No outside food allowed at hotel

I’m away for a couple of nights at a hotel, they have a restaurant so I thought I’d just eat here.

I get here and it’s closed for refurbishment for three nights! I went out and got fish and chips to eat in my room but they told me that outside food isn’t allowed in the hotel, because of the restaurant…

Which isn’t open! I’ve asked if they’re serious and they said yes, they made me eat outside the hotel on a bench by the beach.

AIBU or is this utterly fucking nuts?

I left to eat because I couldn’t be doing with the fuss about it and to be fair tomorrow I will be trying to find a pub for a roast, but still!

What fuss? You walk past them and say “no thanks”. They aren’t going to hunt you down and forcibly remove you for eating fish and chips in your room.

Did you ask them what the alternative was? Would love to have heard them try and rationalise their argument. Surely they can't expect everyone to go out and eat each evening?

I would be very cross at both the nonsensical enforcement of 'rules' and the fact I hadn't been informed prior to arrival that the restaurant would be closed.

Would they confiscate it ? The fish and chips !
You have paid for the room. What you do in it, providing legal, is surely your business.
If they want people to eat in a restaurant, they have to have one to eat in.

Sounds like inexperienced jobs worth staff.
