AIBU to feel horrified at the number of Motability vehicles being provided?

Just read this in the Telegraph about what the Americans think of our welfare spending:

“It also shocks Americans to learn that almost one in every five new cars sold in Britain is provided through Motability, the taxpayer-backed car scheme. The equivalent in the United States would be every Chevy, GMC, Buick and Cadillac sold through welfare. Or every Ford”

One of my friend’s daughters, aged 27, who has never worked, has several children with various diagnoses and is a single parent recently received a top of the range car, got to choose the colour and was given a ‘big reveal’ at the garage when she collected it. She has now been given a new four bedroomed detached house, something my own hardworking children could never manage.

Something is very, very wrong in this country.

Their posts have more holes than a swiss cheese.
Me thinks deliberately offensive to get a reaction.

Yep, there are better and healthier ways to get your kicks than punch down at disabled kids and their parents.

20+ years ago I worked in social housing. You might be surprised to know that quite a lot of tenants never paid any rent, it was all covered by housing benefit.

That’s not surprising. It’s obvious.

Trottersup · 22/10/2026 21:56

Think OP is having a cheese dream. That or it's a Daily Mail reporter stirring things up for a story.

I don't even have kids 😂

Me neither. It's not compulsory (or even necessary!) in order to recognise the contributions of certain posters for what they are...

If you don’t have a job you don’t pay tax. Paying some tax back to the government out of the money they GIVE you in the first place isn’t ’paying tax’ 😂

What makes you think someone on PIP is not working - I am on PIP and if I wanted to, could show you my tax return and tax payments. Many of us could and then of course, disabled people who have some money and can get out of the house, spend that money, which includes VAT, and benefits the local economy.

Resorting to insults? How refreshing. Well done.

Do they exchange labour for the money they receive from your taxes?

So you do believe in workhouses if people have to exchange labour for taxpayer funds?

Looking after severely disabled children costs considerably less because they don’t have to go into state care which costs taxpayers many more thousands of pounds.

Society should take support people who cannot take care of themselves, because we should judge society on how it treats the poor and disabled. And yes, I am judging you.

A very close friend works for a housing association. She comes across lots of peole receivng disability benefits, including this scheme. It might be used correctly by some but is definitely abused by others. I think you should get a basic car if you need it . Not a top of the range new one. The money saved on that would be much better used on teaching assistants for kids with SEND in schools....

People pay extra from their own money if they want a nicer car.

Judge away. That’s your perogative! I’m not the only one who thinks a woman with three children at 27 should not be driving a brand new car or living in a brand new tax payer funded house.

Greenismyfavouritecolournow · 22/10/2026 22:09

Still waiting on a bus.
