There were bishops weeping and praying and saying they were forced into a corner because women are being allowed to be bishops.
Sorry that's really badly phrased. dh is stirring things up in the background.
I find it sickening actually. Discrimination at it's worst... they'll all go and join the catholics now.
Retrogressive.....

I do agree with your thread title

shocking

BoysAreLikeDogs · 08/07/2008 18:29

I try really hard to ignore religion in it's many forms, but honestly. They want to have a good hard look at themselves. Not very appealing at all.

colditz · 08/07/2008 18:29

I think it shows organised religion at it's very very worst - not set up for 50% of the world's population. Fine if you have a penis - if you don't, you may as well cut your tongue out because nobody is listening.

jette · 08/07/2008 18:34

You are definitely not being unreasonable.

TeacherSaysSo · 08/07/2008 18:44

YANBu can't these religious people see themselves for what they are. Christianity was written for hetero men by hetero men and that this blatent sexism exists is a massive elephant in the room!!

andiem · 08/07/2008 18:47

I agree there was a bishop on the news saying that newly ordained male priests will be wondering what their future in the church is now well it's called equal opportunities guys you go up against a female priest to be bish and the best person gets the job
the whole thing is so jobs for the boys it makes me want to boak

SheikYerbouti · 08/07/2008 18:47

This is pone of the many reasons why I don;t hold with religion.

Misogynistic bolleaux

madamez · 08/07/2008 18:47

What a bunch of DICKS.
Mind you, I wouldn't mind them keeping their inadequate boys clubs so much if they didn't get a disproportionate amount of power over other people's lives....

TeacherSaysSo · 08/07/2008 18:48

they're obviously worried that women's natural empathy and willingness to listen will drive them out! ha!

andiem · 08/07/2008 18:49

exactly madamez they should ban them from the house of lords for a start

morningpaper · 08/07/2008 18:54

well yes of course it is a bunch of dicks, that is the whole point of the bishop debate

The chap who was crying is IN FAVOUR of women bishops. He felt that the debate (about 10 hours of it) was not being as generous as he felt it should be.

PeachyBAHonsBirthdayGirl · 08/07/2008 18:56

erm.

this doesn't say anything about the Church- the church has made a good call- it says a lot about the backwards facing old farts who can't keep a grip on fundamental things like equality and the fact that 1600 is a loooong time ago

OP: yanbu. at all.

sitdownpleasegeorge · 08/07/2008 19:02

I'm curious......

Do the clergy who don't agree with women being bishops also think that no woman should be appointed a "manager" of any sort in non-religious organisations too ?

Can they not see that the world has moved on in an intelligent and educated fashion in respect of treating women as equals ?

They are doing so much harm to the image of organised religion it beggars belief.

plumandolive · 08/07/2008 19:10

I think the phrase that got me most was the one that they don't think women should have authoriy over men ina religious setting...

It's because of a piece n the Bible that said a woman should not teach a man, or something along those lines.

And, if you are sticking STRICTLY to scripture, actually, they are right.

BUT

If they, as priests, wish to be paid, they have to admit that they are offering employment and that we live in a country that does not permit sex discrimination in employment without very good reason.

smallcat commonsemse says that some women must have heard Jesus and supported him, and in effect were his disciples, but as you say, in those days it was not recognised. Its a bit like the medical proffession saying women can't be doctors because in the time of Hippocrates (the oath!) there were no women doctors!

colditz · 08/07/2008 19:19

here

Timothy

TeacherSaysSo · 08/07/2008 19:21

colditz but doesn't that mean we can't have females in any decent position of seniority? that's scary.

Mimsy2000 · 08/07/2008 19:23

find it totally ridiculous in this day and age. aren't they actually supposed to be concerned with things like poverty, justice and the well being of humanity and such!? golly they look bloody stupid if you ask me.

mind you i think that bishop in york is brilliant - but don't think he has any qualms about women. was the only one i saw speak out against mugabe, stood up for young kids getting a bad rap, etc, etc.....

[errr...feel the need to say i'm not religious, btw]
