My friend and i were having lunch today with our 20mth old dd's. My friend gave her dd a packet of mini chedders, her dd ate some then wanted to grab a chip off of my friends plate.

My friend said to her dd "No, you can't have that, chips are bad."

I thought to myself, how bizarre that you would be ok giving your dd mini chedders and crisps in general as part of her lunch most days but chips are bad? Surely crisps have more salt etc in than chips would have?

I have heard my say before about chips and how her dd has never had them, said in a they are bad kind of tone.

AIBU for thinking my friend is bizarre in making such a fuss over chips when she gives her dd packets of crisps?

It's not great to refer to any food as "bad" imo.

TheProvincialLady · 02/07/2008 16:24

No she is a loon.

wessexgirl · 02/07/2008 16:25

Nope, that is certainly bizarre.

lizandlulu · 02/07/2008 16:26

how odd. maybe she was doing it for your benefit? like 'oh my child doesnt eat chips, they are not good for her' and didnt think you would notice the other stuff?

maybe i am making excuses for her??

no still doesnt make sense.

IcingOnTheCake · 02/07/2008 16:28

You should have seen her face when i gave my dd a few smarties from my tube!

TheSmallClanger · 02/07/2008 16:28

No, YANBU in thinking she's a bit odd.
I doubt the Cheddars will do any long-term damage, but it does seem to be quite wonky thinking on her part.

BecauseImWorthIt · 02/07/2008 16:28

Chips much better than crisps, IMO - only potatoes and oil (OK, might be salty, but so are crisps!). Goodness knows what flavours/ingredients/additives are in the crisps.

lizandlulu · 02/07/2008 16:29

but she gives hers mini cheddars?

geordieminx · 02/07/2008 16:29

Mini cheddars are so much saltier than regular chips..... madness....

Maybe she is just a greedy cow and wanted to keep them all for herself

Twiglett · 02/07/2008 16:29

she is thinking 'cheddars are baked hence good, chips are fried hence bad'

she's unfortunately exhibiting PFB tendencies

do not fret, she will calm down

Psychomum5 · 02/07/2008 16:29

but chips are not always bad. especially chunky ones that are homemade. they are part of a good mixed diet.

IMHO, it is never good to refer to anything as 'bad', not ideal maybe, but not 'bad'.....makes it all the more desireable IME.

and to say that when said child is eating a snack like mini chedders is a bit odd.

BecauseImWorthIt · 02/07/2008 16:51

And fat is not bad! It is villified beyond all reason.

Children need fat to grow/develop.

A standard oven chip is 5% fat per 100g, so it's hardly a fatty food anyway.

flowerybeanbag · 02/07/2008 16:54

I give DS chips sometimes. They are oven chips and the only ingredients are potato and oil. I wouldn't give him mini cheddars which I am sure are full of all sorts of crap and very salty.

lizandlulu · 02/07/2008 17:42

everything in moderation!

Hulababy · 02/07/2008 17:44

Chips are far better for you than crisps surely?

I hate the idea of any food being called "bad" TBH. All are fine in moderation; you just need to teach about healthy living and eating that's all.

And our chips are home are pretty healthy actually - potatoes baked in the oven with a drizzle of olive oil and a few sprigs of rosemary.

Shoshe · 02/07/2008 17:50

And if she thinks chips are bad, why the blardy hell was she eating them, fine example to her daughter!

Love2bake · 02/07/2008 17:58

Id rather give my kids oven chips ossasionally over 'mini cheddars' - way more crap in them.

Lowfat · 02/07/2008 18:00

YANBU

My SIL commented when I gave my DD a treat size pack of Haribo, because they were full of sugar etc.

A few weeks later at her house she gives our DC's come gingerbread shapes and huge tubes (bigger than toothpaste) of icing to decorate them with.

My dd decorates and put lid on her blue tube. SIL DC throws biscuit on floor and runs off to her room and sits on bed sucking all the icing out fo the tube. SIL laughs it off saying 'oh she always does that'

Am I wrong, please forgive me for thinking that a tube of sugar and food colouring is much worse that a packet of 8 tiny jelly sweets.

lardybump · 02/07/2008 18:16

My dd is 15 months and today while walking back from toddler group we stopped off at the chip shop and bought a portion of chips unwrapped. We then proceeded to the park to eat them.... This is the first time we have done this and dd thougth it was great eating food out of a bag. I must be such a bad mummy!! (my excuse is I am pg and needed some food.)

IcingOnTheCake · 02/07/2008 19:56

The worst part is my friend has the worst diet ever. Never eats proper meals at proper times, eats junk food all the time and rarely ever eats vegetables.

I always think good eating habits for your children mainly helps when the parent has good eating habits themselves!

ChukkyPig · 02/07/2008 20:11

Sounds like your friend is doing her best to give DC better eating habits than she has. But is woefully mis-informed.

MmeBovary · 02/07/2008 20:21

God - here in Belgium chips (and mayo) are the national dish - along with waffles (moreish) and of course more chocolate than you can throw a stick at....followed by generous helpings of beer! Strangely the locals are not all complete lardarses. (I am though cos the wine is loads cheaper than UK Everything in moderation surely..(apart from the wine)....My dd's school dinners would probably be drooled over by Jamie Oliver - anyone for sole meuniere? But she gets chips (and chicken nuggets) once a week with ketchup and mayo and I don't object to the odd bag of crisps or haribo. In fact I haven't had a bag of mini cheddars for ever - they only do strange crips like spag bol flavour here - and now I want some!!!!

MmeBovary · 02/07/2008 20:23

Spring onion flavour....Big sigh - better go and eat that jacket potato and salad that awaits me....

abbierhodes · 02/07/2008 23:25

Lardybump, you sound like a great mummy!!! Chips in the park is an experience no child should miss out on!! Even better in winter I think.
Everything in moderation IMO.
