to have lost my temper over the dog?

I just walked into town with the girls (3 nd 2) and my dog, i nipped into somerfield for all of five mins and oats the drama dog howled like someone was cutting her open. Everyone could hear her and were all, aah the poor dog, left all alone... blah blah.

I grit my teeth, and came out and got her then walked to the chairty shop and tied her up again. The shop was FULL of americans as one of the cruise liners had docked. Once again oats howled like a banshee and this american woman stood in front of me at the till started going on about how terrible it was that that 'poor' dog was beng left to howl by its cruel owner and some people dont deserve to have dogs...well if i did, i just lost it, call it pregnancy hormones, or whatever...

I tapped her on the shoulder, said, i would be that cruel owner you are talking about, i have been in here FIVE minutes, shes a bloody puppy what do you expect her to do, talk? dogs howl, thats how they communicate...now why dont you go get back on that ship in the dock and go back to america where arrogant thick people belong?

now i know that was wrong (the american part though i dont think i was wrong to have a go at her frankly!), and would actually go back and apologise for the american part of it, if i could, glad my girls werent near by enough to hear me as thats not setting a very good parenting example, but honestly it really really really annoys me that everyone seems to have an opinion on my dog and how cruel i am because it howls when left alone for ANY time at all?!

I am not a dog owner so have no clue about dog behaviour but I'm not surprised people comment on a dog left outside to howl, tbh.

HuwEdwards · 09/07/2008 11:46

omg, I think you went a bit OTT mental to be honest

She most certainly wasn't deserving of that vitriol.

ScottishMummy · 09/07/2008 11:46

you should see how they scowl when my wee one Howls.LOL did you give 'em dogs abuse

justageek · 09/07/2008 11:46

it was for five minutes, not hours! she is a puppy, what do you suggest i do, leave her at home so she howls the house down for much longer than five mins? or perhaps beat her to stop her?

edam · 09/07/2008 11:47

(Although I do like your reply!)

HuwEdwards · 09/07/2008 11:47

I haven't commented on you leaving the dog - I have one myself, just your verbal abuse, which I think was out of order (and you did ask).

pigleto · 09/07/2008 11:47

I think you were probably pissed off with your noisy and irritating hound. Shame that you took it out on some poor compassionate animal lover.

Goober · 09/07/2008 11:47

Hilarious!
I wish I'd been there.

justageek · 09/07/2008 11:47

yes i know, it was over the top i do feel bad now though i still would have said something but it wasnt very mature of me.

their fond memories of scotland will be of you having a berky about the dog

edam · 09/07/2008 11:48

I have no idea, don't have dogs, but you are unreasonable if you think people who hear your dog howling aren't entitled to react.

WorzselMummage · 09/07/2008 11:49

You need to start telling your dog to shut up if it's annoying people.

Dogs who learn its ok to howl or bark while tied up or left at home will do it forever, it needs to be nipped in the bud cos noisy dogs are bloody annoying.

justageek · 09/07/2008 11:49

no she is a puppy, i most certainly would not be pissed of with her. She had a horrendous start in life and cant be blamed for not liking being left alone. I am annoyed though that people presume you must be a horrible cruel owner to leave the poor little doggie woggie by itself for 5 mins whilst you pick up some nappies from somerfield then go and get a book from a charity shop!

Ah, it's yer hormones.

justageek · 09/07/2008 11:50

worzel, i am actually just about to go on a dog forum i use to ask advice on it, because i think it stems from the fact that she was locked in a dining room by her ex owners for months on end (she was a rescue dog) and i wasnt told this was a 'trait' of hers, however i dont blame her and dont want to give up on her, just tired of being labelled horrific by people whom knwo bugger all about me or my dog.

The American wasn't necessarily an animal lover, probably just an 'American' as they like to sound-off.
Before I'm attacked for saying that, my brother has lived in USA for 15 years, his wife is an american. I love her and all her family and I have frequently told her that she is a gobshite. She agrees!

TheRealPhartiphukborlz · 09/07/2008 11:51

be nice to the next american tourist you see
make you feel better. unless of course "word is out" about the pregnant woman with dog abusing american tourists

justageek · 09/07/2008 11:51

i do feel guilty though so thought i would post here for a mumsnet whip lashing, to make me feel better for being mean, i am normally nice, except in the mornings.

justageek · 09/07/2008 11:55

oh and edam of course they are allowed to react, its the way they react that annoys me, automatically jumping to the conclusion that the poor dog has a horrible owner blah blah. One lovely bloke heard her howling last week whilst i was in the post office and went and stroked her till i came out, then said, ahh she is lovely, you can see she loves her owner!

now why cant they all be like that, instead of all grrrrrrr!

OP posts:
ScottishMummy · 09/07/2008 11:55

oh flippin flipper 2 posts - Doh bloody PC

edam · 09/07/2008 11:56

Oh, poor thing, not surprised she howls! You do need to get some advice on how to make her feel less distraught when she's left.

justageek · 09/07/2008 11:57

and I AM a compassionate animal owner, doesnt mean i walk about thinking all animals that make a noise are being neglected etc etc. farking ridiculous if you ask me!

(mind you after the way i reacted she probably went away thinking, urgh DEFINATELY a horrible dog owner, so pretty much shot my own foot there)
