Was this out of order or should I be flattered?

I asked an assistant in the electrical dept of Tesco where I'd find a clock-radio with CD.
He was extremely helpful, took me to them, and as I picked one up to pay and thanked him said:
"There you are, you'll never be late for work again".
Then he added:
"Mind you, you don't look like you need to work, you look well-off".
As it happens I work bloody hard..I couldn't decide whether to be miffed or thankful I might look more leisured than I feel!
What do you think?

He was probably panicking at the assumption he'd made that you were consistently late, lol.

scorpio1 · 05/07/2008 22:48

I think he maybe wanted to chat with you

I would be flattered - he obviously thought you looked well turned out

Fimbo · 05/07/2008 22:50

I would be pleased.

I was handed a leaflet today about retirement for the over 50's (I have only just turned 40!)

Gobbledigook · 05/07/2008 22:51

Same as Fimbo - I'd be pleased, certainly not insulted.

Fimbo you are kidding! Conversely I was asked for ID in Sainbo's the other week because I was buying wine! I was like 'er, I'm 35 and have 3 kids!' ha ha!

He'd be right about the constantly late..although in my defence, it's usually because of dds holding me up.
The funny thing was Id didn't feel well turned out... I'd been to the gym so my hair was ok, but had mistakenly taken muddy-bottomed jeans rather than my best ones..and I had trainers on.Still, at 47, I'll take any compliments that come my way!

Gobble it was at a carnival procession and stuff was just being handed out willy nilly.

Having bonded over finding the item in the store, he probably fumbled for something funny to end the moment with (hence the late remark) then made an clumsy attempt at a compliment to finish.

He most likely thought it was good customer relations!

I would be flattered, not miffed. At the very least you must look and sound friendly and approachable!
