AIBU… Genuine mistake

What is the done thing when this situation happens? it was a genuine mistake. Picture of seats attached so you can see our thinking.

We have not been the pictures in over 5 years. Took the kids yesterday. Booked what we thought were back seats, they look like back seats on the pictures.

Film starts. Lady, Man and their child approach us. She says “You’re sat in our seats move.” My husband said “I don’t think we are, opens his phone to find the tickets.” I said what’s the seat number, I check both ends of the isle and they only say numbers not letters. So I came back and said I don’t know what to do. My husband said I’ll go and ask one second. The woman is getting more annoyed by this point. I said he’ll only be a minute. She said you need to move now, I said I can’t move both kids, all our food on my own it’ll only take a minute we genuinely think these are our seats. She starts pointing in my child’s face, whose three, saying move him, he’s in my son’s seat and he’s autistic. It’s my child’s first time at the pictures, it’s dark and there is a strange woman pointing at him telling him to move. He gets upset. Not that this is relevant but I felt like saying so, son is autistic too! Anyway husband returns and says yes we are in the wrong seats. We both apologised while moving the kids and our things.

I understand I was wrong, it was a genuine mistake though, look at the picture would you think these are back seats? Or if you go the pictures a lot is it obvious and we’ve just been really silly. 😂 I genuinely thought we were in the right seats and did everything we could to resolve it quickly.

AIBU would you have moved two young children under 4 if you thought you were right?

I get it was a mistake so you apologised and moved ao what on earth os the issue then? Why do you assume you shouldn't have had to move because you have children?

What are you talking about? Of course I should move if I’m in the wrong seat!

But why would I come on MN and lie? That’s bonkers!

People come on mumsnet and lie all day every day! Same as cropping the screen out of your photo, you want people to agree with you which is fair enough. You might not have lied but plenty of people do chance it by looking cheap seats and sitting in expensive ones when they look like they will be empty.

Don't worry. It was a mistake and she should should not have been so unmannerly when pointing it out.

We regularly go to the pictures-a large council owned one. Usually, there are about 20 of us in the whole place which contains over 100 seats on the ground floor alone.

We don't even check the tickets-just sit where we normally sit.

Last Sunday night, there were 15 people in.

A couple came to us and said we were sitting in their seats.

They were right-we were but they weren't special seats and there were nearly 100 other seats for them to choose from. Anyway, we got up, gave them their seats and sat in the row behind them.

They were in the right but it was laughable.

Sit in your seats.

It doesn't matter how busy or empty it is. Just sit where you've booked

I didn’t I’d just pay for better seats. I can’t understand why people think this.

Because this is MN and there’s always one 🤣

PingPong91 · 11/10/2026 11:47

The number of people on this thread acting like it's inconceivable to them that a person could ever make a mistake is absolutely cracking me up 😂 I guarantee every single of us here had made a daft error at some point and I also guarantee you'd have wanted a lot more grace and understanding than you're giving OP.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/10/2026 11:47

She may have been right but that doesn’t excuse her being a Horrible rude bitch.
She had a field of potatoes I don’t know about a chip on her shoulder the minute she walked in. All she had to say is excuse me I think you’re in our seats.

zingally · 11/10/2026 11:48

It was a genuine mistake on your part, not worth beating yourself up over.

Not sure why you thought row A was the back though...

Well she did say that to start with, although slightly less politely. And they refused to
move, messed around checking the rows, then went to ask someone all while refusing to move until staff had confirmed it. She was rude but she was likely stressed and concerned that people wouldn’t get out of her seats when she new she was right.

Megifer · 11/10/2026 11:50

So you were sat in the correlating seats on the back row with the wheelchair icon? Weren't there 2 gaps where the wheelchairs would go?

Perfectly clear to me that OP meant not moving them until they’d checked, given the amount of stuff to be moved.

Bliejogs · 11/10/2026 11:51

Ah OP next time you want back row seats for front row prices just do what my teen daughter does, check the booking app before you go to sit down and sit in the ones that are still showing as available when the film starts.

Bit the op was in the wrong and the whole thing was dragged out by the op it wasn't anyone elses fault

I cropped it out because I screened shot it last night. Because I was thinking about it, it was after midnight and I was embarrassed about the time.

It was a genuine mistake. I can’t do anything about making a mistake I want to know if I was being unreasonable for my reaction.

No I couldn’t move a scared three year old, a four year old, four drinks and four popcorns by myself as I didn’t have enough arms.

The issue for the other family was the way you responded to them. Instead of considering you might be in the wrong seats both you and your husband refused to consider you could have gotten it wrong and didn’t make any effort to move. If your perception was she was rude I am sure her perception of you was the same and that you were chancers.

at 3 and 4 your kids can lift their drinks and a bucket of popcorn. It might not have been elegant but it would have been possible. Given you and your husband only have 4 hands, the kids carried drinks or popcorn in.

For the other family there was no need for your husband to disappear, as rows are marked in cinemas. There was no reason for you not to attempt to move your party and all their stuff. There was no reason to obstinately insist you were right beyond all doubt. It’s quite baffling that you are still at it the next day.

No, I didn’t invent anything, it’s a scenario that happens regularly, and I said that may not have been OPs case. Calm down and take a walk yourself rather than throwing insults at strangers over a cinema ticket thread. Ridiculous

Not sure I’ve sworn at anyone on this thread, or called you any names…

EmeraldShamrock000 · 11/10/2026 11:59

I would have asked you to move too if I had booked the back seats and you booked front seats. It hurts the neck up front.

No she didn’t, She said you’re in our seats move. May be my stands and expectations on basic manners are too high but that’s not my idea of being polite

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 11/10/2026 11:59

Row A is always the front row so it’s not an easy mistake to make and therefore Yabu.

She missed the word please but OP wouldn’t have moved anyway at that point

Theboymolefoxandhorse · 11/10/2026 12:02

@LetsGoOutside you made a genuine mistake. And it sounds like it took less than 5-10 mins to sort. The other person was out of order to point in your child’s face and shout at him.
From your original picture I can see how you got mixed up but then from the many others that have been uploaded it shows clearly a screen. If it is an odeon you went to have you cropped this out of your original post so it looks less obvious? Either way - she’s behaved badly and a bad example to child - autistic or not

WhichBiscuitsAreMine · 11/10/2026 12:03

The done thing is to move seats when you're in the wrong seats.

It's very clear from the booking image that those seats are at the front. There will have been row letters somewhere, probably on the floor. Cinemas are very easy to navigate.

I don't agree with the person being rude to you but I can imagine it was very frustrating for her to watch you dither about

pocketfullofdynamite · 11/10/2026 12:03

Im studying the picture. It’s supposed to be the view from above so you’re looking at the chair seats with the foot rests extended. But if you look again, it could possibly be the view looking from the front so you’re looking at the chair backs (if that makes sense?) in which case the back rows do become the front rows.
The screen does give it away though!
