Hairdresser only taking cash

I live in London and have my colour done every 6 months. It costs £265. Hairdressers is nice enough, the lady who runs/owns it/does my hair is an Albanian woman.
when I started going 2-3 years ago, they kept saying oh the card machine is broken, can you pay cash? There is a card machine next door. Now my daily limit is £50 so I would have to visit the cash machine six times leading up to the appt. I am disabled and do not go out every day. When I first went They gave me the bank details and I paid straight into the account. Just had my hair done and said do you still have the same account? She said oh we are a cash only salon now. You can transfer the money today but in future we are cash only. I heard them telling a few people on the phone when making appointments ‘it is cash only’ and a couple of people actually left and came back with cash. Is this a common thing? Is it time to find a new hairdresser?

I have a small business. I don't take cash. I declare all my earnings and I make no apology for objecting to other people not doing so. They're thieves.

Totally agree.

Businesses that take cash and evade both income tax and vat mean that the rest of us have to pay more to make up for the loss of revenue, or accept shittier public services.

My plumber, my mechanic and even my window cleaner all prefer bank transfers or card payments as it makes it easier for them to do their books. My builder BIL is the same.

The reason banks put cash withdrawal limits on cards is to stop idiots lifting tens of thousands at a time when they want to buy a car and can't be bothered ordering it via their branch

I tried getting £2,000 cash from a bank branch recently, to save me going back and forth to the ATM. The woman at the counter said 'You should have called beforehand to order cash. You do realise we don't print the money here at the bank!' It was £2,000, not £20,000! 😕

Yep. John the plumber must pay his share of Liz truss’s pension, but Amazon and the likes avoiding billions in tax - all fine and dandy, because mumsnetters can’t live without Amazon Prime.

Don't tar us all with the same brush! I avoid Amazon and will only buy through them as an absolute last resort, not just because of their tax dodging but also because of their employment practices.

They're a bloody disgrace.

How naive are you.

I don’t think I’m naive at all, I know exactly why she felt the need to mention she was Albanian as my family are Albanian and have dealt with this shit forever. How ignorant are you?

Gettingbysomehow · Today 10:04

I couldn't be doing with that. I dont like carrying large amounts of cash around. If they wont do a bank transfer I wont go there.

A daily limit of £50 is bizarre. You need to open up a normal bank account.

Don’t go to the hairdressers if you don’t want to pay cash.

I wonder if the OP has set this limit themselves (some people do this to prevent greater loss if the card is stolen or cloned) ?

I pay my hairdresser in cash, but it's considerably less than £265, and he has a machine if I wanted to use it (which I have only done once when I wore the wrong coat without my purse). My account has a daily limit of £250 so I'd have to go twice, and even pulling £250 cash from an ATM would hack me off.

There is a lot of organised crime and money laundering in the uk and unfortunately Albanians (not all) are well known for their participations.

Not that you are stereotyping much....

My hairdresser is fantastic, I pay him cash because that's what I've always done but I think he has a card machine if required . If you are not comfortable doing that I'd get a new hairdresser. I'd also look into a different bank 50 is an incredibly low daily limit , I'd worry in an emergency that I wouldn't be able to access cash.

Well said.

Isn’t it interesting that the racists’ headman Farage is endlessly under suspicion for receiving money against the rules, yet apparently we really need to look to the Albanians 😂😂😂

Ps Have you ever tried to pay a cleaner on the books? Try that, and report back.
