AIBU / mean to cancel holiday?!

Earlier in the year I booked though the sun £9.50 holiday promotion for October half term in the Netherlands. I paid at the time for the holiday and ferry crossing.
unfortunately since then we have had several massive unexpected costs.
whilst the accommodation and ferry is paid for I’m worried about the costs in getting there and other costs of being by on holiday.

if this wasn’t you would you cancel and spend the money on some local days out and cheaper things? Or go and just make the most of it?!

I feel mean to disappoint DC 😢

I’m concerned mainly about the cost of diesel. We live 3 hours from Dover and then have a three hour drive from Calais.

Cut back on other things. If you’re in self-catering don’t eat out. Kids will just be happy with a cheap oven cooked pizza or pesto pasta, packed sandwiches for lunch etc.. and spend time doing the cheapest activities, swimming pool, going for walks, bring board games and football.

Just being in a change of scenery is the holiday, it doesn’t need to be extremely expensive once you’re there.

My two were always excited by a picnic, even when it was cold! If self catering, you can do super cheap meals - pizza from the supermarket, fruit, pasta pesto, omelettes. Foreign crisps and snacks are always interesting. We used to like the big litre sized tetra packs of soup, which are good if you’ve been out for the day and it’s been cold. Do you need to drive much when you get there?

Thank you everyone. We are very lucky to live where we do as we live in a city and have bus passes for all of us which means that days out at home can be completely free for us here. We don’t need to use the car that much here apart from for work.

We have decided to go and only spend money on fuel and parking and food that we would have needed to buy anyway. And just have some days out exploring new places.
I’m going to look into the Tesco offer thank you!
thanks for all of your replies!

Hope you have a lovely holiday
If you do have space in the car taking some food as PP suggested would save money - cereal abroad is always v expensive if you buy the recognised brand for example but taking a couple of boxes of cheerios or whatever would save a bit.

Take stuff with you: tea, coffee, sugar, cereal, fruit that you might otherwise throw away. Packet of pasta, jar of pesto, some tins of beans. Buy milk, eggs, bread, ham, cheese, yogurts once you get there. Picnic lunch every day and cook when you are back at the accommodation - hopefully there will be an oven so that you can buy supermarket pizzas for pizza night, which can be cheap and fun. Maybe last night, you could have a meal out, as by then you’ll have worked out which restaurants might not be too expensive. Have a lovely time!

What holiday park is it? Not Duinrell is it? If do, there is plenty to do there if needs be.

Myfridgeiscool · 19/10/2026 21:58

This’ll be such a great adventure, good to hear you’ve decided to go.
Self cater while you’re there, it’s the food that really impacts the spending I find.

OneNewEagle · 19/10/2026 23:13

I would go, take food for home so dried pasta and the like. So you have the basics and once there it’s all paid for. Her only leaves the fuel. Use the fuel price checker to find the cheapest garage for fuel near you or en route and top up there.

Itsthewoluff · 19/10/2026 23:24

If it’s duinrell you’ll have a blast. So much to do and no extra expense (unless the pool isn’t included?)

Hi, just went to Versailles last weekend 650 mi round trip & did it on one tank of diesel, filled in UK. There are two Tesco supermarket petrol stations on M20, one in Ashford, the other just west of Dover. We packed lots of food & EU supermarkets generally cheap. Have fun!

It will be similar in cost so I would go.
Try to self cater with food.
Try to save for the deisel before hand by eating seconds fruit, canned beans, rice and tuna for a few days per week.

OP, I’d love to hear about De Schatberg - we looked at it last year but ended up at TerSpegelt. Hope you have a great time.
