Paddy McGuinness and silly comments about clinical depression

I caught some of an interview with Paddy McGuinness where he was talking about clinical depression. He said it was like being at a James Blunt concert you couldn't get out of (I'm paraphrasing). I think it's a stupid analogy (he said it was all he could think of) and is minimising clinical depression, even though he says he has it himself. He also said it is "depression on steroids".

I get that comedians try to find humour in heavy topics, but comparing a debilitating condition to being stuck at a James Blunt concert completely misses what clinical depression actually is. It just feels dismissive. Attacking me personally doesn't make the joke any less insensitive.

He's not a doctor, hes not there to give you medical advice or talk about how to deal with it. He can describe his condition any way he wants. And no one is "attacking" you. Honestly, you sound like one of those people that spend far too much time online getting performatively offended by everything.

I don't think it does minimise it though. It may not cover all of clinical depression, but I feel like it describes that feeling of having something you desperately want to escape from but can't really well.

He was trying to be witty, and failed.

Lots of people give James Blunt stick, he seems to revel in it, it has become a bit of a passtime on Twitter over the years, he searches for people saying rude things about himself and replies, and he's often very funny. Just one of many dozens of examples is his reply to someone tweeting that Blunt has an "annoying face and a highly irritating voice," he quipped "Yes, and no mortgage."

Blunt even made a video to market one of his songs, which had him interviewing young people who had no idea who he was and had never listened to his music, very self disparaging.

Blunt replied to McGuinness by posting the clip on Twitter with the caption "Suddenly clinical depression sounds quite fun," and included a link to tickets for his Back to Bedlam 20th Anniversary tour.

McGuinness was probably aware of the trope when he made the lame joke. But regardless, I couldn't bring myself to worry about how someone else describes their own mental health issues, it's up to him.

That has made me really admire James Blunt, despite his music.

You need to be an intelligent, clever and talented comedian, to find the humor (pathos) in difficult topics, otherwise it’s just clumsy

McGuniess fails on all 3 counts.

See I always find she gets the words wrong when we duet 🤔

Like Amy, I don't think she sings the same words every time

But whether something/someone is funny or not is completely down to personal opinion, as your post proves.

He's done ok out of his chosen career so far.

Hanging of Peter Kays coat tails. He’s like the Angel of Death on any show he touches.

Rumour is that he’s got the BBC over a barrel around his Top Gear Contract… are they are just waiting it out.

Again, your opinion.

As much as I'm not overstruck on him ether, his humour has made him a lot of money and fans.

Horses for courses etc.

I've always thought of him as a desperately unfunny twat.

Funnywonder · 09/10/2026 13:06

It’s a joke. Not particularly funny. But a joke all the same. Paddy McGuinness thinks he’s funnier than he is. James Blunt, on the other hand, is a genuinely funny guy and he’s not the one making a living out of it!

EscCtrl · 09/10/2026 13:27

Paddy McGuinness tried to make a joke. It wasn't funny.
A case of, "No likey, no lighty". 😀
