Separate tables for children at airport pub?

Dh and I flew yesterday. We decided to have a pint at the airport Spoons but it was heaving and there were no seats available. Lots of people were walking around trying to find seats after ordering at the bar.

We came across a family where the adults were seated at one large table. 3 adults on a table for probably 6 to 8 people. Immediately behind them were 3 dc at 3 tables pushed together. Each table would ordinarily seat 2 people but each dc had their own little table and were engrossed in their screens so generally well behaved and quiet.

The selfishness was astounding. The adults could see how busy it was and could easily have accommodated the dc's at their table or at least made them budge up to free one more table but they sat there making ( in my opinion) quite aggressive prolonged eye contact at anyone who dared to look their way.

I know Ianbu but ffs. Is this how things are now? I have seen this sort of behaviour time and time again over recent months and have just had enough of most people these days. I am menopausal so my give a shitometer might be too heightened but I swear people are so much more selfish than they used to be years ago.

Ok. Well you have obviously decided how unreasonable we were. If you had been on the receiving end, you may have felt differently. Also for the record, this pub is always busy. I have been at different times of day and this is always how it is. I doubt very much that there would ever be enough space to sit like this without depriving others of a seat

You literally got a seat within a few minutes

grinandslothit · Yesterday 19:41

They were wrong for taking up so much space in a busy pub. But you chose not to say anything to them so not much you could do. I would have likely left and went somewhere else less crowded

Don’t be silly, you’ve said he looks hard and looks a certain stereotype… so you think he looks like a big hard man, ‘big hard men’ stereotype don’t have to be physically big. That’s a joke after the judgement you’ve made of the people you are describing.

No I never said that. I never said big at all. 89 percent of voting people are in favour so you surely must be one of the adults in question

I was referring to the stereotype you were describing about your own husband. And I actually agreed with you about them being selfish taking up 4 tables, which I did say… I just also said you were being judgemental about them based on something quite silly.

How unreasonable to expect parents keep their kids with them, instead of shoving them on screens to take up the entire place! Don't you know that's vital for their education? Well, as they're on holiday now, if you're talking about England and probably most UK schools, maybe they homeschool them so wanted a break? Otherwise, the kids would have to look over 16-which would mean you shouldn't assume they belong to the charmers- or under 5, in which case they should definitely have them close.
I'd just have sat down, if I'd wanted to.

I am basing this on his own experiences and what he describes himself as. He is almost 50 and has never had a physical altercation though people have certainly tried. He has great communication and diffusion skills hence the reason he has survived unscathed so far

Have you been on the receiving end of people staring you down? It is quite intimidating. Their body language was definitely confrontational. I have regular mva training as part of my job and if they were a patient I would be on my guard certainly.

did you think that children would attack you in an airport?

Are you serious? It was the adults. NOT the children. Read my op 🙄

I’d have asked them to move.

I’d have asked them to move.

I nearly always do this on trains. But these were genuinely intimidating people

Why didn’t you approach the staff??

In an airport Wetherspoons? There was probably only a couple of staff on and they would have been flat out serving customers.

I completely agree with you, it seems to be the way of the world now people are getting more and more selfish! And yes I'm also menopausal 🥺

If you're DH looks hard but isn't, why not assume they look aggressive but aren't?

This! Dh looks hard just voids anything you’ve said to be honest
