At every level of capability it just feels like the species is in decline

The phrase, “I’m so confused,” has become annoyingly attached to any request for clarification. It makes the writer sound like a befuddled waif.

Busybeemumm · 19/10/2026 03:31

From an evolutionary pov, humans are the only animals who support the weak and infirm (and the stupid). No survival of the fittest here. So stupid breeds more stupid!

Busybeemumm · 19/10/2026 03:33

I opened up and actual paper map the other day, and just couldn't believe this is how I used to get around before! Smart phones and now ai has made us more stupid than ever.

Smokeywater · 19/10/2026 05:21

Wokeism has skewed things - there are many truths which are denied or lies which are promoted because it isn’t ‘kind’ - transgenderism for one

SparkleHorse82 · 19/10/2026 05:43

They’re not, the stupidity is just visible as people are posting it on social media rather than sharing it within their living rooms/the local boozer.

It's called empathy 🙄

Agree, like it's ok to use a calclator but you need to have a basic grasp of maths to have an idea of what answer that calculator may show you.

In the 1990s, I was interviewing for a trainee sales exec. I saw about twenty, all graduates.

I hired the only one who could give me 10% of a number without using a calculator.

I suspect things have got even worse!

Untrue ... you didn't look that up, did you?! Lots of animals actively care for the old, the sick and the injured. There are many instances of inter-species caring, too.

Don't trust your received wisdom 😏

Reform voters are the only ones with any common sense! This country needs a revolution to toss out the incompetent civil service, corrupt self serving judges and the grasping grifters we call our Government.
Universities have become indoctrination camps, finishing schools for the inept.

Okay ... Let's take your need for a revolution at face value. The next step in this thought process is to ask: Does Reform have the experience, the knowledge and the incorruptible morality to provide the alternative you seek?

You might be right, and also Reform might not be the solution.

I go with the Countdown rule, a single syllable word, eg daft, can form the comparative by adding er, dafter, but a word of more than one syllable, eg stupid, cannot just take er, it should be more stupid. I know others disagree but my ears prefer more stupid than stupider.

Same here!

I saw an archive video from the 1970s on Instagram where some little boys, probably age 8 or 9, were being asked why their football team lost. Their replies were so mature and eloquent compared to how kids would respond today, they were like little adults. They also had a crazy amount of self awareness ‘we lost discipline, we can play well individually but aren’t right as a team’

Extrapolating the comparative intelligence of a two different generations of children from a short video clip of 3 children is, in itself, a very stupid thing to do…. Ironic.

BeardySchnauzer · 19/10/2026 07:07

you can’t blame the capitalist machine and mum and dad working so having less time for their kids - it was ever thus

going back to my DD - during the election we had some interesting debates and she had some good knowledge that she had picked up off social media. I do think that generation (alpha?) may be better as they have been brought up being told to evaluate what they read.

i do worry that jobs in this country will disappear abroad to better educated populations - nearshoring to Portugal and Spain is popular.

Halfblindbunny · 19/10/2026 07:26

Was it? I was born in the early 80s. Almost every child in my primary school either had a mum who didn't work or one who worked very part time.

BeardySchnauzer · 19/10/2026 07:30

patents spend more time with their kids today then they did at any point in the past. Will see if I can dig out the stats on that

Rootsinmydreamland · 19/10/2026 09:38

MidnightMeltdown · 19/10/2026 02:21

Possibly, but it might also be the case that the poorly educated are now just louder, more entitled, and generally more visible. In the old days, the uneducated would’ve been occupied, sweeping chimneys, shining shoes, emptying chamber pots and selling matches. Now they’re sitting at home on benefits spouting nonsense on the internet.

Also, educational standards have fallen through the floor. Firstly in terms of discipline and behaviour, and secondly because of the idea that 50% of the population should go to university. You have to lower standards in order to pass them, because you can’t have 75% failing after paying £££ in fees.

Ah yes, the good old days when the proles knew their place and contentedly served their superiors without complaint. They knew better than to express any personal opinions or even speak, unless spoken too, by their betters.
This thread is, quite frankly, horrifying when the attitudes expressed in posts like this are considered.

Teenawilko · 19/10/2026 09:42

Biologically and evolutionary what you say makes a lot of sense, although I am not aware of anything empirical to back it up!
In the days before fertility technology and revolutionary medicine, the continuation of our species relied entirely on survival of the fittest. This meant physically and intellectually.
Today, we give life artificially and maintain life artificially - so we are less dependent on what evolution literally depended on until the 21st Century.

Moderators, are you happy to let horrifying eugenicist posts like this, and others on this thread, stand?
Just wanted to have some clarity on where the MN authorities stand on espousing the extermination of the genetically 'undesirable' in society. Given the tolerance the mods show for rampant ableism on here my hopes for your response are not high.

'spend time with'.

Spend time with doing life affirming / educational / quality of life things?

Or spend more time with in the same house whilst child/ren and parents are glued to their smart phones / ipads?

Really? Where have I written or even insinuating such.

Did you miss the 'evolutionary point of view'. It's a thread about why people are stupid!

Of course I support people who are disadvantaged getting help. Thank goodness for the NHS and all the help we give others who can't work due to disability etc.

Thanks for proving my point with your response!

Edited

Well I think that was the point.

dads in particular spend a lot more time with their kids than their fathers did. Mothers it hasn’t changed considerably.

It was in The Economist and compared time spent with kids/on hobbies/working and doing housework

i I recall men did more hobbies and kids but less work and housework!

Humans have provided care for the sick and disabled for many centuries, prior to modern medical developments. You seem to be labouring under the, frankly baffling, misapprehension that, before the 1970s or so, anyone who was not a specimen of physical human perfection would have not have survived, this was clearly not the case. There is nothing new, or unusual, about society supporting people of differing abilities and needs.
How long do you think humans would continue to exist if we didn't care for the weakest and most vulnerable in our society, tiny babies?
