to think it's a bit off to bring a child with live chicken pox to a family camping weekend away?

I've just come back from a group camping weekend - about 20 or so families with kids of different ages. There was a bloke there with a child of 2 1/2 who was clearly spotty. He looked very uncomfortable when I walked into the communal cooking/hanging out marquee on Saturday morning with my DS who is 16 months and after a few minutes, lent forward and confessed that his DS had chicken pox and his spots had not yet healed over. At the moment I'm not working and so it wouldn't have been a total disaster if my DS had caught it off him, but given that he didn't know everyone there and there were loads of potentially pregnant women as well as a lot of other kids, I thought it was a bit selfish to have brought his son. AIBU?

its catching for 3 weeks before the spots even show. by the time the spots are out, much less so.
and its better for people to get it as kids than adults too. might as well get it out of the way.
yabu, sorry.

You are definitely not being unreasonable

I would be really pissed off in the same situation. From his actions I would say even the father knew it was a bit off.

Not if your child has other health problems AM

Blandmum · 07/07/2008 17:51

Not a problem for most children but this was dreadfully 'bad form' if there were pregnant women there.

LIZS · 07/07/2008 17:53
  • yanbu sil did that to us with ds at around same age at family party , was not pleased.

Amphibimum cp virus incubates for up to 3 weeks but is only only contagious a day or two before spots appear.

Like I said, wasn't particularly worried about my DS (although if we'd been going on holiday next week or something I might have been), it was more the pg women angle. He didn't know everyone there by any means so would have had no idea if anyone was pg.

Some people think that once the spots are out you are OK

ds3 got it at 3 months, was horrid, and there are kids on mn and ayt our school who could be killed by it

spicemonster · 07/07/2008 18:21

I'm so glad you've seen the light amphibimum

Seriously - I was there with a friend without children and I didn't know anyone else well enough to say anything but it just felt a bit wrong (and the bloke seemed to think he was still infectious which made me think it was a particularly odd thing to have brought him along). Apart from anything else, the poor boy clearly wasn't feeling very well so I'm not sure that taking him camping was very kind

It is infectious for 1-2 days before the rash:

HPA leaflet

spicemonster · 07/07/2008 18:36

Do you mean he wasn't still infectious lpp? That leaflet you linked to says: A person with chickenpox is infectious for 1-2 days before symptoms develop and for 5-7 days after the first crop of spots appear. People are not infectious once the rash crusts over.

So I think he was still infectious - definitely no crusting over

No, sorry, was responding to the posts about the possibility for being infectious for the whole incubation period.
Completely agree that you remain infectious after the spots are out

Romy7 · 07/07/2008 18:52

yanbu.
i got kicked out of butlins when i was 7 the minute the rash came out.
they did give the whole family a free holiday later when i wasn't poxy though...
