To think that this menu isn’t suitable for children?

A few months ago I booked to take my children to Matilda in Concert at the Royal Albert Hall this month (October), I had to book hospitality tickets because those were the only tickets left at the time of booking. And then today have been sent an email with the hospitality details and this is the menu! They don’t have a separate children’s menu either even though Matilda is a family event! AIBU to think this menu isn’t suitable for children? My children have autism and are very fussy so the only thing that they will eat on this menu will be the desserts but even then I don’t think there’s much on this menu that most neurotypical children would eat either? In my opinion it’s not suitable for families or children even though it’s supposed to be a family event!

I’ve copied and pasted the menu below incase the image doesn’t work:

Snacks (served pre-show):
Black garlic polenta crackers

Seaweed tapioca crackers

Canapés (served pre-show):
Glazed beef skewer, chimichurri

Parmesan churros, tomato and Parmesan sauce (V)

Cold Bowl (served pre-show):

Pumpkin seed houmous, maple-roast pumpkin, pomegranate, pickled pumpkin ribbons, mint oil

Sliders (served pre-show):
28-day dry-aged beef patty, crispy bacon, tarragon and chive aioli, confit garlic,
served with potato hash puffs, truffle mayo

Moroccan-Spiced lamb slider, grilled onions, sumac mayonnaise & pickled cucumber,
served with buffalo cauliflower

Dessert canapés (served during the interval):
Mango, passion fruit, coconut pavlova

Millionaire's chocolate mousse, salted caramel, vanilla sablé

Milk and Cookies

Drinks:

Trebbiano, Rubicone, Novità
Sangiovese, Rubicone, Novità
Estrella Galicia 4.7%
Ginger bitters (soft cocktail)
Sparkling mineral water
Still mineral water

A chance to try different foods is often a major component of a fun night out. It can be the only component of a fun night out!

for me it is! Not for kids really

I think the event seems aimed at adults , hod know why, I loathe the little know it all Matilda 😂 and suffered enough kids’ films when when mine were young

But in answer to the op’s question, I still think the food options not good for kids

Many of us on here would disagree, however, it obviously depends on the child.

I don't have a clue what half this stuff is. I am old but I would not want to choose something from that list. What is a slider?

I wasn't sure either at first but it took seconds to Google.

Most upper middle class menu ever. My DC would eat the dessert and naff all else. We’re veggie anyway so the main would be pumpkin and hummus, seriously?

It’s an upper MC venue so not surprising. Most people going there will expect food like this.

katzrooldogzdrool · 22/10/2026 12:08

I would eat almost everything from that menu and so would most children that I know, but if yours won't, you could bring something plain like small cheese sandwiches in a tupperware box (preferably nothing too smelly). And here's a news flash-not every event has to be child-centred.

Overthebow · 22/10/2026 12:08

Nylonflares · 22/10/2026 06:35

The other point is that this is supposed to be a fun night out, not a chance to try different and unusual foods

Or a chance to show off about the amazing range of food your precious DC will eat. There’ll be the ones eating nothing but nuggets and chips when they can!

To lots of people this menu isn’t different or unusual foods, it’s standard food and ingredients. It’s essentially burger, cheese pastry and dessert. My 6 year old dd is ND and has issues with some textures and foods, but she’s tried black garlic, seaweed crackers, aioli and truffle mayonnaise, they’re fairly standard foods and ingredients. She wouldn’t necessarily eat everything on that menu (she wouldn’t be eating the hummus bowl), but she’d eat the cheese churros, burger and dessert as that’s all fairly standard kids food. It’s the Royal Albert Hall, it’s nots going to be serving nuggets and chips is it?

MzHz · 22/10/2026 12:14

I see the competitively ignorant are in again 🙄

MC menu?

it’s the Royal Albert Hall ffs. It’s hospitality tickets. What do some of you expect? Chicken nuggets and fish fingers? Aren’t you even aware of how totally out of touch you are that you think everyone eats beige crap all the time? Seriously, you’re trolling, you must be, nobody is this unworldly.

<rant over>

@Mummyofabear i think your best bet is to take some snacks that you know your kids will eat and let them eat what they want to. At the end of the day, you have to look at it that you wanted to go, if they’d have had non hospitality tickets, that would be what you would have bought. So look at the menu as irrelevant to your day, don’t even factor it in with the kids.

fwiw - and I get that this isn’t at all helpful to you - sorry - my son from 2yo and upwards would have dived head first in to any and all of that menu, but you could put salt and pepper on a chair leg and he’d have had a go at eating it.

