Aibu to not buy my hairdresser a baby gift?

Context. I’ve been going to the same hairdresser for about 10 years. I followed her when she left the salon and went self employed.
She mentioned when booking my next appointment that I’m literally her last appointment before her maternity leave. Would you buy her a gift?
We are not friends, it is a purely a professional relationship.
yabu - of course you should get a gift (suggestions welcome)
yanbu - it’s a professional relationship, no need for a gift.

Have you really not struck up a slightly more personal relationship in 10 years? Do you not talk at all during the appointments?

I would get her something if that was me, even if it’s just a £10 next or m&s voucher.

HeinousBeaker · 20/10/2026 19:56

I would, but I wouldn’t feel obliged to

If it was me I’d see it as an excuse to knit something. I love knitting anyway but baby clothes are my favourite things to knit.

She hasn’t asked for one. I would in your situation, but there is no golden rule.

No

Like she won't have loads of those.

I hated those cardigans when I had mine. So many ugly, itchy knitted cardigans. He never wore them.

If you do decide to buy a gift, please get something for mum and not baby. She will get lots of gifts for baby but most people never think about what mum would want or need too. Even a gift card for a takeaway would be amazing.

LoafofSellotape · 20/10/2026 20:53

Yes I would. I've been seeing my hairdresser for 18 years and I gave her a present when she got married.

OpheliaNightingale · 20/10/2026 21:14

I think a lovely luxury baby hairbrush would be so meaningful x

Cla7 · 20/10/2026 21:19

I don’t think there’s a right or wrong, I probably would get her a card and chocolates rather than a baby gift.

Personally I would just buy a little something. A baby grow isn’t expensive. 10 years is a long time, and whilst the relationship is professional I assume you still ‘like’ her enough to stick with her for 10 years.

i literally sold a sofa to a stranger
on marketplace (it was very very cheap for what it was) but even she gave me a baby gift! I was so shocked. Totally unexpected and unnecessary it was very sweet so I’m sure your hairdresser will think the same

Menonut · 20/10/2026 22:41

Thanks everyone. For the person asking what I think would happen, I don’t think anything will happen, it was just a thought that occurred to me earlier and wondered what others would do. I’ll probably get her a little something.

Don't buy a gift. There's no need.

Of course I would after 10 years. Wouldn’t occur to me. It to.

Aleveldilemma · 20/10/2026 23:35

I would always take a gift in this situation. It’s just a nice thing to do isn’t it? Doesn’t have to be anything big just a box of chocolates even.

I had a cleaner who went off to have a baby, I hadn’t really warmed to her and we’d had a few problems, but on her last day I left her some baby gifts in a bag as I was at work. She never even contacted me to say thank you but I’d still do it again in the same situation. And actually when I found out my hairdresser had had a baby I hadn’t seen her for a while but when she came back to work I got her a gift.
