To expect people ill with Covid stay home?

LakelandHiker · Yesterday 18:09

This week, my manager and a friend who goes to my exercise class are ill with Covid. I don't know if they've tested, but they've both said they have it. However one is still coming into the office and the other still attending the exercise class. AIBU or overreacting here... but why don't they stay home until clear? Even if 'feeling 95% better' wouldn't you wait until potentially exposing others? I can't help but feel mad at them both for being so selfish. I often look after an elderly relative and can't risk passing Covid on to her as she is frail. I get life can't be on pause forever but my manager can get paid sick leave and my friend can miss a class, it isn't like there's anything at stake...

Interesting to see so many people think a potentially fatal disease can be ignored.

Hospital admissions Increased Baseline

The overall weekly hospital admission rate for COVID-19 increased to 2.04 per 100,000 compared with 1.75 per 100,000 in the previous week

Sadly, I doubt there is any point bringing science!

SO many on here are convinced "it's just a cold".

ThatOldWomanNextDoor · Yesterday 19:29

Anyone with a heavy cold, or Covid should stay away from other people.
It's pure selfishness to go out mixing. Many work places advise staying at home.

Fine if you're young and fit but how do you know that someone you cough or sneeze on isn't suffering with cancer? Immunosuppressed? They have a right to go out and do whatever they need to - and vaccines are not 100% effective.

You might be able to carry on but the 90 year old you've just sneezed on could get it, develop pneumonia and be die.

Do the people that it's not "just a cold" for matter less?

Talk about a leap!

FunPartyIdeas · Yesterday 19:30

@PigletJohn So is flu.

alwaysbehindascreen · Yesterday 19:30

I go into different care homes every day for my job. If i am ill, that's potentially a lot of people I could infect a week- vulnerable people. I still test.

I need to be able to pay my rent and feed my children so it’s pretty simple really

Do you also need to go to an optional fitness class?

FunPartyIdeas · Yesterday 19:31

@alwaysbehindascreen Assuming you still get paid if off ill though?

Ian Duncan Smith was on the news yesterday moaning about how furlough has made ppl lazy and basically having a pop at people for following Covid rules,

Funny thing is though ive searched and searched but i cant find a petition from him demanding that people get their Covid fines reimbursed.
Almost as if the publics place is in the wrong.

Doesn’t surprise me. Iain Duncan Smith doesn’t have an empathetic bone in his body. As head of the DWP he waged war on disabled people, shredded social security, punished single mothers, evicted people whose carers sleep in the spare bedroom and wasted billions on Universal Credit.

No. Wouldn’t do that even in full health

MrsDoylesLastTeabag · Yesterday 19:31

HappyLizard23 · Yesterday 19:27

If they feel well enough why not? It’s just a cold for most people. I’ve certainly been to a gym with a cold before. Not sure id go if I was coughing a lot as that would be annoying for others but having an illness isn’t a reason to hide away.

And here we have it! Thanks, at least, for your honesty.

So it's not REALLY about not being able to afford to take time off? At least not for you? It's about your inalienable right to swing your fist around willy nilly, for shit and giggles, as it meets every nose in the vicinity. (Classical liberals turning in graves everywhere.)

You seem very touchy. You’re inferring a lot from my post that isn’t there.

People got on with their jobs and their lives with a bad head or chest cold before covid, and no-one cared. Unless they were so ill they couldn't function properly it was expected of them to just soldier on. No-one would have thought twice about staying at home to protect other clinically vulnerable people.

This is no different, really. The covid 19 strain is massively weakened now and anyone vulnerable should be vaccinated anyway. Have they actually got Covid? Or just saying they have it? I notice nobody can simply have a nasty cold any more. It's always covid now. The same people who used to claim that every minor virus they picked up was 'flu are now saying it's Covid. It's probably not, but if it is, so what?

When my DH was really ill with flu (I mean actual, bloody awful flu that had him in bed for 10 days rambling incoherently from fever and unwell for 3 solid weeks after that) the GP suggested he might like to do a covid test. We asked why and he said 'well you might just want to know if it's covid.' So we said 'And if it is covid, is your advice and treatment going to be any different?' And he said no. It was still just go home, take paracetamol, plenty of fluids, wait it out. He didn't tell us we should go into isolation or anything.

We did do a test, and it wasn't covid.

It is a cold its just one of millions of variants of it.

I take it you didn't do well in the sciences at school if you think.covid is a cold.

I'm with you OP. 'if' you can take time off work sick without penalty when ill, .then you should. There's no excuse for doing an exercise class when ill though. That's selfish as fuck.

For a lot of people it is just a cold
Yes for some it is far more serious but thats always been the case
Peoole cant live their lives like we did during the pandemic.

LethargeMarg · Yesterday 19:34

im suprised they tested as if i was well enough to go to an exercise class i wouldn’t think i had covid so wouldn’t be testing.
i had an awful cold (poss covid ) a few weeks ago. would never usually take time off for a cold but felt awful so rang in sick one day then wfh for two other days and was too wiped out to go to rhe gym all week.

We seem to have established that they don't care. Ableism and disability discrimination is so rife in society that it just becomes normal rhetoric.

WestwardHo1 · Yesterday 19:34

Is it only Covid where people are expected to Stay Home? Or even "stay the fuck home"?

With other illnesses there's a preposition used. "At" normally.

Unfortunately I still have to live like that because my health has been utterly destroyed from the pandemic. But never mind, people have to carry on going to exercise classes I guess.

Is there some reason you can't have your jab?

Do you still not understand how they work? They aren’t a miracle cure. They can lessen the defect. For someone with a compromised immune system, that could still be really fucking bad.

PeasOff · Yesterday 19:35

Yabu. Most people now don't even know if it's a cold or a viral infection ect unless they're testing whenever they're unwell.

Guidelines say to go to work if you're well enough to do so and workplaces will look at it as standard sickness now as well (unlike when people were being directed to isolate and exemptions were made in term of pay and sickness monitoring).

FunPartyIdeas · Yesterday 19:36

@aliasfrog Do you care if I can't pay my rent or feed my kids because I'm off work and not getting any pay?

Nope, it objectively, scientifically, ISN'T A COLD.

It’s caused by SARS‑CoV‑2, a coronavirus. It's a multi-system illness, not just a respiratory virus.

(Some other coronaviruses can cause ordinary colds, but they’re different viruses; colds are also commonly caused by rhinoviruses.)

But I realise most people are using "cold" to mean "not severe (for me)" rather than caring about virology.

Laurmolonlabe · Yesterday 19:36

If they haven't tested, which mostly they won't have done because the kits we got in lockdown no longer work and a new one costs £30- they have no way of knowing whether it is Covid. Also now everyone has been vaccinated it is no more of a risk than flu, so the approach to whether you go into work or not is the same as flu.

user293948849167 · Yesterday 19:36

It depends, I think I had Covid a couple of weeks ago and luckily I am able to work from home so just didn’t go in to the office - i didn’t feel well enough anyway really but managed to work at home.
I didn’t avoid anything else though, still went shopping etc.
If people are not able to work from home it should be treated like any other illness and if they’re well enough to work they go in.
I think Covid should just be treated as cold & flu now, if you’re well enough to leave the house just get on with it.
Older and vulnerable people are offered Covid and flu vaccines so they do have some protection.
