To think if you have enough money to travel frequently, the UK is the best place in the world to live

We have our humor, our countryside, the food here is great in the sense you can have all cuisines, and if you can travel abroad regularly for sunshine snd enjoying the rest of the world, you can't beat it

Ignoring the pros and cons of living in a place, I think it depends where you would want to travel to.

London is very well connected to the world with direct and connecting flights, and we speak English which is pretty much the default global language (for now). A British passport is pretty good for access as a tourist without visas, and other visas are generally low cost and easy to obtain.

Australasia is a long way away. Arguably the middle east is a better hub to be closer to Asia, but further from the variety of Europe and of course the US.

Perhaps a more central European country might make European travel easier (travel time, train options and Shengen rules).

I found Istanbul rates higher than Heathrow for connections: https://www.oag.com/megahubs-airports-2025

London works for us. I love the connectivity (but don't love the plane noise!)

I'd base myself in Thailand. Can get flights to UK and NZ in about 12 hours so pretty central. And easy hops all round asih

Mind you it's unlikely I'd visit UK mucj

Northern Ireland is in the UK, so you do indeed intend to live in the UK again 😂

I'd assume she means the northern island of Japan

Expat Brit here, living in Nelson Nz. Paradise here- amazing weather, vibrant small city, the most beautiful scenery on the doorstep, kiwi humour is great (Flight of the Conchords anyone?). Distance from everywhere else seems like a positive when Trump and Putin rattling their sabres. In a few years we’ll be retired and will come back to the uk for a couple of months during Nz winter for our culture fix. Life is good.

As someone who moved here from New Zealand - London is the best city in the world! Much better than NZ

See I love new Zealand. Well south island anyway. Hokitika is my favourite. Auckland not so much.

I loved Nelson. Abel Tasman National park and split apple rock. Every time I neck some NZ Sauvignon blanc I think of it.

Surely plane noise depends where you live in london

As much as I love visiting the UK, and showing DD around, I couldn't move back here (it's been 30 years).
We're in the Spanish Pyrenees, near Andorra.

Yes, that was what I meant.

I thought that writing island instead of Ireland and using a lower case n and i would make it clear, but obviously not to everybody.

Yeahh I used to live in St John’s Wood which is a very affluent area of London that has a lot of Americans. I hear there are a lot in Chelsea too.

Indeed - it’s easy to say the UK is best place ever if you live in South west London or Hampstead /st johns wood and have plenty of money for travel and a great home and maybe top up private health - their view may be very different if they lived in Stoke on Trent or Blackburn ( just examples) - no different to USA or most places -

I’ve lived in France and the US, and have also travelled widely. The UK wins every time for me: climate and seasons, countryside, humour, free speech, equality laws, traditions and quirks, animal loving, all of it.

I don’t like the growing racism and anti-semitism but in my experience these factors are far worse in the other places I’ve lived/visited - France was a nightmare for it.

It’s interesting on all my previous posts I’ve never mentioned France or US - both are places I like to visit for the odd holiday neither would I pick to live in for all kinds of reasons but mainly because culturally they don’t suit me -

Each to their own but the only real pull for me to the UK is children and grandchildren. I still have a house in UK but most of the time I'm in rural France. Notwithstanding the recent riots in the 3 major cities (and we've had that in the UK in years gone by) I like the space, the climate, the people, the food and most of all the way of life. Luckily my children and grandchildren trickle through each summer which is great and it's easy enough for me to get back to the UK. Financially I'm better off, pretty much everything works (and works well) the health system is excellent and whilst fresh food is slightly more expensive, the quality is so much better than UK. So, I reckon living in France and visiting UK (as well as many other countries) is a better option than living in UK and visiting other countries. It's not for everyone but it suits me.

I moved to Ireland ten years ago for family reasons. I’d been living in NYC and then London. I love living in Ireland. I live on an island near the beach. I swim in the sea every morning. It’s pretty much crime free. I still have my place in London and my DC is at college there now so I take regular ish trips … but no. I wouldn’t want to move back to the UK at all.

I’ve always thought France was the best country! Amazing beaches on the Mediterranean Sea, amazing skiing in the Alps covering a vast area! World Class city in Paris! Excellent high speed trains to many destinations and international air port in Charles De Gaulle. And the citizens are in the EU so can travel freely between it’s borders!
