To ask what you use for cleaning pierced earrings/ears now that Claire’s Accessories no longer exists

Claire’s cleaning lotion for pierced ears/earrings has been my go-to for decades whenever I was putting new earrings in. It was affordable, mild, etc. Used to stock up from Amazon whenever I got through a bottle. But apparently Claire’s Accessories has gone bust and I can no longer find the lotion to buy. What should I be using instead to clean new earrings before I put them in? I know some people don’t bother, but that feels unhygienic to me.

Just salt water would be what I used

melissasummerfield · 24/10/2026 21:45

I hope im not in the minority here but I have never cleaned new earings / my piercings 😳 i though that cleaning fluid was just for freshly pierced ears?!

ChloeCannotCanCan · 24/10/2026 21:46

A sterile saline spray like SteriPierce - we bought it from the piercing salon but you can also get it from Amazon

TeenLifeMum · 24/10/2026 21:47

Tea tree oil or saline for newly pierced.

BashfulClam · 24/10/2026 21:49

You can buy saline next to the contact lens solutions in shops.

FortyFacedFuckers · 24/10/2026 21:53

Never used the Claire’s one but if I am having any trouble with a piercing I use Neilsmed

EverardDeTroyes · 24/10/2026 21:53

Surgical spirit. Boots sells it.

FortyFacedFuckers · 24/10/2026 21:54

Oh I just re read and see it’s for the earrings and not the actual piercing sorry

BuffaloCauliflower · 24/10/2026 21:55

The only thing anyone should be cleaning a new piercing site (aka an open wound) with is saline solution. Boiling water and sea salt, let it cool, clean piercing. Nothing else. No reputable piercer would advise otherwise .

BuffaloCauliflower · 24/10/2026 21:57

For the earrings themself, same thing. Saline.

NoodleNuts · 24/10/2026 21:58

I've had my ears pierced for over 50 years now and have never cleaned my earrings or ears when putting new earrings in. I didn't realise that you were supposed to!

Barrydoughnut · 24/10/2026 22:00

Saline solution. My DCs had their ears pierced at a piercing studio so I just bought it from there but I don’t think it’s difficult to find. If need be, as a local piecing place to sell you some.

I think it’s just cooled, boiled water with salt but I did buy it for my DDs as I was most comfortable with that.

BaronessBomburst · 24/10/2026 22:01

I just use soap and water, although I don't always bother.

Dassssy · 24/10/2026 22:01

Earings shouldn't need to be "cleasned". If it's for a new piercing use salt water and don't rotate them or touch them.

YankSplaining · 24/10/2026 22:08

Just to clarify, Claire’s didn’t go bust and does in fact still exist, but they did withdraw from the UK market and close a lot of their US stores after declaring bankruptcy.

I never even thought of cleaning new earrings and didn’t realize that people did that.

WaffleMacGubbins · 24/10/2026 22:33

Never even thought about cleaning new earrings! If your piercings have healed, there's not an open wound to worry about infection risk. Wouldn't it just be the same as putting the earrings on any other skin, are you concerned about holding them between your fingers?
But if it feels wrong, why not just wash them in warm soapy water and rinse? Soap kills most things.

Yes I thought you cleaned your ears for 6 weeks when the piercing was new and that was it!
had mine done at 11 I’m 46 now
I’ve never cleaned a pair of earrings in my life!

PimblePumble · 24/10/2026 22:36

I don't clean earrings, why do you think you should?

OriginalSkang · 24/10/2026 22:37

I don't clean piercings once they've healed other than in the shower or whatever

WhyArePiratesCalledPirates · 24/10/2026 22:38

Ive had a few redone in the last 10 years. Salt in water. Boil the kettle. Pour some out. Add salt. Let it cool for a bit.
Literally all you need.

I have never ever cleaned earrings before wearing thenm. I'm 62 and this the first I have ever heard of this.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/10/2026 22:46

I use rubbing alcohol 90%, I think.

maxslice · 24/10/2026 23:02

Hydrogen peroxide

Catza · 24/10/2026 23:14

43, had multiple piercings since the age of 11 and not once cleaned anything once the initial piercing has healed up. It's skin like any other. Your skin is a protective barrier in itself. Unless you wash every new item of clothing, deep clean your brand new sofa or disinfect your new toothbrush, there isn't anything special you need to do with new earrings either.

OrangeFlower14 · 24/10/2026 23:18

I thought you only had to clean them when they were new

Anyway, surgical spirit is the answer. I bet that’s cheaper than whatever Claires were selling.