Maddy70 · 22/10/2026 12:44

I agree in part but my children would have loved that.
It's humus ... Everyone likes hummus ?
Sliders are basically burgers so fairly basic despite the flowered descriptions

OneNavyMerc · 22/10/2026 12:45

Bit of a weird combo and more a selection of "snacks" (hate the term) rather then an actual meal. Dressed up in fancy gastrospeak, but basically burgers and crisps.
As others have said, probably more aimed at the adults rather than children.
Pick and choose, unless this is going to be the only meal of the day.
My main concern, once you explained that it is a VIP lounge, rather then box experience, is that there will be other people diving into the food, too.
Nothing wrong with still or sparking water, far prefer these options to coke, fanta etc. used to give mine organic apple juice topped up with fizzy water as a special treat.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 22/10/2026 12:52

My autistic kids wouldn't touch the humus but the rest would be fine, so long as it hasn't touched the humus. My biggest problem would be stopping DS eating so much that he later vomits.

Anarchy99 · 21/10/2026 21:43

Everyone will tell you that their children would only eat things like that but honestly as an adult I would rather shit in my hands and clap than eat any of that

@Anarchy99

really?
what do you like to eat?

Oh yes I’m going to list what I eat just so I can be judged 🤣 Nice try.

Given that there are people on this thread who appear to be genuinely unaware that there is a massive list of foods between wanky and beige, it would only cause confusion.

Honestly, I’m just struggling to see why you describe anything that you don’t personally like to eat as ‘wanky’. WTF is ‘wanky’ about that menu? It’s just food. And bar the chimichurri, the black garlic crackers and the confit garlic, contains very little garlic or ‘spice’.

BugJuice · 22/10/2026 15:13

Anarchy99 · 22/10/2026 14:14

But that menu isn’t garlic/spice/etc everything, whatever that means! Some elements have garlic in, but that’s because a vast number of people like garlic! It’s a very, very popular ingredient.
And parmesan churros with tomato sauce? Chocolate mousse? Pavlova? Cookies and milk? Seaweed crackers? Pumpkin ribbons? Beef patty with bacon? Where is the ‘garlic and spice’? It sounds like you’re confusing ‘flavour’ with ‘spice’ to be honest. And also that you think that because you wouldn’t like something, then it shouldn’t be served 🤷🏻‍♀️

Cardomomle · 22/10/2026 09:08

What does your child eat from the standard kids menu?

Chicken nuggets. Which is usually on a typical kids menu so makes things easier when it's an option. He'll also eat pizza.

Of course, if it isn't then I just call the venue and they are almost always happy to accommodate a child with a limited diet due to additional needs/dietary needs etc in my experience. When we were in hospitality for a football game, they provided him with pizza even though it wasn't on the menu.

I didn’t say that. My quoted post just points out that people seem not to understand that there are plenty of options between bland and beige and the offering on this menu.

Tbf I wouldn’t pay that amount of money for food in any case. Nothing tastes good enough to rinse that kind of money!

Yes, and you said the menu was all ‘garlic and spice’, and I was pointing out that there are many things on it that are neither garlic nor spice.

saffy2 · 22/10/2026 18:08

My eldest would have eaten all of that from a v young age. My youngest two eat barely anything in variety, and often not even something they ate the previous day 😂
but I just wouldn’t have them eat there tbh. Lots of kids do eat that kind of
food, my eldest would have relished it 😂

AlwaysExtraHot · 22/10/2026 18:16

I think it's not as fancy as it's written too, and a lot of kids – if their parents didn't make a to-do about it – would just see it as cheesy nibbles, humous, burgers, pavlova, chocolate mousse and cookies.
But also, hospitality tickets are not aimed at children, so I don't know why you're surprised or outraged.

MammarOfOne · 22/10/2026 18:23

Sounds wonderful to me. Children’s menus are generally full of rubbish food that you shouldn’t be feeding your children.
My 3yo GD would love this and eat most of it.

Okay then - since you can’t let it go:

Garlic
Spice
Random Stuff that most people outside of MN don’t eat on a regular basis

There you go. Now you can come back with another comment about how everyone eats all this daily and that anyone who says they don’t is addicted to beige food only. 😬

But some posters claim it’s basically burgers and chips etc. I don’t agree but surely it is still unhealthy if that is the case?
