To think it’s time we treated the internet like any other utility?

I’m moving and have just been told again that I will have to wait 3 weeks for an engineer to come and install WiFi at my new house. This has happened every time I have moved since 2014.

I don’t understand it - water, electricity, gas are all just there when you move in and then you pick who you want to pay for it.

For some reason, in year of our lord 2026 we still can’t manage that with the internet even though it is essential to modern living.

Then you try and talk to someone on the phone and they bore you to tears with internet jargon and what I want to say is - I do not know or care what the internet is or how it works, as far as I am concerned it may as well be magic, just make it happen!

I work from home, we would like to watch some television when we first move in. AIBU to think this should have been sorted out now and that internet should not need “installing” and a three week wait?

Because you want connectivity

No that’s why I have to do the address swap. What I shouldn’t have to do is go through a whole performance when they could just change my address

The only option for fibre on my new street is gigaclear even though it is only a mile from my current house where we have sky.

Try something other than fibre.

That makes it even easier - set it up before you take possession.

You can’t start drilling holes in a house that isn’t yours yet

Happened to me last year when I moved. Had to wait a week. So bored! lol

Couldn't you have used your phone data?

The non fibre options are atrocious. We both work from home - I cannot be surviving on a 25mb download speed

Are they just changing your address or drilling holes in your new home?

They’re drilling holes but my point is that it is stupid and it should be better than that

I go online on my laptop. I was 'brought up' on compters/pcs so not used to accessing the internet on my phone. I didn't realise I had to turn my personnal wi-fi off to access other free wi-fi. My brother explained after the week was up...🙄😅

Not every home is connected to mains gas.

Should we be building connections to every home in the country in case someone wants a gas boiler on day one in their new home?

When we moved we agreed with the buyer that they would pay the internet for a couple of extra months and we would effectively take it over.

the problem is is that the installed infrastructure belongs to the internet company and they need it back unless the new owner/tenant continues to purchase the internet from them. If you use the same internet company then before the move call them up and arrange that it remains and the contract just changes name .

You can easily buy wifi that doesn't need full fibre broadband installation. Many people in rented flats have to do this. It costs about £20 a month and it will support tv, wfh, streaming, phones, anything. Get a short term deal to get you to your preferred broadband

Why should I have to though?

Whenever you think "wow, the market is not giving me the thing I want" you could complain that you shouldn't have to OR you could say "I'm going to become a millionaire by having spotted this gap in the market." If this is such a fixable problem, why not become a millionaire by fixing it?

Not had this problem it’s been a couple of days max

Your oven must operate independently of Wi-Fi

OonaStubbs · Yesterday 22:28

You can't get electricity, gas or water delivered to your mobile phone like you can the internet.

Meadowfinch · Yesterday 22:33

Why would your oven be connected to the internet? 😳

Given what's just happened in supermarkets in France, I am grateful nothing in my house is internet connected except the tv, and we have an aeriel socket as backup. I still have CDs if I want music.

If wifi fails here I just take my laptop to the library and borrow a desk. Otherwise life continues as normal.

I'm agoraphobic (I had lots of anti anxiety medication for the actual move.) so couldn't just pop out. I did get some free view channels with an indoor aerial but quite obscure ones, lol.

Council run internet would be rubbish and people would only use it as a last resort, it'd be another BBC where you'd have to pay for it even if you only used a private internet provider that was fast and reliable.
