they will arrive late from France, so I said she could leave the key out and they'd let themselves in. The dog is a large one, but sleeps inside, will be OK on the bed. They'll leave in the morning. It's not our dog but a friends dog. My mum has never seen this dog and does not have pets herself. She is 70 and not well.

This is not me FWIW, but, I want to hear your views.

I am sorry for my mum to be put in this position and told her "no, don't do it"

What does the mum in question think about it? that's all that matters really: if she is fine with it then it isn't your business, but if she is not happy but doesn't know how to say no without upsetting whoever, then it's a problem I agree.

yvonnek · 03/07/2008 22:18

does she like dogs?

is there lock on the door of the spare room

will dh be in same bed as dog?

malovitt · 03/07/2008 22:18

I wouldn't allow a dog in a bedroom. Ever. For anyone.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 03/07/2008 22:19

I guess it depends how your mum feels about it! It does sound like it might be a bit stressful for her, but without knowing her and her response to the request, it's hard to say.

TurkeyLurkey · 03/07/2008 22:20

Why is the dog sleeping on the bed?
Does your mum mind? Sorry but I'm a bit confused.....

brokenbiscuits · 03/07/2008 22:21

She is not happy, but she doesn't want to upset her daughter (my sister - this is about her dh)

No she does not like dogs and she shares the house with her partner, who is not happy about it but he will go along with mums wishes to keep the peace.

She has just paid out for new carpets in the house

her house.

sounds like she doesn't want them

up to her to say no. leave it to them to sort out.

not your dog, or your dh. if you get involved you may get the blame

TurkeyLurkey · 03/07/2008 22:24

Well, why is the dog there anyway and why is it allowed in the bedroom? Can it not have a bed in the kitchen or something?

ravenAK · 03/07/2008 22:24

Ah well, if that's the case they should tell your BIL to bugger off & get a hotel. Do hotels take dogs though?

They certainly shouldn't feel obligated. I dislike dogs & wouldn't have one in the house (but have useful excuse of toddlers & cats...)

brokenbiscuits · 03/07/2008 22:32

Mum siad she wasn't sure, would need to think about it. sis snapped well if you can't accommodate them you find something else for them!

And mum asked where the dog would sleep, sis siad it alwasy sleeps on the bed, in the bedroom. Im not quite sure how they know that as it isn't there dog. I think they are taking it for someone back to UK (dog has a passport).

Mum found out that travel lodges do take pets for £10 a night and has emailed, but so far no response - sis and bil don't take "no" very well. Hoops must be jumped through.

I am staying out of it now, but there will be trouble ahead.

Its mad.

Yes it sounds bonkers. Steer clear and say nowt.

brokenbiscuits · 03/07/2008 22:34

You couldn't even make this mad stuff up if you tried.

madamez · 03/07/2008 23:27

Sheesh, stay well out of it. WHatever you do you will end up getting spat at and poked crossly by both sides.
