Would you go to a party where you knew no one

I really want to go to a party near Xmas, but it involves travel and an overnight stay. I'll be on my own. None of my friends want to go due to the COL crisis near Xmas or the genre of music is not their cup of tea. Which is understandable.
We've been to this place a few months ago and we spoke to a few people. They're not going to remember me after six months and might think who is this weirdo with no friends who's attached herself to us.
How do you start dancing and letting your hair down on your own without feeling awkward and self conscious?
I've seen photos online of previous nights there, all full of happy friendship groups enjoying themselves. A perfect example of feeling lonely as hell in a crowded room.
I recently had quite a potentially serious health scare, which I am now recovered from. This has taught me that at the age of 61 life is too short to sit frustratedly at home, when you really want to be out enjoying yourself.

No

EBearhug · 08/10/2026 08:14

I do. I live alone. I don't get many invitations to parties, or opportunities to buy tickets for events (I mean, I could buy them every day, but I'd bankrupt myself.) So if I am invited or if it's something I really want to do, I go. I might meet people there and make new friends. I might enjoy the music or whatever it is. It might turn out not to be that great, and i don't stay long after all. But more than anything else, I will probably be really annoyed with myself and regret it if I don't go.

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · 08/10/2026 08:26

No. But I hate parties/dancing/people.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 08/10/2026 08:30

Is it a party or a gig? Sounds more like a gig. I’d go but not expect to get involved with anyone else there as they will be in groups or couples. I would find doing other things much nicer and would prefer to be with friends and drop the gig.

Millerner · 08/10/2026 08:31

Have a (one!) drink beforehand to take the edge off your nerves and the evening as a challenge to your networking / socialisation skills and a way to practice small talk. You’ll probably never see anyone there clever again, so it doesn’t matter if it all goes horribly wrong, and you can always leave early.

Well, if the OP is in fact that poster I think she is, as in the threads linked by @JoleneJoleneJoleneJoleneJolene, the appeal of the distant northern soul nights is a man she’s been flirting with, who’s married with children, and whom she’s afraid will think she’s a stalker if she shows up again by herself.

It’s obviously possible she’s not the same poster, but the situation, and the terms in which the OP describes it (“Am I going to look like a weirdo with no friends?’) are very similar.

Ah ok, didn’t read those links!

Shesafancyflapjack · 08/10/2026 08:48

I don’t want to discourage you as you absolutely should feel free to attend anything on your own, but a party is different to a concert where you are part of the crowd. I went to a daytime rave a few years ago and found it full of couples and groups, felt so self conscious and left feeling flat and lonely, people didn’t talk to me and without a friend to talk and dance with it was no fun. Thats just my experience, what I’m trying to say is that a party where you have no one to shout ‘I love this one’ and run onto the dance floor is not as much fun as you hope.

stealthninjamum · 08/10/2026 08:54

im assuming it’s an organised event rather than party. I would go by myself, and would love some time on my own. In terms of the actual event I’d either dance on my own or I’d find friendly people to chat to. There are always a few approachable people who you can hang out with at an event and as people are in a happy frame of mind most people don’t mind making small talk with a stranger.

Thank you all for your answers. It's an aftermoon/early evening trance music party, not a private party. My dh is going to come even though it's not his thing.
To the pp who accused me of disappearing I have a job and was unable to answer until now.

How do you come to be invited to a party where know know no one at all? Surely the host at least?

I actually went to a party last weekend where I knew no-one except DP. I was worried, thought he'd have a better time without having to entertain me, but it was great. He introduced me to some people and then we each did our own thing. I met some nice people and danced with a variety of partners.

I think it's easier to do stuff on your own as a post menopausal woman. People expect you to be a bit eccentric 😆

Nobody accused you of disappearing, we just wanted to know if you were the same poster who was cheating on their partner in previous threads

NattyPeachBalonz · 08/10/2026 11:49

@Ninetwenty It's one of those ticketed afternoon trance music parties.
If it was a private party where you only knew the host it would still be the same awkwardness of being on your own, as they would have to circulate and look after all their guests.

It sounds like you have a lovely DH who will go with you even though that’s not his thing. Personally I would go alone, why not! I like my own company and would enjoy a drink, a dance and a bit of me time doing something I like.

NattyPeachBalonz · 08/10/2026 12:03

@JoleneJoleneJoleneJoleneJolene my mistake. I was referring to the ignoring of pp comments, which I was not doing.

My idea of hell. My dm on the other hand would love it and would have lots of new friends by the end of the night. it all just depends whether you are the type of person who can strike up a conversation with a stranger or get up on the dance floor and have a dance without caring if there is someone alongside.

You should be more like your mother.

Talloss · 08/10/2026 12:38

I have done in the past but I'm less likely to do it now. I'm just less sociable in my old age and going out is more hassle (as I have young dcs at home). For ticketed events I feel a bit less self conscious, because lots of people might go on their own. If I was going with my DH I wouldn't think of that as being on my own though.

Workingfortheholidays · 08/10/2026 12:41

Fellow trance dance music fan here! I go to a lot of events and it’s usually the friendliest crowd, I also have DJd at a few smaller events and there’s a mixture of people who come along solo aswell as in groups. I’d definitely do it. You’ll make friends and if not it’s joy like it’s singalong band music where you might feel a bit more awkward. Life’s for living go and enjoy yourself

Topjoe19 · 08/10/2026 12:56

I also wondered as soon as I read it if it was the poster who is interested in the married man. Sounds so similar.

NattyPeachBalonz · 08/10/2026 05:45

@JustMerelyHere no there isn't anything closer in the genre of music

Is there a social media page for the event? Could you "introduce " yourself on there say you enjoyed it before and thinking of coming to the next event? Someone might recognise you and start a conversation and you can take it from there.

CelestialCandyfloss · 08/10/2026 13:19

Definitely go! What's the worst that could happen? See if there is a meet up group so you could pal up with others going there, or a Facebook group for fellow fans you could post? Take all the right precautions, but don't let being on your own stop you!

This is me too.
It's notmy thing, but if it was I would. I live alone and do most things alone. If I stay over somewhere I take a couple of mini bottles of wine and snacks and in the event I don't enjoy being out, I've got a nice evening in a hotel as a backup.

Washingupdone · 09/10/2026 10:25

There is a complete difference if DH is sitting in the corner, you are not by yourself and wouldn’t feel at all vulnerable, you would always feel the connection, than if you were by yourself, no-one else.
