Poor kids. What about the abuse of women who need money being used. None of it is morally acceptable.

“Each one of these defendants monitored the nannies’ discipline of the children that were happening in the three learning centers,” the district attorney said.
He said during one incident, a nanny had forced a child “to maintain a horse stance” and Xuan could be seen on video laughing.
“In another situation, defendant Xuan entered one of the learning centers while a nanny was striking a child, and instructed the nanny to strike the child harder,” he said.
Hochman alleged that Xuan also beat a child across the child’s bare buttocks and struck the child’s head.
“Defendant Xuan also lifted the child into the air by one arm, while continuing to strike him and repeatedly struck the child’s head from side to side with sufficient force that the child’s body lurched into alternating directions with the blows,” he told reporters.
He said the children were punished, physically abused and beaten “on a daily basis.”

YANBU. Surrogacy, donor sperm, donor eggs - none of it should be legal in my opinion. It’s too ripe for abuse and is inherently unfair to the child.

It's actually more dangerous to carry a child you aren't biologically related to than to carry your own.

Research (such as a study from Ontario published in the Annals of Internal Medicine) shows that gestational surrogates face a 7.8% overall rate of severe maternal complications, which is more than three times higher than unassisted pregnancies (2.3%) and nearly double standard IVF pregnancies (4.3%).

Did anyone see the documentary on BBC iPlayer about Ollie and Gareth Locke and their surrogacy twins? I was appalled. The twins are non identical and boy/girl, so obviously they implanted 2 eggs, happy for the surrogate to take on all the risks so they could presumably get 2 kids (and ‘fashionable’ twins) for the price of 1, with both genders. The twins were then premature and born at 30 weeks (as twins are more likely to be premature), and they now have resulting delays and the 3 year old boy is completely non verbal.

It’s absolutely appalling.

All parents create children as an act of pure selfishness. The reason surrogacy is worse is really just because of the scale of the creation.

Christ. I haven't seen that. Messing with nature doesn't turn out well, a lot of the time.

The story you mention reminds me that gay men use women when it's convenient for them. Similar to trans identified males, who suddenly understand biology when they want to obtain a child. But that's a different thread or ten.

It’s on iPlayer at the moment.

What upset me is that they didn’t even take their delays seriously until they were 3 and then acted like taking them and doing the recommended therapies was just a huge inconvenience, and started arguing about it like the documentary needed some kind of dramatic ‘content’.

Vile

Absolutely we should have tightened laws around surrogacy.

But to say all surrogacy is wrong I think goes too far.

What about women who have had various conditions resulting in needing a hysterectomy or other treatment meaning they cannot carry their own children. If there are surrogates willing, why should we prevent them having their own biological children?

Saying that adoption should be an option for people in this situation sorely underestimates the way an adoptive parent needs to parent their children, in a very therapeutic way. Many people (like me) who are good biological parents would struggle to parent an adopted child with all the challenges adoption can bring.

Or would we say people in this situation should just accept their lot and stay child free? If that's your view, so be it. But it's a harsh one.

Well, have you ever seen a rich surrogate carry a baby for a poor woman?

It’s nearly always a power imbalance, based around money even if they insist otherwise, and over half takes place abroad. So they can take advantage of poor women.

It’s very sad if somebody can’t carry a baby but they’re not entitled to a newborn at any price.

Yes of course that is true. They could've have had 21 children biologically and still abused them. But they didn't. They paid literally poor women to have a child for them, ruined their bodies, have their biological child removed. Then abused the child.

Surrogacy is in no way ok.

but again - its not the surrogacy that has caused the problem, they could have had "normal" births or adoption, they are/were evil without it!

Posting stuff like this is diluting the actual issues with surrogacy

It’s disgusting and what results when a child doesn’t have natural parent to protect them. I wonder whether the egg donors would feel any remorse if they knew these were their children?

Because “natural parents” never abuse their children?

I can see both sides of the surrogacy debate but I think this is a red herring of an argument.
