Poor man. He had dementia, he was in a wheelchair and was no threat. How could these officers they have treated the resident like that. Makes my blood boil. 🤬

Id be fuming if it was my loved one. Don't they have parents?

I'm really glad that they were found guilty and dismissed from the police. It was disgusting what they did to that poor man.

I also think that the care home have some explaining to do as to why the police were called in the first place. As pp up thread stated, why didn't they call a member of the family first to help deal with this.
If I had a family member in that care home I would be removing them due to this.

A tragic case. I think the sacking of these two officers was the correct outcome. I don’t understand the staff at the home calling the police? Were the staff not trained to deal with Dementia patients? I realise it must be a very difficult job to care for such patients but the police really?
Apparently the man had family. Surely the care home staff could have called a family member to speak to the old boy in the first instance. What possible threat was he to anyone? He would have probably nodded off in his wheelchair in his room eventually. It’s not like a double amputee was going to run after anyone with a butter knife.

Call his family? He has dementia. He likely doesn’t even recognize his family. A care home can’t call family to be exposed to someone with a knife.

There has been at least one more case of police tasering an elderly lady with dementia.

I think police need proper training on how to deal with such cases. People with dementia are not rational and police need to be able to get a knife off someone without risking being stabbed or cut themselves.

The reactions to on this thread are notably different to those where there were at least four police in attendance and who stabbed a young and small boy ( 10 or 11 if I remember right) carrying what looked like a small dinner table knife or plastic knife who was backing away from the police, clearly terrified of them, and who tasered him. Shocking case but police got huge support from many MNetters.

Sorry, don’t know why that says stabbed a young boy! Police obviously did not stab the boy but were all searching for him and when they found him, all followed after him, crowding him, as he backed away from them.

Whoever it was in the care home that thought it was appropriate to ring the police has some questions to answer too.

Exactly. Why in earth escalate this to a police matter? Beggers belief ( worked in Care, some EMI experience)

I’m also baffled that the care home called the police in the first place tbh.

Care staff will be afraid of legal conseqences of using force to disarm him themselves.
By definition, dementia sufferers cannot be reasoned with, they are often very paranoid and genuinely fearful that staff are going to harm them.

NoisyBrickDog · 07/10/2026 09:27

The staff shouldn't be afraid if they can justify their actions to disarm him.

I'm not saying that all the staff dive on him - but surly one could have come in with a pillow or blanket and place it over his arm/hand and then take the knife from him.

I can’t fathom how they were not found guilty of assault.

And being bashed with a baton, sprayed with harsh chemicals and tasered didn’t contribute to his death? Really? OK he may have died from a.n.other cause but how can a violent attack like that not have contributed in some way?

Neither of them should have been allowed in the Police Force in the first place place.

Nasty cruel people.

Of course it contributed to his death. My 90yo relative woke up to find a burglar in his bedroom and he miraculously fought him off. But within weeks, his previously completely healthy body started to shut down and he died a few months later. The doctors treating him said it was standard for an elderly person who's suffered a major shock. People in their eighties and older often don't survive serious falls or extremely stressful sudden events. For a 92 year old man to die within weeks of such a terrifying and extreme assault, it's pretty obvious that the stress was a contributing factor.

Disgusting that they aren’t in prison.

Hard agree.

Why did it take 4 years to sack these stupid arseholes? Just a very sad joke of a system there.

I agree. A family member of mine is a serving police officer and it appalls me, frankly. He is a cruel, angry man.

Those 2 are a disgrace and the female officer making jokes about it on facebook is just twisted.

Wonder if she'd like her mum treated like that,?

Close the care home down. It wouldn't have happened if they hadn't called the police.

If go mental literally if any of my loved ones were treated like that.

Just close it down. Serve them right.

I just can't get past it
He was no threat at all.
