To expect people ill with Covid stay home?

LakelandHiker · Yesterday 18:09

This week, my manager and a friend who goes to my exercise class are ill with Covid. I don't know if they've tested, but they've both said they have it. However one is still coming into the office and the other still attending the exercise class. AIBU or overreacting here... but why don't they stay home until clear? Even if 'feeling 95% better' wouldn't you wait until potentially exposing others? I can't help but feel mad at them both for being so selfish. I often look after an elderly relative and can't risk passing Covid on to her as she is frail. I get life can't be on pause forever but my manager can get paid sick leave and my friend can miss a class, it isn't like there's anything at stake...

Common decency doesn’t pay my bills 🙁

Which is exactly why I said it’s not always possible if you don’t get sick pay or an option to work from home…

Don’t get sick pay babe, that’s already been mentioned. Have you heard of reading?

Ever heard of common sense, sweetie pie?

If you would travel and then work while having uncontrollable diarrhoea at just a few seconds' notice, about ten times a day, I feel very sorry for anyone near you.

It's understandable with self-employed people, I just didn't realise how many MNers were self-employed as so many people on here are saying they have to go to work.

Im not self employed, i work for a large company but i don’t get sick pay when im sick. Are you really not aware that sick pay isn’t a legal requirement? SSP is barely anything and doesn’t cover my expenses

its not 2020 or 2021 anymore

people won’t stay at home unless they feel unwell - and aren’t expected to either

FunPartyIdeas · Yesterday 20:05

@Iwantanothergo Immodium will stop that 😀

Having uncontrollable diarrhoea is not the same as having a cold or covid 🤣🤣 but thanks for the laugh

We don't get paid for the 1st 3 days, that's a whole week's wages gone.

It's not just self employed people!

There are so many employment contracts which do not pay sick pay, or pay statutory only which is extremely minimal.

There are also many workplaces where your sick record is tracked and a certain number of absences can result in disciplinary procedures including ultimately the termination / non extention of your contract.

The fact that so many posters are completely ignorant of this only speaks to your / their immense privilege in this regard.

Covid is not a variant of the cold. It is a different virus.

Staying home when contagious, regardless of the virus causing it, is just common decency. Obviously, it’s not always possible if you don’t get paid sick leave or an option to work from home but nobody needs to spread their germs at an exercise class.

Honestly you might as well bang your head on a brick wall. Nobody gives a shit unless it affects them. The people insisting that they don’t care about anyone else’s health because they have to work etc, would find a way to care if they or a member of their family became gravely ill or died from Covid. Until then they will continue to think that even the bare minimum of wearing a mask is too much trouble. Or makes them feel silly. Or ruins their make up.

Iwantanothergo · Yesterday 20:07

OhMyGodSusan · Yesterday 19:57

God sake it's just a bad cold. People need to get over this covid nonsense, could be worse could be in Russia and it be the plague!

"Just a bad cold"…

Sure, that’s why during the epidemic the hospitals were full of people with Covid, on ventilators. That doesn’t happen to people with just a bad cold.

BeanNaGealai · Yesterday 20:07

FunPartyIdeas · Yesterday 20:02

@BeanNaGealai Do you get sick pay? 😀

Yes I do. Why?

I have stated that it is not possible for people to stay home from work if they don’t get sick pay. Or if you’re referring to me asking who is out and about with the flu, out and about is not the same as working

I don't live in the UK - hence my original question Confused

Here we get paid sick pay, at our normal pay rate, for up to10 days a year, it can be carried over to 20 days.

FunPartyIdeas · Yesterday 20:09

Some of us have no choice but to work. I was miscarrying and still went in daily.

Uncontrollable diarrhoea is one of the symptoms of the new variant. Ho ho ho.

Or reminds them of having a hand over their mouth while being raped

Let’s hope it’s just a troll. It would be too sad to think that people can really be that stupid.

Negroany · Yesterday 20:11

I actually think I had it last week. But I didn't test, and I didn't know at the time.

It's only this week, looking back, that I realise how rough I felt and how having every joint ache for no reason isn't normal (I just kept thinking "tough gym session" or "it's from those shoes I don't wear very often", "slept funny" etc). But I wasn't outwardly ill, and while I felt rough all week, I was only actually sick on Saturday and had a fever.

It never occurred to me to stay in.

No it won’t. I speak from experience.

BagBitch · Yesterday 20:14

I agree with OP those who go out amongst others knowing that they have Covid are extremely selfish. People haven’t stopped being vulnerable.

Maybe people should read posts more carefully before responding. My original question was Don't people in the UK get sick pay? - I would have thought people were intelligent enough to work out that I DON'T LIVE IN THE UK.

Nothing to do with "immense privilege", some of us just happen to live in countries where people do get paid, to an extent, if they are off work with an illness.

TheFlandersPigeon · Yesterday 20:15

I think most people consider their own lives to be more important than those of others, or at least when it comes to something serious like serious financial or health problems.

If I were immunocompromised, I'd prefer other people to stay off work and lose their jobs than me get ill for several months, even if it meant them getting into debt, losing their home etc. If I were in a position where I'd lose my job and struggle to pay bills if I didn't go into work, I'd prefer to go in because the roof over my head is more important to me than an immunocompromised person.
