To ask how to make rental flat less likely to sell?

RainingPasta · 23/10/2026 11:37

My son and his girlfriend have been renting a nice flat for the past couple of years but the LL now wants to sell it. They haven’t officially been given notice yet so it looks like the agent will be conducting viewings while they still live there.

They will still keep it clean and tidy but they are wondering if there is anything else they could do to make it less appealing. I suggested removing all their homely touches like cushions, rugs and pictures so it looks cold and bare but I’m not sure if that is a good idea?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. They want to delay the sale and might even be able to buy it themselves if it goes down enough in price.

@RainingPastaSRSLY give it a rest with the snippy responses. What you’re proposing to advise your son to do is really not right and I can’t quite believe you think it’s fine.

It’s the internet: we’ve very little idea whether you’re responding tongue in cheek or applauding the arseholery of others.

Fortunately, you dont get to police my comments, snippy or otherwise.

If they are interested in buying the property I would recommend they keep the LL onside. Refusing viewings won’t endear them to him.

Sensible approach would be to tell LL they are interested and try to get to the point where they can proceed asap.

You do realise that if there was any outside chance that buying so much as a derelict bedsit/studio flat, then OP’s son & gf would NOT be renting to begin with!
It honestly astonishes me that it simply doesn’t occur to so many on here, that some people really cannot buy any property! Yes, even full time working couples without children. That’s what all the discourse surrounding today’s housing market & affordability etc, is talking about!
My own parents worked full time <dad also worked p/t 2 nights a week> and even then, in the 80s & 90s, only just managed to scrape by to provide for us after their mortgage. These days they’d have zero chance, even if a deposit wasn’t needed - not a chance.

Hopefully MNHQ will, though.

You should have at least read the op, the landlord is planning on selling, they can serve notice as they intend to sell, no one is suggesting they serve notice for putting off buyers as the reason lol

I’m fully aware of that! It’s you who didn’t read correctly. I’m replying to PP’s post which implied that OP’s DS could get evicted for ‘putting off buyers’ which is nonsense!

cattussuperior · 23/10/2026 16:25

The son and gf could move in with the OP… though I’m guessing that’s the least appealing option of all 😂

They would if I had said anything wrong. I don’t think alleged immorality is against their rules though.

Why on earth would MNHQ “police” OP’s comments for the crime of disagreeing with you?! Give your head a shake

Charlenedickens · 23/10/2026 16:26

Op just be a grown up, your son and partner can be legitimately evicted, if the landlord intends to sell and likely will be, as buying with a sitting tennent is very difficult,

childish ideas of delaying rhe sale, making it less appealing and getting the price to drop so they can buy it shows a complete lack of any form of understanding of the Reality of tne situation they are in, the landlord doesn’t need to put up with any of that nonsense, will simply serve notice and sell in the spring,

your son needs to grasp the reality of their situation and look for another property quickly, and he needs to realise they need a reference, as it’s a landlords market right now and many many renters are struggling,

moonraker0 · 23/10/2026 16:26

Youl always have uncertainty when you rent, circumstances can change for LL’s and new laws and legislations make it less appealing to be a LL now. The only way to remove the uncertainty is to buy, they’d be better off moving back home and saving like crazy for a deposit. Once they have their own place it’s theirs and they don’t have to worry.

@doublebusyNo, you misunderstand. It’s not about disagreeing with me: I’ve reported the entire thread.

I’d be concerned if my adult son and his GF found the idea of moving back in with his parents appealing. They are an independent, professional couple.

And? Since when were MNHQ ruled by you!? That’s twice you’ve implied that you’re somehow more superior on here than the rest of us!

There is no benefit to them in looking for a new property now when they haven’t even been served notice.

Oh dear, you clearly have no coherent arguments if you have to resort to criticising grammar.

OP posts:

RainingPasta · 23/10/2026 12:51

Hardly. I wasn’t even suggesting that they make the place dirty or untidy, just that (shock, horror) it might make it less appealing to buyers if they removed cushions and rugs.

How can I live with such lack of morals and scruples?

Don’t forget to check your mirrors with all of the back-pedalling you’re doing.

No, the opposite

He wants to sell
he’ll need viewings so he will obviously evict them to enable this
as you said rentals are hard to come by so being evicted doesn’t make you a good potential tenant
you’d be better working on finding them a new rental
rather than some ridiculous scheme to put off viewers
Aldo they can persue them for eviction cost it they don’t pay them they end up with a ccj no one will take them as tenants

I have coherent arguments AND be capable of criticising grammar. It is a logical fallacy to suggest the two cannot co exist.
