.... "you stay there" to my chocolate labrador, he wouldn't take this to mean "run out of the door as fast as you can"

I mean, my dog is pretty well trained (in so far as he understands a lot of what I say - whether he obeys what I say is quite another matter!) but he's usually pretty good.

But since I have my baby (DS is now 6 weeks) the poor dog is behaving like a petulant toddler.

I try to leave him at home, he's out of the door in front of me and trying to get him in the car (he used to sit in the back seat) is a joke. The dog will not get into the boot, so ends up travelling in the passenger seat up front with me (always wears a dog harness so no problems with him being strapped in)

Other than this, he is great with the baby.... he even comes and stands over me while I change the baby's nappy...

I don't want to tell the dog off - but not sure how to tackle his sudden stubborness to do as he's told!!!

He sounds like he is a bit jealous - he was probably your baby before ds came along, and might be feeling a bit pushed out.
Hard as it is like KOMH said, spend some 1-2-1 time with him and be firm. He sounds gorgeous btw and I'm not a dog fan (I have a cat!).

YCNBS, DH and I had a similar problem with one of our dogs (The other couldn't care less lol) She started acting up when we brought DD home.

She is great with DD but she just got very disobedient which is extremely unlike her. She has got better as DD has gotten older. DD is 7.5mo now and my dog is nearly the same dog she was before DD was born.

It does get better

how old is it?

IME (as a dog trainer apprentice), a dog isn't trained until it obeys...!

I think you need to take back the alpha status; running ahead of you and getting on furniture are signs that the dog is above it's status

It may not like going in the boot as they see the back of the chairs and think "I can't fit in there" - so you have to force the issue to begin with, if you want to of course.

Lewis i have the biggest 4x4!!! i actually think it's because the boot is large and he slips around....

but, phsycologically, he sees the kids jump into the bck of the car (i have 2 sds) and he sees himself as one of the kids (which is how he's treated) so that's where he wants to go too...

dusty - thankyou!!!

i did take the dog out alone this morning ad he didn't want to leave without the baby, who stayed with my dh he kept going back over to the baby as if to say 'mummy, you have forgotton it!'
