Being asked to keep cash?

SpringDreams26 · 26/10/2026 10:44

AIBU to be a bit annoyed the UK Goverment is now asking us to keep cash, where it’s otherwise been effectively eradicated.

I never carry cash and numerous places don’t accept it anylonger!

Emergency preparation absolutely does include power cuts which can be caused by different issues including the recent weather. Include- not limited to.

I think power cuts are more likely, and like we've seen on the news this weekend, more common. We're best preparing for things that we know happen regularly rather than things which may happen.

I probably have £30-40 in the house but don’t agree it will serve any meaningful purpose. In the event of an outage.

It might not for you but it could for someone else. Lots of people have given examples. My mum used to always keep a couple of hundred in cash in her knicker drawer in case of 'emergencies'. It meant that if she needed to call a tradesperson she could likely pay them cash without having to write a cheque (as she wouldn't know how), or go into town. No bank transfers back then. Most places round here, pubs, shops, cafes etc are still happy to take cash and so must carry a 'float' in the till. It just means that if the banking systems are disrupted you won't have to cancel that trip to the pub or whatever (assuming of course they are still open).

I always carry an 'emergency tenner' tucked in my phone. In case my phone goes flat and I need to get a taxi, buy something small or whatever. I only use it occasionally but it's a good safety net. I used to get my son to carry one when he was at college in case his phone went flat and he needed to buy a bus ticket to get home, or something to eat.

Well done OP for getting so outraged at the government for suggesting you have a bit of cash just in case the systems go down. You're aware this happened in Spain for a couple of days this year right? They're only positing it because people are too thick to adult without being told. Looks like they are right.

SpringDreams26 · 26/10/2026 12:22

we don’t have a local corner shop. Only co-ops which are all digitalised and won’t be able to accept cash as their tills won’t work.

Well, you are buggered then. You will have to starve to death.

What's the point of posting if you are determined to beat down everyone offering reasonable explanations / suggestions.

BestMugPlease · 26/10/2026 19:29

Ffs, just seen how much OP allegedly had in cash for Covid. It's another ridiculous troll thread isn't it? All indignation that a government would expect adults to take responsibility for themselves.

This isn’t about power cuts, it’s about data hacks and server outages. Logistics, supply chain and so on.

where did you get that from?

Allegedly 😂 define troll. I’m a person with opinions.

In reality, if we have a cyber crash everyone will rush to the shop with their cash, panic buy and then when stock runs low (because we’re reliant on networks for ordering and supply chain). Then we’d see riots again and stores being looted.

Those who have cash in would have prepared. Humans tend to hunker down and see what happens before desperation kicks in. Then the survival instinct, which the vast majority of us never experience and hope we don't.

You can be cynical and think what's the point. That's alright. You don't have to do anything you don't want to. But you're not going to convince other people I don't think

No not 'everyone' will be dashing to the shop and panic buying.Lots of people have and are ensuring they have several days of supplies in. Quite literally everyone I know has already done this.

Yes me too, I have supplies and we are relatively resilient. My point is, that cash won’t help much.

I haven’t said I won’t do “anything” in fact I’ve done the opposite, I haven’t panic bought but we are relatively resilient anyway because of our lifestyle, in fact DH even got me a light that runs off a drill battery so I can sort the horses in the dark in the event of an outage. We have had power outages before, the lane occasionally gets blocked by trees and the snow makes it difficult to travel so we’re not immune to the co-op being inaccessible.

We have plenty of fire wood and two burners. 2028’s wood is seasoning, plenty for 2027. I have a well stocked kitchen generally although I’ve been more conscious. We have loads of batteries for fencing, tractors, lawn mowers that are kept charged. An abundance of head torches and DH has figured out how to access our boar hole without an electric pump and make it safe for drinking. The animals can drink that too from a stream. Those machinery use diesel so we have that stored here too.

Ive got powered milk on the yard so we’ll have to resort to that, I did have some UHT maybe I’ll get some more.

I have £40 atm too. Shall be sure not to spend it 🙈

Im not at all concerned about the prospect of not having access to my card for 3 days!

My post was never about my lack of resilience but what I saw as a bit of hypocrisy from the government in terms of the keep cash message and what that actually looked like in the events we are anticipating would lead us to need it.

I believe a significant number of people would panic - we’re already seeing panic buying, shortages and gaps on shelves as a consequence the governments message.

We saw exactly the same with Covid.

what use is cash, assuming the retailers do overcome the challenges with its use, if the shelves are stripped bare?

Sorry, I know it's obviously a typo but it made me laugh!

Maybe don't say 'everyone' if you mean some.

Think about it. The proverbial hits the fan and you are not at home and your car is in a car park where you need to pay before the barrier lifts but the banking system is down. Will take cash, if not you have to leave your car but if you have no money how do you get home?

You elderly parents are at the other side of the city, and one is ill, you have a car and no petrol, the pumps are working but cards are not, how do you pay for the petrol?

You are assuming you will be at home when it happens and even if you are, unexpected situations arise, where you may need to buy something.

Oops! I see it now. Neither of us have the stomach to make homemade sausages, although we might come round if we’re literally starved..! I think that would take longer than 3 days though.

Wtf 😂 I can’t think of anywhere I park with a barrier.

Surely if that’s the case my cash under my mattress would be utterly useless anyway? Presumably someone would help me ram or find a weak spot in said barrier. They aren’t that substantial. Or is this hypothetical car park for my exclusive use?

I work from home, the kids school is a mile away. Are we planning for an apocalypse or an outage for up to three days?

My parents are not “elderly” and my brother lives 2 miles from them. So he can pop round.

You knew exactly what I meant and if you look at the facts a significant number of people are already panic buying which has already led to shortages and supply issues.

So it’s not a totally hypothetical scenario - we are seeing this play out, in real time even in the absence of a banking crash. It’s not an illogical conclusion to draw that when there’s more pressure (because of the crash of banking) the behaviour we’re already seeing will escalate further.

Is it really necessary to respond to a perfectly polite post that gave very possible scenarios in such a sarcastic and superior way?

There is no talking with people like you. Its a precautionary measure like having a seatbelt.

Don't bother keeping cash as advised, no skin off my nose. I hope we will never need to test the theory

Teenagerantruns · 27/10/2026 11:27

I always carry some cash, incase my phone dies, twice in recent months l have needed it as the local shop was taking cash only due to problem with card reader.
I normally have cash at home as well. Mot a large amount but enough to do a weeks shop if l need to.

In the English language I use, everyone means....everyone. And your other reply to another poster shows just what you think of hypothetical scenarios. You really only like what comments suit you.
