To find the new Alexa ad sexist and disturbing

The premise seems to be: men can’t help their aggression and swearing, but they have to try to rein it in for the sake of the women and children, so Alexa steps in to help.
I googled the man in question and apparently he’s well known, but I had no idea who he was. What I see is a man being aggressive, AI playing music so ‘the cops aren’t called,’ leaving his sister and the children outside while he tries to get his aggression out of his system.

And I really don’t like the way this portrays women as genteel, non-swearing creatures who need protecting from men’s behaviour. Women swear. We don’t need to be cast as the delicate audience for men trying to manage their own behaviour.

Alexa being a female and coaching this poor aggressive man just adds to the weirdness
The whole premise feels pretty patronising

Do men as it isn't 'people' in this case have so much pent up anger, they have to do this? It strikes me as at the best, very immature and at the worst, sort yourself out mate, get some anger management therapy.

Um, you do realise it's a humorous ad and not a documentary about a real person, right? Also, I don't understand your comment about it being men and not people. The female version with the 'swear box' has been mentioned loads already.

That makes more sense. But only 900,000 people in the UK have an Apple sub so could ever have seen Ted Lasso. Assuming a very very generous half of subscribers have seen it, that makes 450,000 out of 65m population. So 0.7% of the population will know the context. For the rest, it’s an aggressive man being calmed by a woman before he sees his family. Not a good message.

plus I hate the implication he’s calling Alexa a cheeky ‘cunt’ at the end.

I don’t have an apple subscription, I haven’t seen the show, but I’ve seen more than enough of the character on SM reels to understand the context.

I'm unsure why so many people are convinced this context is understood by most of the population of the UK. Some of us don't have an apple subscription, many of us do not have time to watch SM reels or would rather read a book.

I simply don't watch enough adverts for this to mean anything to me and I don't think I have ever found a marketing campaign, 'funny'.

As I said upthread, less than 0.7% of the UK population have seen it if you look at the stats. Of course I’ve heard of it, but have never watched it.

It's not a niche TV show, people may not have subscribed to Apple TV to watch but you they will have watched on their 'dodgy' sticks. You can also watch it via Amazon prime. I've never watched it but am familiar with the character through clips, trailers etc

Maybe lay off watching SM reels about something you’ve never watched then. This is not a flex

I think you are totally overreacting.

I have no idea who is. I just watched the ad. He’s not doing anything aggressively at all. He’s just swearing and getting it out before the kids get there.

geekone · 25/10/2026 09:40

I am worried op about your aggressive tendencies?? I see an adult person using all his swear words so that he manages to not swear in front of small children. Sweating isn’t aggressive in itself it’s just swearing, you say you swear a lot maybe you do it in anger maybe you are showing aggression but Brett isn’t. For your info to, Brett isn’t just an actor on the show he’s a writer specifically he wrote his very sweary character!

I just watched it, hadn’t seen it before. It’s nothing to do with a man needing to get his aggression out and calm down before seeing women and children though so a little irrelevant

It’s not about calming down before seeing children and women. It’s about not swearing in front of a child.

Netcurtainnelly · 25/10/2026 10:27

It's horrible.

Ah you got me there, what a catch. Not surprised you’re concerned about my ‘aggressive tendencies’….. 🙄

What annoys me is that they’ve put the actual ring chime on the ad. Makes my cats fly off my knee if they are sat on it before I get to remote to mute the ad. They think I’m going to leap up to get the door!

Bet it winds a few dogs up as well

What? My Alexa hardly ever responds to anything I ask. All the Alexa- related swearing is on my side. I don't really understand - does this mean that when you say 'Alexa, set timer for 10 minutes' you are subjected to a load of abuse? Why would anyone spend money on that (over the ages of 15 anyway!)

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 25/10/2026 12:24

Agree it’s a strange advert
