Started shoplifting things - help

It’s partly cost of living, but partly the thrill.
I’ve recently realised that I can put an item through as ‘brought my own bag’ on the self service and then I don’t have to pay for said item.
I have done it a few times now in different supermarkets. The other thing I’ve done is steal makeup testers, which I know seems bizarre.
Again I think it’s the thrill. I have ADHD, but I know that’s not an excuse.

Has anyone got any thoughts? I feel like a complete failure.

I expect getting caught will stop it. I used to do similar by not scanning an item or 2 with scan and shop but the idea of getting caught and banned from my local supermarkets made me stop (that and my sister bollocking me)

GrumblingGeek · Yesterday 22:21

you need to find another thrill. that one is stupid.

Nomorecoconutboosts · Yesterday 22:23

You’re going to get caught quite quickly. Most self serve tills have very sensitive cameras. I bought 2 totally identical items and scanned the same one twice (to save trying to find the bar code on the identical item) and a warning came up on the screen. Be careful about using ADHD as a reason/excuse - why mention it on your post if you’re not.

make up testers - yuk - full of germs and other people’s grubby fingers.

Genuine suggestion re the cost of living issue, check out the good to go app. I love the bargains - hopefully your area might have some good ones. My colleagues laugh about how much I love it I call it safe gambling

Didn't realise ADHD can turn someone into a thief. I learn something everyday.

Ilikewinter · Yesterday 22:30

Make up testers are absolutely vile. Maybe catching some god awful disease will stop you nicking them.

DelilahBucket · Yesterday 22:35

Who do you think is paying for your stealing? It isn't a victimless crime. We all pay higher prices because of people like you. As a shop owner I take a very hard line on thieves and I hope you get caught and prosecuted.

I don't know why you've posted here other than for attention. You know you're doing a shitty thing. Any thoughts? Yes, grow the fuck up and stop committing crime.

Good morning conjunctivitis! 👀

Minasama · Yesterday 22:40

Stop shoplifting.

You have control of yourself, whatever modern-day mental health narratives try to justify to you.

EdgyNewt · Yesterday 22:43

They have cameras on the self serve checkouts.

If they suspect you they will check and you will end up banned from the supermarket.

Find a different thrill as theft is pathetic.

kimmylimb · Yesterday 22:52

Don't do it! When you do get caught (you will eventually), you will cringe with embarrassment with a store full of people looking at you. They won't care for your sob story, you will get a police caution against your name, held in a cell or you may actually be charged and have to appear in court. Where will the thrill be then, and was it worth it? It may also affect anything you want to pursue in the future, like travel to various countries where you need a visa and a new job you apply for. Think about what your are doing

I know that some people do shoplift for the thrill of it, but think of what it’s going to feel like with everyone watching you because a customer has seen you put something in your pocket and has told a member of staff. Security can’t be looking at every customer and down every aisle everywhere at once, but customers can. They’re unlikely to prosecute you for a bit of skanky lipstick that every 12 yr old within a ten mile radius has rubbed on their hands when their mum drags them shopping, but imagine being asked to give it back and told you can’t shop there anymore?

Plus everyone has a phone these days and there are so many people who would be over the moon to film you and stick it on your town’s local page. Can you imagine seeing the other mums on the school run the morning after they’ve seen you pop up on their feed for being stopped at the exit for stealing? If you think elephants have long memories, that will follow you and your DC around for years. Every new friend being taken to one side and warned to mind their stuff around you? Your DC finding their friends mums are reluctant to have them come round to play and other kids telling them their mum is a thief.

Get yourself some counselling before a little thrill becomes your biggest regret, you’re having to explain to your DH why you can’t shop in Sainsbury’s anymore and tell your DC that mummy did something very silly. Whatever is lacking in your life, this is not going to fix it.

It doesn't, but it is true that an overwhelming number of prisoners have ADHD, which among many other things, affects impulse control.

Pollyanna87 · Yesterday 23:46

Entirely optional behaviour, btw

Another made up thread off what did not happen.

No ADHD isn’t an excuse so I’m not sure why you’ve mentioned it.

you’re presumably an adult so you can stop yourself. You are just choosing not to.

soon you will get caught if you don’t stop. Imagine the embarrassment

Mistyglade · Yesterday 23:52

Reads like a cry for help to me.

are things going badly elsewhere? Lifting dirty make up testers is pretty odd and pointless, is this really all you’re worth? Or do you think you may actually want to get caught?

Toomanyclothesinthecloset · Yesterday 23:52

"Any thoughts?" Yes...Stop it now.

lazyarse123 · Yesterday 23:59

Will it help you to stop if you know that right minded people think you are a disgusting shank? I used to work in a shop and one of the fun things was to shout to a colleague that we've got another thief in the shop and all the other customers looking.

I’m just here to collect the deletion message.

Re the thrill - is there anything lacking in your life that could be causing you to chase this thrill? How did it start? It may be worth talking to a therapist to understand the reasons behind it as it probably won't be as simple as 'just stop' - to all the posters suggesting that, don't you think she would if she could?
