To think a parent/assistant should not comment on my child's SATS resuts?

She has been helping with reading in Yr 2.
These were DS's results:
Speaking and Listening - 3
Writing - 2A
Reading - 3
Maths - 2A
Science - 3.

I thought this was OK.

She was chatting on the way home from school and she was talking about how much she had enjoyed helping them in class, and she said 'XXX is an example - he did well because he has had so much support from me. It's a shame he is lagging behind on the subjects that really count at this age like writing and maths'. I said 'I don't think he's lagging behind' and she said 'but he didn't do so well in the tests which are done under exam conditions - any teacher can have an opinion on those other subjects'.

Do parent assistants usually have access to SATS results?
Is what she says true
Is DS 'lagging behind? I thought 2A meant 'highish average'?

I feel with her, but worried in case DS is ok in the 'soft options' - oh and in reading due to her magical influence, of course!

Was she being helpful or a strring up-herself bitch?

And do they take into account the age of the child? I said 'XX has plenty of time to improve his writing' (DS won't be 7 until August) and she said 'oh, that's all worked out as part of the results'.

You need to speak to the school. Parent helpers should not be discussing anything like that. Our Head would come down on her like a ton of bricks.

The results are very good BTW, and she is talking out of her arse.

cocolepew · 11/07/2008 17:47

She's breaching confidentiality policies by talking like this.

waffletrees · 11/07/2008 17:48

TBH she shouldn't be "helping" out if she can't keep her trap shut.

I help out at my DS1 school but I asked to help classes he wasn't in. I never gossip about children because it is not fair on them or their parents.

OneTrickMummy · 11/07/2008 17:50

Thank you - I will mention it to the Head. I feel way of telling tales on her but I could tell him that I a concerned because YY commented on my DCs SATS and made me worried about his results.
I didn't think it seemed very ethical. The school should make the role of volunteer assistants clear.

cocolepew · 11/07/2008 17:51

Is she a C.A employed by the school or a parent volunteer?

cocolepew · 11/07/2008 17:51

X-post

Mercy · 11/07/2008 17:51

She has no idea what she is talking about.

Your ds' achievements (which are excellent) are not because he had so much support from her.

I'd speak to the class teacher tbh

cocolepew · 11/07/2008 17:54

I agree with Mercy I would speak to the teacher or Head. I work as a C.A in a SN school. We would be severly disciplined for this.

OneTrickMummy · 11/07/2008 17:55

She is a volunteer.

Do they make allowances for age?

OP posts:
TheFallenMadonna · 11/07/2008 17:56

No, I don't think so.

It doesn't matter if she's a volunteer. She shouldn't be talking about what goes on in the classroom, and she certainly shouldn't be doing it from what is clearly a position of ignorance.

welshdeb · 11/07/2008 17:56

Is she a volunteer or doing her teaching asst training?
If she is a volunteer maybe she should be allowed a little leeway but no way if she is training.

You should speak to the head. Its definately not her place to discuss these results with you.

Second these results are very good. Average yr2 sats are 2b so any 3s are excellent and 2as are very good so she is talking out of her bottom.

Also (particular bug bear of mine having a ds who is born in august) there is no allowance at all made for the birthdate age of the child. So if your child has got these results and has a late birthdate even better.

Again this shows how little she knows and how unprofessional she is.

combustiblelemon · 11/07/2008 17:58

Ah. Now I remember why I like private schools!

janeite · 11/07/2008 18:01

The expected Level in Yr 2 is L2 for everything; so your son is doing very well indeed.

A) she shouldn't be talking about it
B) she doesn't even know what she's talking about

She needs a talking to I think before she worries anybody else.

juneybean · 11/07/2008 18:02

She should definately not be talking about them to you or anyone else outside of the classroom.

2s and 3s are very good for KS1 SATs

Blu · 11/07/2008 18:04

LOL - d you not get competitive bitchy mummies in private schools, combustiblelemon?

OneTrick - YOU have a bright little boy, SHE has problems!

cocolepew · 11/07/2008 18:04

ASs a volunteer she still should be aware of the importance of keeping her mouth shut and her (wrong) opinions to herself. She seems a bit full of herself, TBH.

nkf · 11/07/2008 18:04

She's out of order. Totally. You should tell the head who should deal with her. Not on at all. She shouldn't have access to those reports in my opinion.

cocolepew · 11/07/2008 18:05

Ha! Not ASS but as

cocolepew · 11/07/2008 18:05

Ha! Not ASS but as

cocolepew · 11/07/2008 18:05

nfk is right, she shouldn't even have seen the report.

combustiblelemon · 11/07/2008 18:09

You do Blu, but they don't let them come into the classroom and play at being teachers!

MABS · 11/07/2008 18:18

and my children's private schools don't do sats thank god.

mazzystar · 11/07/2008 18:19

she was probably trying to be helpful
BUT
massively innappropriate imo
