To be utterly fed up after today?

One of those days for sure. Went to a farm for a pumpkin trail and the usual farm things.

First hiccup was with toasting marshmallows. Asked three year old if she wanted to toast marshmallows and she shrieked NO at me. OK then. Her brother then goes to toast his marshmallows and she starts screaming that she wants a marshmallow. £4 poorer and she loses interest in a nanosecond leaving the marshmallow behind Hmm

Next problem is the jumping pillow where she wants to go on but also doesn’t want other children jumping anywhere near her so every time they do she wails and screams.

The ride on cars then cause a huge drama as she didn’t want to wait her turn, and then didn’t want to get off when she got her turn. More wailing and crying.

After lunch she seemed to enjoy the little soft play so I thought the day was salvageable. But then had an argument with her brother over who got to pet the ginuea pig. More tantrums when removed then hit me Hmm

Then I dropped her home while I gave friend and her ds a lift and dad let her fall asleep so now to top it all it’ll be a 10 o clock bedtime 😭

I need to point out this is not by any means a normal day but ffs.

She’s normally not so bad but the shrieked NO when you ask something unreasonable like would you like a drink, do you want to watch some TV, would you like a marshmallow too, really does get to me!

Meh, I know that feeling well OP. You are not alone! I just dont bother with days out like this tbh - expensive rip off and often ends up in the shit show you describe.

It’s all very well saying it was too much for her (possibly but she generally enjoys days out) but it wouldn’t really be fair on her brother to never go anywhere because of her. It’s all a balance, isn’t it?

The last daytime nap she had was July on the way back from holiday so it isn’t a common occurrence.

She is with PILs tomorrow! I did wonder if she might be unwell but she’s eaten well, not sure.

Ah I feel your pain, my three year old is like this 9 times out of 10 on days out but it’s unfair on her older brother to just not do things so I persevere, even though it’s made even more difficult with an 17 month in tow too!

I try to keep our outings short and somewhere close to home so I can bail out if it all gets too much and as pp says wine at the end of the day helps. We all have days like these and parenting small children is hard. I’m attempting the cinema tomorrow with the older two. Pray for me!

Sounds to me like most of those activities are not 3 year old friendly, at least not your 3 year old. Personally i would stop doing activities like this- expensive and just causing unhappiness.

Well, as a rule it doesn’t. But only on MN can you get critical comments for taking a child to a children’s event 🙄

Seriously.

Like you said, on another day she'd have loved it. Just an unfortunate off day.

BlueRidgeMountain · 27/10/2026 21:11

Ah, 3 year olds can behave like dicks sometimes. It’s part of being 3. Most of us have been there and they do come out the other side, and become generally more reasonable too! However, I’d be making bedtime a DH problem for today. That might teach him not to let her nap so late!

Ihadpracticedforweeks · 27/10/2026 21:11

She is finally asleep.

And I shall join her!

This just shows those people who say girls are easier that it is not true! Been there, just get yourself a few minutes to relax tonight (eating marshmallows yourself is optional!)

I never did these sort of “organised activities “ with my dc and they were fine! You can still do things, but not these overwhelming “instagram” memory making family things like pumpkin farms.

Just do a normal walk in some woods? There are loads of things you can do as a family that aren’t like this.

But also three year olds are often dicks, they grow out of it! (Mine are now teens and still occasionally arseholes!)

I sympathise. One of the worst days ever was when we took nephews to a Christmas wonderland. Fights every minute. On the way home screams from the back seat. "he's hitting me" I said, well hit him back and stop moaning. Cue 2nd nephew lamping 1st nephew with a lucky horseshoe he had won at the event.
Never again.
Both adults now and very close.

wfhinpjs · 27/10/2026 22:03

I never had a bad day out with my two when young, and we went everywhere and did everything. Then my dd turned 13 and all went to shit. Thought I’d got through parenting unscathed but no, none of us are that lucky!

Fortunately I’ve only 2 years left until she’s in adulthood, the moods will pass I tell myself.

My 3 year old cried hysterically tonight because he wasn’t allowed to take his pumpkin in the bath. Or to bed.
I feel your pain, I really do.

This made me laugh. How could you be so mean mom, the pumpkin needed a bath before bed.

Did you get any good photos for the 'gram at least?

LizzieVereker · 28/10/2026 16:14

How rude.

Marshmallows are one food to be very wary of as they are a shocking choking hazard to kids.
