Inconsiderate Cinema Latecomers

AIBU to think that people who arrive after the film has started shouldn't shine their bloody phones about all over the place distracting everyone during an often crucial part, and then faff about further checking messages before turning it off?

And before anyone says, "Well how are they supposed to find their seat?", my answer would be the way we always used to find it before everyone had a smart phone; by using the light from the screen, or by sitting at the end of a row if possible.*

If you absolutely have to use the torch, keep it to the bare minimum, shine it away from people, and don't keep flashing it around for ages.

For context, I'm talking about screenings of fairly serious films at an independent cinema, not a kids' film on a Saturday morning or a blockbuster at the Odeon on a Friday night.

*At the BFI: "If you arrive late, the duty manager may require you to take an alternative, easily accessible seat to avoid disrupting the rest of the audience."

Interested to know what other people think.

I went to the cinema on Saturday. My bladder was bursting mid-film despite going to the toilet before. I just had to go. I crept out so quietly and apologetically, and returned in the dark without using my phone screen. I felt really bad but I did my best to keep the disruption to an absolute minimum and think I succeeded. I hate selfish people.

That's no excuse. Cinema listings say when the programme starts and when the film starts.

I have never seen this in my 30+ years of going to the cinema. Which chains do this?

Then they slide in discreetly with minimal disturbance

Exactly.

Where I live, the arty cinema doesn't allow latecomers in. Being a more plebeian sort, I got to big screens mostly.

I love our local independent cinema that is a not-for-profit. I try to go at least once a week and take my DD2(10) to see the kids’ matinee every Saturday. We also go to as many live screenings as possible. The weirdest thing I have experienced is watching the live screening of the Royal Ballet’s The Nutcracker from the Opera house last Christmas with DD2. We were sat right at the end of the row and a couple of adults were sat right at the end of the other. Every time they got up (mainly to go to the bar), they would walk the full length of the row and ask us to move so they could get past, rather than step straight into the aisle from their own seats. And the same in reverse. Oh, and they brought a carrier bag of oranges to eat with them. So weird.

I haven't been to a chain for so long I honestly can't say for certain, but I used to go to the Odeon, Vue and Cineworld. Indies and smaller chains like the Curzon and Picturehouse do too.

How late are they coming on for it to be at a critical moment?

Well, if it's a serious film as opposed to a fluffy blockbuster...
