Family Christmas and spending different amounts on children

We are hosting Christmas this year with family staying with us from Christmas Eve until 28th December. It’s my mum, siblings and their partners and children.

My sister sent me a message saying we all need to be on the same page about Christmas spending on our children so none of them feel left out. My brother responded with a thumbs up emoji but I asked what she means exactly. She said that as the kids would be opening gifts in front of each other, we need to discuss in advance a budget and number of gifts. 😬 I’ve said that we won’t be changing how much we spend or how many gifts we give to match them. She told me that thinks we spend too much on our children. I’ve said it’s none of her business and that maybe it would be better if she comes on Christmas Day afternoon after gifts are opened.

My children are 22, 16 and 14. Sister’s kids are 17 and 13. Brother’s kids are 17 and 14.

AIBU to not change what we buy for our children to suit others?

so your sister is the golden child / favourite? Does you mom always coddle her when he’s being unreasonable? Sounds like you may have had a good escape with them not coming for actual Xmas now 😂 I love treating my children and buy things all year round that they might like for Xmas and then there’s still the big present and the stockings even though they are older:) They love what I do for Xmas and I love watching them enjoying it and they aren’t spoilt brats they appreciate everything I do for them and buy for them etc so it doesn’t always follow that a lot of presents = spoilt children. They work hard all year and if I want to spend a lot of my money treating them then that’s my choice

An update for anyone interested.

My brother saw my sister today so they discussed it. My brother said she was being really judgemental about what we both spend on our children and even her oldest child told her to stop being rude.

Plans have now changed. They were all coming from 24th-28th. Now my sister, partner and kids are coming on 23rd, staying overnight and going home on Christmas Eve to stop the present issue. My mum is going to go home with her and spend Christmas Day with them.

My brother, his partner and their kids are going to come from 23rd-27th. It’s a bit sad that we won’t all spend Christmas together but we’ll all have a couple of days together before my sister and mum leave.

The plus side is that my dad is now going to be able to spend Christmas with us as our mum is not going to be there. He is coming on Christmas Eve after my mum and sister have left and is staying til 27th which we are all happy about.

My brother and I are booking a holiday for next year to get away from the family drama.

Sounds like it’s actually worked out for the best.

You and your brother get to have a relaxed Christmas with your kids without your sister dictating, and you get time with your Mim and your dad.

Don’t blame you for booking the holiday next year!

Try for a compromise. They are coming to your house so need to accept a bit that they fit in with you in having a present opening in the morning. Maybe you and your kids could have an additional present opening session on Christmas Eve morning, with a nice brunch and do some of the presents then?
