To warn you not to travel to Prague by plane on a non-EU passport

Horrible chaos. 2+ hour passport control queues. First a very long queue for the new machine check - eyes, finger prints etc - and then second very long queue for a manual check - why???. V hot. Incredibly stressful and unpleasant experience. No forewarning by easyJet. Never want to do that again. Apparently it will be the same when we leave. Everybody has to do it - even if you have previously supplied your finger prints etc while travelling to a different EU country.

Yes, it was publicised all this spring summer that the new system was coming in and long delays were expected (and indeed were happening), I suppose you might have missed it if you weren't travelling over the summer holidays though.

If I understand correctly you should only have the long wait the first time in and out because they are getting you onto the system after that and it'll allegedly get quicker because it'll just let you through with a scan, although I'm still not sure that's faster than someone just stamping your passport.

Fortunately our only EU summer trip was through a tiny airport with not many non-EU travelers, so though it took longer than usual it wasn't a massive delay.

Sadly not. We went to Spain and then France and had to do the same thing both times. I don’t get why there isn’t a second queue if you’ve already done it. Or they lied about that!

tothesea · Yesterday 22:11

We spoke to the police they said there was nothing they could do..certainly no mention of an easy pass.

I’m not surprised or misinformed but obviously people are not going to be happy about it.

Moonmelodies · Yesterday 22:11

With this level of organisational incompetence you can see why so many so people are wary of the EU.

Wherearemymarbles · Yesterday 22:12

Brexit means we cant use e-gates.
queues because the EU completely fucked up EES and the system was never properly tested and is not properly integrated and systems dont work. 5 hours wait in Brussels a couple of weeks back apparently

Well I did say 'allegedly'. Sadly unsurprised it's not working as planned.

Brexit doesn’t explain why the system is crap. The EU should have been able to roll out a system that works, and I say that as an EU citizen.

I went to Singapore and Korea this year and got through passport control in seconds after filling in an e visa.

"The EU should have been able to roll out a system that works".

It works for EU citizens. Which is sort of the point.

Me and my daughter went to Prague last November and had to queue ages to get through and seemed very chaotic, it depends on how many planes are landing at the same time, however when we left four days later we had no problem and got through passport control very quickly.

No. It's just that non-EU citizens are not the priority.

dynamitehee · Yesterday 22:14

For balance we arrived in Malaga last weekend and had no bother. Everyone had to scan their passport on a machine when we arrived, no queue there. It only wanted prints and photo from one of us then on to the gates. Queue there was moving pretty quickly. We then had to go to a manned booth after the initial scan as we had an under 12 with us. Arrived, passport control and collected our bags and were in a taxi within 45 minutes. So it’s not across the board queuing madness.

I was hoping for it to be the case too.

Also you’re screwed if you have kids under 12 as you can’t use the gates.

I had this in Spain- despite having already done the finger prints in France , I had to re do the whole thing - I don't understand why

I do. It's to punish the British for voting for Brexit. We cut the EU budget by a third and they won't forgive. Stuff them, personally. But I flew into Greece and out again in the summer without any of this hassle. So they can do it.

Well maybe they will be when everyone starts going to Greece on holiday!

There is a great system that works. It’s called the European Union. The uk didn’t want to be in it any more sadly

Shirke · Yesterday 22:18

I don’t bother now. Went to Greece in the summer as they binned it off and it was simple.

City breaks, I can’t be arsed. Been to many and I find many of them similar anyway. I’m quite enjoying visiting places in the UK

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · Yesterday 22:18

It really depends where you go, the airport, how many flights there are to the UK. Rhodes airport was awful, and they had suspended the new system. Three hours we queued, it was utter chaos. Thankfully our flight was delayed.

"Everyone" does not mean "Brits".

I think Greece will be fine with EU tourism.

BePeachNewt · Yesterday 22:19

DistanceCall · Yesterday 22:13

No. It's just that non-EU citizens are not the priority.

But it’s not just non-EU citizens that are affected by airport chaos, is it? It also poses a severe threat to the economies of EU regions that rely heavily on non-EU tourism, like the Greek islands and parts of Spain. Which is precisely why those governments turned off the checks entirely for parts of the summer, in breach of EU regulations.

I voted Remain, but the EU’s clear organisational incompetence over the introduction of the EES system - damaging an industry vital to many of the EU’s poorer regions - really isn’t the anti-Brexit argument a lot of folks think it is.

No need for punishment. Britain shot itself in the foot.

What was that thing Michael Gove said? "The EU needs Britain more than we need them?" The island that cannot grow enough food to sustain its population. Right.

Eatingricecrispieswithafork · Yesterday 22:21

Blame Brexit, well those idiots who voted for it .... every region/county in Scotland voted remain yet got dragged out due to the knuckle daggers, i see not one benefit too it. The only joy that first year was listening to folk whining about it who had voted for it, always read the small print.

This is what caused confusion with us. On the way out we were told not to use the new system due to a child under 12. yet on the way back they even took our 11 year olds finger prints. Which i was confused about. As I read you had to be 12 for that.

Wherearemymarbles · Yesterday 22:22

Just to be clear easy pass is for Germany only

Beachtastic · Yesterday 22:23

I think other EU countries love making Brits queue. Brexit reinforced a general impression that Brits are racist snobs.

Labraradabrador · Yesterday 22:24

It really isn’t Brexit. I have always travelled on a non-uk/eu passport, and it is only the last year with new systems in place that it’s been a problem. Some journeys have been fine, but some have been utter chaos on arrival. The new system itself is buggy, but then in some airports there has been no adaptation to staffing rotas in peak times- a couple of times I have entered an absolutely heaving passport control with only 1-2 people doing manual checks.

luckily I have always gotten through the automated machines, but sometimes it is so packed that it is hard to find the right queue.
