Vaping in non vaping house

RocketPanda · Yesterday 14:04

A question for the vapers among us. I always have to tell anyone vaping to go outside when they visit. Usually after they've had their first puff as you just expect them to ask or take themselves outside like smokers do beforehand.
Talking to other people they seem to have come across this as well.
So do you just go ahead and start sucking or do you ask first?

Or is it an autopilot thing?

Ugh rude of them. It is as bad as smoking and woe betide anyone thought they could do so in my house.

Erin1975 · Yesterday 14:12

Everyone I know that vapes goes outside to do so if they visit our house and I have never asked them to do so, they just do it.

RocketPanda · Yesterday 14:17

I'm very late 50s and vaping visitors tend to be of a similar vintage. So I wonder if they see it as better than smoking as they are all ex smokers.

I hate it. And it is rude to just start without asking.

However, this is one of those areas where habit is worse for vapers than smokers. There were people on one thread saying they do it on planes. People just never stop, because it's 'better' than smoking.

Catsandbooksaremybag · Yesterday 14:39

I always ask first. It's my habit so I consider others, same as I did when I smoked.

Isittimeformynapyet · Yesterday 15:48

I think going outside is the absolute norm and asking permission puts the homeowner in an awkward position.

On a separate note, I can honestly say that, other than a very occasional faint wiff of blueberry or whatever, I have never been able to detect a leftover smell of vaping. It seems as though people saying "it's as bad as smoking" are making a judgement call tbh.

Flamingojune · Yesterday 15:51

You could just start farting

Credittocress · Yesterday 15:54

It’s gross I’d be furious if they did it in my house.

i don’t buy the autopilot thing because whenever they do it somewhere they aren’t supposed to like on a train they do it in this really weird hiding way.

KathleenDarleenDayKnight · Yesterday 15:54

Only once. A friend changed from cigarettes to vapes and his girlfriend was absolutely militant that it was perfectly healthy and had no health impacts at all and therefore he could do it anywhere.
The vape was unflavoured but had an unpleasant and obvious smell.

dontforgetme · Yesterday 15:55

I automatically go outside. I wouldn’t even ask.

Bumbelinaaa · Yesterday 15:56

I’ve had a few guests accidentally catch themselves having a single puff before I’ve even noticed and they always immediately apologise! But they never just actively assume it’s OK! In fact, any vapers have always automatically gone outside. Occasionally I’ll say it’s fine in the kitchen, but they always double check that I’m definitely sure. Anything else is rude, in my opinion.

ClaudiaWankleman · Yesterday 15:57

Like many (most?) things you do in other people's houses, you need permission beforehand. It's so rude to just assume.

TheeNotoriousPIG · Yesterday 16:44

I would insist on them going outside. I suppose that, in that respect, I'm fortunate that I've never had anyone try to smoke/vape in my house before!

Sprogonthetyne · Yesterday 17:21

Your guests are very rude, going outside or at least asking beforehand is the general expectation

StrongandNorthern · Yesterday 18:43

I would always ask.
I do vape, and used to smoke.
As a vaper I feel it is much, much less offensive than smoking. It leaves no residual,l lingering smell (as a previous poster has already said).
I suppose, in a way, I do see it as 'better' than smoking - certainly on a personal level. My health improved dramatically when I quit smoking (unsurprisingly). I had many, many failed attempts to stop - vaping allowed me to succeed. Without trying to sound over dramatic - for me it genuinely was a lifesaver.
I will always continue to ask if people would like me to vape outside - it's their house and their choice. (Usually about 50% of people say 'Yes do' and the others day 'No, it's fine - vape in here'.
BUT ... and I am genuinely interested to know why people (and there are many on this thread) are so vitriolically opposed to it? (I know a consultant in respiratory medicine who described vapes as a brilliant invention - it is literally saving/extending lives).

Because it is better than smoking but it's worse than nothing. It's all just perspective.

Also I'd sooner smell smoke than clouds of blueberry melon. But I know I'm weird. Ex smoker.

Sherararara · Yesterday 19:55

If someone did that in my house I’d be fucking livid. Rude doesn’t even come
close. I’d throw them out.

jetlag92 · Yesterday 19:55

Get better friends who make better choices?

mamaof4losingmymind · Yesterday 20:07

I always ask most people i know are fine with vaping inside but not smoking

purplecorkheart · Yesterday 20:10

In my workplace I have had to come down like a ton of bricks on a couple of staff members about vaping indoors. Trust me the reply of "ah sure it was just a cheeky puff, no one will notice does not end well with me". We still do not know how harmful it is, is it going to be the next massive smoking. I have a responsibility to all the other people I manage.

In my social life I know very few who vape. The few I did used it as a means to give up smoking and were very considerate about going outside away from people.

I recently watched a person vape while waiting on a runway to board a flight. The ground staff certainly did not accept the excuse that it was an absent minded puff. They were returned to the terminal and not allowed board.

In my experience Vapers either think they are rebels or are very very addicted and not know.

I’m a respiratory nurse and vaping has been around for only a short amount of time therefore the long term damage has not been fully assessed.
There is evidence emerging about the damage vaping is doing such as chronic inflammation of the lungs which then causes damage to the lung tissues causing lung disease.

Our resp consultants do not like vapes, people seem to vape more than smoking as it’s more accessible and it ‘never ends’ as when you finish a cigarette it was finished until you have to physically light another one.

People seem to think its ok to vape indoors as there is ‘no left over odour’ but it does settle on surfaces and through the exhaled vapour your exposing people to nicotine, chemicals from the ‘flavours’, metal from the heating coils.

I hate it when I’m walking down the street and I’m in a cloud of flavoured vape!

BibbityBoppityTwo · Yesterday 20:48

In certain lights you can see the vapour in the air and it’s absolutely everywhere, just like smoke would be. I don’t understand why it would be any better than passive smoking to have that in your house, just because you can’t smell it.

CheeseWisely · Yesterday 20:50

I vape in my own house but I would absolutely never in a million years do it in someone else’s house unless they did it first! I wouldn’t even ask, I’d just go outside (or wait until I got home). Even sitting out in a garden if I’m the only vaper I’ll get up and move away, as I would have done when I smoked.

CheeseWisely · Yesterday 20:52

To add, I don’t vape in my own house either if non-vapers / smokers are present.
