, and a lot of time with a very kind and time-generous American family hanging out. I have a terrible confession too. It was three days before I worked out that I'd gotten confused about Lewis and Clark, and they weren't Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis...

Serenity. I wish I could even think about giving it a second chance but it was...well, poor. You can name change on here apparently though

Cyteen - Is that after the CJ Cherrye book ?

And just found a box of DVDs in the garage that I inherited from my Mum. Von Ryans Express, Lawrence of Arabia, and a remastered Dr Zhivago which I've never watched. Heaven

M7, you will enjoy Dr Zhivago, it's a brilliant film.

madamez · 17/07/2008 15:20

Oh, sure, introduce them to feckin Star Wars. Nothing like teaching kids sexism and white supremacy at a really early age....

meridian · 17/07/2008 15:38

mag7- where my parents are in Idaho is part of the Lewis and Clark trail, lots of little plaques everywhere about logging and lewis and clark etc... which reminds me on the interstate that goes down south quite a ways there is a Lewiston named after the aforemention Lewis, we were driving down through Idaho then into Nevada to get back to california and we happend to stop at dusk too look over industrial Lewston... in the growing darkness DH got out of the car to breathe in the stench of indutry and a dark shape lumbered away from him. DH swears blind it was a rino, but I'm pretty sure it was just a poor cow scared witless.

perhaps you had to be there.. I've only been to St Louis once when I was 5 and we were moving from New York to California.. my parents, me, 3 dogs, 3 cats, and a big jade plant (that fell on me) in a little campervan that broke down 5 times... those were the days...

as for the film Serenity.. you need to watch Firefly first... and like Buffy at least to get Joss Whedon's sense of humor and writing... it makes alot more sense havign watchd Firefly... shame it got canceled.. but thats FOX for you..

mademez- lol... all DS sees is spaceships, droids, and lightsabers... nothing else matters..

Meridian, I loved St Louis, and seem to have a fondness for the West. I went to a wedding in Arizona a couple of years back, and spent some time in Scottsdale. Couldn't begin to tell you how interesting but alien it was. I bought some magnificent books on the Lewis and Clark story, and spent more time in the museum bookshop than in the arch.

I was talking to a radio bloke the other day, and hit upon an idea that I'm convinced would make a great documentary about Americna musical history, and it's influence now...that also involved me getting lots of cool cars and doing Route 66 etc. "I rode down to St Louis..." indeed.

OK, i'll leave Serenity, I thought it was a one off. It looked like a TV show, so now I know I'm a little less aghast.

MadameZ, I was going to teach sexism and white supremacy later, but felt like there was no time like the present. No point in holding back in today's society. You should watch it yourself one day. A six part tragedy over the influences of good and evil in a society so multi cultural that nobody but the smallest part of the cast is black or white. All of the black actors in the film being heroes, all of the females playing fantastically brave and successful characters, and even the notion that to have full sentience makes you part of the society you are in thus making the droids sensitive to each other and capable of love and hate. Particularly the 'white supremacy' label is of interest, given the main character, Darth Vader, is jewish (please read the hebrew on his chest plate), and also severley disabled. As for it being 'fecking Star Wars' perhaps you and I watched different versions. Eh chu ta solo, as a good friend of mine once said. Probably.

Is there a better age to teach them ? Or does ignorant bigotry from misinformed twats start in reception everywhere these days.

Anyway, looking forward to Dr Zhivago
