Income Tax Threshold Freeze

Is it insane to want to find a way to protest about the income tax threshold freezes. Surely they can't keep them at these levels till 2031. So fed up with this government.

And if they don't take in enough tax the country is worse off and we have not enough money to spend on public services.

We are worse off despite paying more tax, a lot of this is due to changing demographics

How surprising - not.

Of course most of DWP expenditure is on pensions and related benefits. I imagine you wouldn't be so keen to take the money from those.

This area does need reform, we need more means testing & pausing if the triple lock.

Basically the poor don’t earn enough to contribute plus Labour obviously won’t target them. The rich are pretty much done now, the ending of non dom and the tax on worldwide assets made all but the biggest anglophiles give up.
But who else is there? Middle earners who have family ties and jobs based here so they can’t leave, plus Labour oddly sees anyone who aims high as, I don’t know, some kind of class traitor.
The U.K. is one more global shock away from needing a bail out anyway, and then austerity will be forced upon them.

Or a govt could bring in policies to encourage people into work, encourage businesses to hire more workers and make it more difficult/last resort to live long term in benefits. They could make it clear that it isn’t the govts role to make people’s life easy, it’s just to step in and provide short term safety net while people get back to work. Cradle to grave benefits is insane.

But because none of them seem to have actually worked in a business before, let alone run one, they have just misinformed views of what would actually help workers.

JazzyAmbs · Yesterday 06:55

It’s Labour, actually surprised they didn’t reduce levels instead of increase them. Anyone who actually works is generally fucked. Unless you like marmalade of course. Then there’s the doubling of tax on banks, that will have numerous knock on effects whatever your views on banks it won’t end well.

@Ozgirl76 most of the benefits bill goes on pensioners. We have more over 60s than under 15s, demographically we are in a straitjacket.

But the current government, like the people who make laws, can change that.

Its a stealth tax. You can't blame them, they are slashing the tax on gherkins after all. Plus a half arse £100 based on how big your house is...so if you're poor with a big house...

Its a very strange budget. I mean the extra help if you don't earn enough pension...so you could have £1m pension you're drawing down on and decide not to draw cash out for a while you get extra state pension?

I suppose the government could change it. Just like 'poor' people who love in huge houses could move.

Ozgirl76 · Yesterday 07:08

Well if the govt is determined to maintain pensions, they really should be saying, there isn’t money for a big benefits bill as well.

I do understand why pensioners are somewhat protected - it’s harder for them to re enter the workforce. Plus successive govts have failed to put anything in place to replace state pensions.

But the idea that the govts role is to provide a good standard of living to people long term is a very new idea. It’s no wonder there isn’t enough money to go round.

Not if they have a number of kids, live in an area with low house prices (£13,500 for a 3 bed in Blackpool) or its a farmhouse that forms part of the farm business

Stop targeting income tax & target wealth

Isn't that drove the farmers into London? Isn't this an example of what happens when you suggest a wealth tax?

Farmers may not be wealthy but they are often asset rich.

fieldofdoom · Yesterday 08:20

@Landlubber2019wealth taxes encompass more than just farmers… my in-laws have 2m worth of property but still get winter fuel after means testing. It’s ludicrous
