DS(5) was given a sponge-bob duvet cover (with massive ?REDUCED TO CLEAR" label still attached) for his birthday by a friend from nursery.

Ok first of all, sponge-bob gives me the creeps. He's a sponge. Why does he need to wear pants? What exactly is he hiding?

Second of all, just spent a lot of money totally redecorating DS's room so no way am I then going to use some bizarre looking duvet that doesn't match.

Third of all, isn't a duvet a pretty weird gift anyway, regardless of what's on it unless you know the person's taste or at least have the slightest clue what the child's room looks like?

So I can't help but think, did someone genuinely think I might like this or was she just trying to get rid of something she couldn't stand to have in her own house and/or forgot to buy DS a present and found this at the back of a cupboard???

spongebob is a good role model imo. he is very positive. and Sandy is a good example for girls. very assertive for an underwater dwelling Texan squirrel

no, mamag. what was it? is recent addiction for us, you see

squeaver · 08/07/2008 12:52

God, poor you Sugarm. You came on here to have a vent and got totally opinion-mobbed! You weren't even committing that mortal MN sin of overtly middle class (as proved by the charity shop rug).

You don't like Spongebob. You thought your ds got a strange gift. You expressed yourself wittily and this is what you get!

cheesesarnie · 08/07/2008 12:54

gary is my favorite.every snail the dc find is named gary and if any of them have an accident we have sobbing over poor gary the 663rd for ages.

MamaG · 08/07/2008 12:55

Cod's DH (I think) carved spongebob into a halloween pumpkin

it was FAB

FAQ · 08/07/2008 12:56

Damn was going to say I'd have it for DS1's new room (no it doesn't go with his very recently redecorated room - but he loves Spongebob) but I see someone else has got there before me.

scorpio1 · 08/07/2008 12:57

well i was thinking, this could well be the very thing to help dd, with her difficult times at bed times.

BoB Esponja is fairly recent for us too. ex dh treats her rubbish, and Bob makes her happy.

good idea methought.

scorpio1 · 08/07/2008 12:59

what do you think dh would think??lol

WilyWombat · 08/07/2008 13:03

YABU I expect she was having one of those horrible cold sweat "what the hell can I buy for a child I hardly know" moments like I do and said "what does X like" her DS - spotting the spongebob quilt falls in love with it and says "he would like that" she says "really....." like I do then in desperation to get the hell out of the shop buys it

Having said that having a moan about it on here isnt a shooting offence

You do have to come to terms with the fact that you may in fact hate some of the things your beloved child just has to have in his room...the male lack of taste when it comes to furnishing starts young My son has some truly hideous Dr Who figures in his room, the worst in the Face of Boe - which looks like he has pickled an unfortunate wrinkled old man and stuck his head in a jar. So trust me it gets worse

If nothing else it will come in handy when your DC has friends to sleepover.

If you really cant live with it then you could ebay it.

piratecat · 08/07/2008 13:03

its really good!!

I want that duvet cover!!

Goober · 08/07/2008 13:14

She could have checked first.
Sell it on Ebay, then buy DS something with the money.

juniperdewdrop · 08/07/2008 13:17

so when's the mumsnet duvet auction sugar?

bubblagirl · 08/07/2008 13:24

lets hope she's not on here absolutley gutted that a present she has bought has been classed as crap

she may have asked someone what is in nowdays or gone on her own childs likings and cost really shouldnt come into it alot of us do not have lots of money to spend on every child who's b day it is in nursery

maybe its not to your taste but thank you isnt that kind of her to get that regardless of price thought that counts take sticker off and pass it on to someone who will appreciate it
