Working in cafes

I went to a small independent cafe I like this morning.
The tables were pretty close together, we ended up sat next to a woman with a laptop and phone out and proceeded to have a chat and catch up. All whilst this woman was apparently scowling and grimacing at us. I couldn’t see her face as she was same side as me, but I heard the tutting.
I know there have been previous threads on this, but we weren’t noisy , and I won’t sit quietly to enable someone to sit and work.

What makes you think she was tutting at you? I often tut at the work stuff while sitting alone in my house. Especially when I have 60 "daily digest" and "weekly update from CEO" emails landing in my box which I have neither signed up for no have any ability to unsubscribe from. There may have even been a few c-words flying around this morning as I was setting up my Outlook rules to send it all straight to junk.

We work at the same place, for sure 😂

OP - I wouldn't work in a cafe but if you ever sat next to me while working, you'd hear a lot of tutting and muttering and loud sighs. I probably scowl too, I've never checked.

If her behaviour was directed at you and your friend, though, then she was being unreasonable.

As I said, I couldn’t see the scowling and grimacing as I was sitting the same side as her. It was my friend who said it coincided with the tutting and felt it was definitely aimed at us - worse when we dared laugh

So you didn't see anything and didn't mind till your friend pointed out how she felt. And you then decided you were sufficiently offended by this imaginary event to go and start a thread about it... tut tut tut

Is that the benchmark for having a moan now - it's only permitted if something has resulted in your own demise?

If that’s the case, MNs is over 😆

Moaning can only happen in the afterlife now.
That's the rule.

MN can only have positive threads.

Well no, I found the regular tutting a bit odd. Not used to hearing that . Then I suppose I noticed my friend started looking a bit stressed.
In such a small cafe it felt uncomfortable. And as I said, any laughing from us seemed to produce more tutting .

People who work in cafes and expect quiet are annoying.

She wanted to go to the cafe to work, and you wanted to go for a catch up.
Neither of you are in the wrong here.
Although, I am curious as to how someone grimacing can ruin your day?

Since when have coffee shops become workplaces where you have to watch your tone of voice for fear of disturbing them?

AuroraBloom · 23/10/2026 21:15

Coffee shops are not work places. The laptop brigade with their one coffee for hours, usually taking the best tables are annoying.

Why were you watching so intensely that you noticed 'scowling' & 'grimacing'. She might be scowling & grimacing at her work - I do that if I get an email from a certain colleague!!

I stick my headphones on anyway so not bothered by chatting - unless it's that awful loud laughter that some groups ow women have - but that winds me up everywhere.

The only thing that winds me up is one bloke who shuts himself in the only toilet cubicle every time he takes an important client call. Meaning there's often a queue formed by the time he gets out.

Same. It seems working bitchface is a problem.

Many coffee shops are very quiet during a work day, outside of lunch time. Having customers take up space isn’t a problem, and most will have regular drinks, keep themselves to themselves and are little issue. The buggie brigade coming 4 of them taking up twice as much space, feeding their kids food they bring in, loud and irritating can be far more of a problem for cafe owners.

Ha, I know what you mean about the buggy brigade. They also change nappies on the tables too.

The laptop brigade is what can keep some places going.
My DP WFH and spends most of his working day in cafes. He spends over £200pm doing so.

I would like to see laptops banned in cafes. I went to the Foyles bookshop cafe today. It was full, and I mean full, of tables with one person sitting on them with a lap top, and papers etc spread out. Who wants to plonk themselves in an open plan office when you are looking for a relaxing coffee in nice surroundings.
