Would you ever asked to borrow this?

The title should read: Would you ever ask to borrow this?

We’re currently travelling abroad with a few other families for half-term via a specialist travel agency. We didn’t know others before but everyone is lovely (this definitely helps as it’s an adventure type of couple of weeks where you inevitably end up sharing a lot of time in quite close quarters with others).

About five days in, away from the civilisation and the usual shops, DH noticed a fellow travelling Dad using a small pair of scissors. This reminded him that he’s not packed his and since DH’s nails have grown a bit, he decided to borrow the said scissors to trim his nails whilst on the trip. The other guy seemed a bit surprised first but kindly shared his scissors.

TBH, I was surprised too as I’d never dream of asking to borrow any personal grooming thing unless it’s family or a close personal friend. DH seems genuinely surprised that I’m surprised!

AIBU to think that it was not a good idea by DH to ask to borrow scissors in these circumstances?

Ugh no I am not sharing my nail scissors with some random guy, no matter how nice! Was the other guy cutting his nails in view of others? That’s gross.

I'm not sure there's anything weird about borrowing nail scissors or clippers to cut nails to be honest.

Goditsmemargaret · Yesterday 21:58

I use a nail clippers and it wouldn't even occur to me to be bothered if somebody else used them.

DarkLion · Yesterday 21:58

Don’t know if my profession just makes me icked out by it but people can break the skin cutting nails and fungal nail infections, other nail bacteria under nails 🤢

This.

seahorsessky · Yesterday 22:00

Fungal infections are a thing, so no, I'd not share.

Dearg · Yesterday 22:03

Ick. No, for all the cost, I would have gone and bought a pair , or clippers. I mean fungus, athletes foot, whatever.

Hummingbird233 · Yesterday 22:03

Wouldn’t bother me in the slightest. I’d give them a wash before handing back, no problems.

LouisFuton · Yesterday 22:06

I don't see a problem with this? Haven't we all borrowed some random women's lippie in a pub toilet when we were young?! 😂

tomorrowfollowstoday · Yesterday 22:07

Fine if sterilised between people, otherwise no.

outerspacepotato · Yesterday 22:08

No, I don't share personal grooming implements, especially with strangers.

Nail fungus is extremely hard to eradicate and there is all sorts of bacteria and other stuff under your nails.

BeeCucumber · Yesterday 22:12

That is absolutely gross. Did travelling Dad cut his nails in front of everyone? Were the scissors actually nail scissors? So many questions!

Letstryandgetitright · Yesterday 22:21

I never ask to borrow anything. And certainly I think asking to borrow personal grooming items is really cheeky.

MajorSamanthaCarter · Yesterday 22:27

Presumably we're talking about finger nails so no it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if someone borrowed them. I certainly wouldn't expect them sterilising.

ladyinka · Yesterday 22:28

Thanks all. To clarify, the owner used them for something completely unrelated - it’s a small multipurpose type of sharp scissors handy for all sorts of stuff. And yes, talking about hands/finger nails only.

I get a bit twitchy when DD borrows mine and there’s no way I’d let DH

5289843DM · Yesterday 22:39

Would he also share a razor or toothbrush with this man? All these items, including nail scissors, have the potential to be contaminated with blood! I'm aware the risks are low and viruses are short lived outside the body (I work in the field) but would rather gnaw my own nails off than share grooming products with a random stranger.

Just read your update, did this man realise what DH was using his scissors for??? If he did, he might not have been so willing to share them. 🤢

It’s not a big deal in the normal world, but as you can see the MN answers never fail to amuse

Well, it obviously was a good idea as the man said yes!

Sunbringer · Yesterday 22:47

No, that risks a fungal infection.

PercyPigInAWig · Yesterday 22:51

No, I wouldn't ask to borrow a stranger's scissors to cut my nails, I would be peeved if someone asked to borrow my scissors and I thought maybe they're cutting a clothes label or something it turns out they're cutting their nails (would not be happy whether hands or feet but feet definitely worse).
I would let immediate family use my scissors.

My sister and I would use each other's tweezers if necessary.

Rayqueen84 · Yesterday 23:18

No different to me sharing lippy etc so wouldn't bother me
