To think two grown women should know better

Out shopping with MIL and AIL today with DD. DD is 5 and had £5 to spend. Took her in to Clares as she wanted new bobbles etc.

Should add DD is a huge HSM fan as well, so excited by pictures of Troy etc in window.

MIL and AIL kept showing DD stuff, and DD was holding the shopping basket.

After 10 minutes or so they bought her to the checkout and left the shop as I was there waiting to pay with her.

There was loads of stuff, a bag, several bracelets/necklaces - all HSM theme. Also a flask for her DB (ahh if not so shocked at total cost) some strawberry perfume a belt, an Alice band, lip salve ohh and one card of sale bobbles for £1 I stealed myself for about £20 thinking I would treat DD to the rest if that was the case..........

No it was £51.30!!!

After picking myself up off the floor, I started to remove loads of stuff from the bag and asked the very understanding checkout girl to remove them.

DD was fine about taking stuff out, I dont even think she knew half the stuff was in there TBH and with just 5 items left in the bag I got the cost down to £21

MIL and AIL knew DD only had £5 and everything was clearly priced. AIBU or should they have known better or at least ofered some money towards the total cost?

YANBU. I would have gone and found them, then made them pay. For all of it.

nametaken · 06/07/2008 21:39

What a strange thing to do. So they encouraged your dd to put £50 worth of stuff into her basket knowing she only had £5 and then left when it was time to pay - That's just f*cking weirdo behaviour to me, sorry.

Amphibimum · 06/07/2008 21:40

um, they knew she had a fiver... they loaded her up with fifty quids worth anyway... and werent intending to spoil her pay the extra?? v odd behaviour.

2point4kids · 06/07/2008 21:43

Very very odd of them!! Ask them about it!

Whats AIL by the way?

Rachmumoftwo · 06/07/2008 21:43

I think they were setting you up, tbh.

Lowfat · 06/07/2008 21:45

AIL - Aunt MIL sister

If they weren't intending to pay, that was very odd behaviour indeed. YANBU. Do yoou normally get on with them well? Is there any reason they were trying to embarrass you?

Divastrop · 06/07/2008 21:50

did you ask them wtf they thought they were doing?

Lowfat · 06/07/2008 21:50

Normaly get on very well (face to face - you know apart from normal annoying MIL stuff)and they are very generous to my DCs.

And when came out and explained what I had had to do they were very shocked

onepieceoflollipop · 06/07/2008 21:52

Sorry this made me laugh - perhaps they were chatting and otherwise distracted. I have a 4.5 year old and could easily imagine such a scenario!

I recently spent £9 in Clare's on a few bobbles and we were very at that total!

Lowfat · 06/07/2008 21:54

I am laughing now, and DD is more than capable of filling her own basket, but they just kept showing her the stuff.

When we do this sort of shopping normally we trade things 'if you want that you have to put this back' etc

OP posts:
2point4kids · 06/07/2008 21:55

shocked at the amount they had put in the basket or shocked at you putting it all back??

onepieceoflollipop · 06/07/2008 21:58

Lowfat ime a trip to Claire's with a typical 4/5 year old is a very stressful experience and needs the full one to one attention of one adult. It requires incredible negotiating skills to avoid any of the following:
tantrums (s) from child.
shouting from responsible adult.
Bill over £10
headache from all the glitter, shimmer, loud music and squealing pre-teen girls

You deserve a drink I think.

lucyellensmum · 06/07/2008 22:00

lem shudders at the thought of 50 quids worth of claire's tat.

Lowfat · 06/07/2008 22:01

2point4kids - Shocked at how much it was

Lollipop - yeah, thanks...am off to fetch the wine bottle now!

Lowfat · 06/07/2008 22:03

Lem,

We ended up with

HSM bracelet
Alice Band
Strawberry perfum
£1 bobbles
Star necklace

pastapestofor6 · 06/07/2008 22:16

just a thought
PRIMARK = £1 bobbles and lots of them at that

claires is SUCH a rip off !!

Cryptoprocta · 06/07/2008 22:17

How old are they? Did they think bobbles are still tuppence ha'penny?

NorthernLurker · 06/07/2008 22:19

YANBU - they should have known better. leave them at home next time!

TheRealPhartiphukborlz · 06/07/2008 22:23

terrible. childliek bheaviour for adults!

colacubes · 06/07/2008 22:33

Pair of idiots, either to stupid to know better, or are a pair of witches when they get together, ignore them, pathetic!

Quattrocento · 06/07/2008 22:35

That's so bad on so many levels:

  1. Effectively spending someone else's money
  2. Teaching your dd to squander money on cheap tat
  3. Undermining your authority
