To Ask For Compensation - Hotel Incident?

Not sure what to do here. Am staying two nights in a hotel with my DD who is 17 and has anxiety and OCD. She is on medication but is easily triggered, especially when hearing arguing. Last night the guests in the room opposite us were being very loud, singing, partying, playing music and smoking. We didn’t complain as we could hear it but could have slept through but the hotel management received several complaints from other guests. The manager came to talk to them, which we could hear clearly (every word) and asked them to pack it in and asked for the guests who weren’t staying in that specific room to return to their room. They were a bit argumentative but apologised and said they would tone it down etc. Anyway, some time later at 11pm ish, the noise levels were the same and the manager came back to tell them off again. We were actually asleep but it was the manager knocking on their door and the argument that ensued that disturbed us and woke us up. This time, they were drunker and abusive to the manager, swearing a lot, arguing nonsensically. My DD got in bed with me and was visibly distressed. To be honest, I didn’t like it either as it sounded like one of the men was going to be physically violent to the hotel manager and it was a bit scary. The manager went away in the end and they went quiet. Although it was unpleasant I think they decided to finally go to sleep. However, past midnight, the police arrived and knocked on the door, waking us up again and it all kicked off with arguing going on for at least 40 minutes whilst they packed up their stuff. At least one of them was arrested and they were all kicked out. Anyway, sorry for the long post but my question is should i complain or ask for some compensation even though it was the guests who were at fault and not the hotel mostly? The experience did ruin our nice night in the hotel. I also think if the police hadn’t been called, it would have been less disruptive in the end, but I do understand why they called them. I feel guilty complaining when it was a horrible experience for the poor manager, but on the other hand, maybe it is my right to given our experience was affected too?

I personally wouldn't ask for compensation as it wasn't the hotels fault, they did what they could to get the other guests to calm.

The joys of staying in a hotel.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 26/10/2026 08:36

Yes, I'd ask to be compensated for this.

madnessitellyou · 26/10/2026 08:37

Compensation maybe, but I’d be wanting a refund.

MyYellowLabradorLife · 26/10/2026 08:38

It’s not the hotel’s fault is it? Sounds like they dealt with it perfectly. They were quite within their rights to call the police and you said yourself it sounds like they could have turned violent so sounds like they had little choice.

what do you expect them to do? Reimburse everyone in the vicinity?

Damnloginpopup · 26/10/2026 08:40

Full refund and free breakfast.

Bouncywaves · 26/10/2026 08:41

Well it was the hotel that booked these guests. I wouldn't think the noise was acceptable. Matters were in the hands of the hotel, not the guests.

graceinspace999 · 26/10/2026 08:44

I don’t know if you’re entitled to anything- maybe you are???

But it would be lovely if the noisy ones could be fined for their behaviour and the money used to buy their neighbours a nice meal.

PressedThistle · 26/10/2026 08:44

Sounds like it was all over by 1am so you must have got at least a few hours sleep? I wouldn't ask for any refunds/compensation unless I'd had literally zero sleep because of the disturbance.

Financegoddess · 26/10/2026 08:53

Have we really got to the point that the answer is I need compensating for everything?

What’s next?

My partner broke up with me at your café - I want a free latte for emotional distress

It rained on my picnic I held in your car park - refund for the sandwiches

Your music was too good and I danced too hard - now my feet hurt. Compensation please.

The candle I bought smelled so nice I relaxed too much and missed my bus - your fault.

Your dog looked at mine funny - my dog is traumatised. Where’s the cheque?

I bought healthy food and I still feel hungry - that’s false advertising.

The book I read had a sad ending - I want a refund and a hug.

My ice cream melted before I got home - your freezer isn’t working hard enough.

Your lift was too smooth - now I don’t feel awake enough for work. Pay me.

I saw a spider near your entrance - I’m traumatised. Also the spider is fine.

its just become ridiculous!

🙄🙄

Mummadeze · 26/10/2026 09:07

None of those examples are in anyway similar to paying for a nice hotel and being subjected to a Jerry springer / Jeremy Kyle type experience for several hours outside your door to be fair.

If you’d asked at the time to be moved / given a room elsewhere to sleep in for the night they probably would have sorted that but you didn’t so what did you expect them to do? Psychically know in advance that these guests would cause trouble?

Where there's blame, there's a claim! 😂

How are they supposed to psychically know what guests might be a problem from just their name on the booking? Or are you suggesting they should have been turned away once they arrived if they "looked" like the sort of people that might be loud. Are you honestly saying you dont see any issues with that?

This. It isnt the hotel's fault. They may refund you as a gesture of goodwill but compensation? Really?

DustyOwl · 26/10/2026 09:22

A free breakfast maybe but it sounds like it was dealt with well, to ensure it didn’t happen again. I hope you have a better day today.

Bananacrepewithnuts · 26/10/2026 09:22

If you check the small print somewhere no doubt there's a policy on unruly guests and the course of action etc.

CleanSkin · 26/10/2026 09:27

You can try, obviously; I’m sure other guests will do so too.
If it’s one of a chain then they’re likely to have a refund policy & will work within that.
If it’s an independent hotel then I’d just ask for a free breakfast (or similar) especially if you’re also there tonight.

I hope your daughter felt better for being in with you & isn’t put off hotels; enjoy your day together.

TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne · 26/10/2026 08:36

Yes, I'd ask to be compensated for this.

On what grounds, who are you asking for the compensation?

The hotel dealt with the situation to keep everyone safe by evicting the other residents. If you take it to court then the court would deem the hotel acted to keep people safe from those revealing loudly in the hotel and causing a nuisance. So acted within the realms of what they should be doing when a disturbance occurs.

You don't know who those customers are, so can't ask them for compensation

Maisymouse2 · 26/10/2026 09:30

I think the police showing up was them ensuring every guests safety and peace. stay for the hotel gueats was a good idea.
No to asking for reimbursement

zoeslim · 26/10/2026 09:33

No one died
It is not a big deal as you can see by the responses you are getting here

PinkMicrowave · 26/10/2026 09:35

I stayed in a hotel where the guests above flooded their bathroom, which in turn came through the ceiling into our bathroom. There was no damage to our stuff but it was disruptive and inconvenient as we had to move to a different room to shower or use the toilet.

The offer from the hotel was to comp all the add ons - breakfast, mini fridge, a couple of drinks in the bar. I thought this was fair and would seek similar in your situation as I'd deem it broadly equivalent.

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 26/10/2026 09:37

Oh ffs.

Ginmonkeyagain · 26/10/2026 09:42

You could make a polite and constructive complaint and see what happens but I don't think you are automatically owed anything. It sounds as if the hotel did the right thing and tried their best to deal with the noisy and disruptive guests.

A few years ago we stayed at a chain hotel as Mr Monkey was running a marathon in the city the next day. There was an event in a conference annex of the hotel and some of the guests set off the fire alarms at 1am with unauthorised use of a smoke machine. We mentioned it when we checked out and they offered us a free nights stay at a later date by way of apology.
