AIBU to suggest that there should be a minimum age for ear piercings on young children, in particular those who are unable to consent?

For the record, I am not anti piercing. I have 3 ear piercings and 3 others. In particular I had my ears pierced when l asked and was old enough to fully understand.

as soon as she's finished developing.

Why wait ? Consent is hardly an issue here.

Well, quite... but it's a bit difficult to cut them off before they've appeared and grown, surely?

I have a question. Does anyone here who had it done as a baby or toddler resent their parents for doing it? I have never met anyone who is angry about this, but I presume there must be some?

My mom took me as a baby. I don’t resent it at all, and have lots of ear piercings now.
Having said that, I would never pierce a baby, because I just don’t think it’s necessary. It needs to be their choice, not mine. I don’t particularly judge other parents who choose differently.
i took my eldest daughter to get hers done when she was about 9, and my two youngest daughters haven’t asked yet so they haven’t been done.

I just dont understand why? Small children dont need earrings. Why do that?

It used to be a lower social class thing.

There. I’ve said it! 😬🫣 Come for me…

So the whole of Spain are " lower class " then? As its usual for babies to have ears pierced just after birth

Yes i would agree, I would say 10 should be the minimum age

I let my daughter do it when she was nine. Lock me up!

Yeah, cultural differences aside.

I don’t know about Spain. I’m talking about the UK

I think I was being a bit cheeky

So, what would the penalty be for piercing a baby or a young child’s ears? Prison time, or just a fine? Would it be seen as a reason to get social services involved?

Personally, I’d never pierce a very young child’s ears, but I don’t think it’s so egregious that there needs to be laws banning it.

PollyBell · Yesterday 23:50

Yes there should be a minimum age and no idea why it isnt considered child abuse and no using 'culture' shouldn't be an excuse, it's ridiculous

XenoBitch · Yesterday 23:54

it is purely cosmetic. Only people old enough to want a piercing and understand the aftercare etc should be getting them.
